Excessive Membership Fee for Cub Scouts?

My son, wife and 6-year-old grandson live with us. He wants to join Cub Scouts, he'd be a Tiger Cub. The local pack wants us to pay $50 for membership. BSA membership is about $15. When my sons were Cubs all we paid was the BSA membership fee. I asked what the extra money was for and they said patches, pins, belt loops, etc. and that they only had one fundraiser a year; the BSA popcorn sale. Tiger Cubs don't earn patches or belong to a den using the handbooks, that comes with Wolf Cub the following year. When we did Tiger Cubs the parents took turns holding meetings that were experiences, like going to the firestation etc.

We did contact two other packs to ask about joining, if they had room for him and didn't get a reply. We've been trying to enroll him since September, finally got a reply from this pack and they said he could join in January.

We all think $50 is excessive for this age group, plus we're 4 months into their year as well (no prorating). We didn't sign him up yet and wonder, how much did those of you pay for your sons to join Cub Scouts? Do you think $50 is fair?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your replies! We just wanted to know if that was a normal fee for 2013, as it wasn't when our boys were in Scouting.

I am pretty aware of how scouts function, well, was aware, things do change and differ from pack to pack. Our family did BSA for 15 years, from Tiger Cubs to Eagle Scout. I was a den leader, webelos den leader, awards chairman, pack committee chair, and a scoutmaster for 7 years when my sons reached that age. We're kind of aware of how much things cost and what leaders donate. We (all four of us, parents and grandparents) will come with my grandson to support the pack. Our scouts sold popcorn, scout fair tickets, had raffles at pack meetings, sold hot cocoa at the holiday parade, cake raffle at the Blue and Gold Banquet ,etc, and when older had rummage sales and car washes. Ends got met. We were just taken aback by the wait and fee. If it's reasonable and customary, we'll go ahead and register him.

Oh, about sports, don't your kids get uniforms with their sign-up? They do here. Insurance, team pictures, and uniforms do add up.

Normal for his area... But the fees are often paid for by one of several churches... Which I find hugely touching and sweet as:

- Gymnastics = $100 per month
- Piano = $150 per month
- Baseball = $75 for 3 months (+ about $200 in uniform costs)
- Soccer = ditto baseball
- YMCA = $100 per month + $160 per 3 month class
($1500 -$2000 for afterschool care)

MEANING $50-$100 per year is the least expensive thing out there (around here), but even that makes it too expensive for many families... So several local churches have a flat out "Your kid wants to Scout, we'll make that happen".

Sorry, but I think this is cheap. We just signed our 6 year old up for the city soccer league and that was almost $150 and all they get is to play soccer on city fields, be coached by volunteers. We were told is it because of the insurance (not sure what that is since we have our own medical insurance - I guess for liability for the coaches or maybe the parks?)...The people I know in tiger cubs are happy and like it - we didn't do it because it was too much of a time committment here (a meeting every week, plus a weekend activitiy and an extra meeting once per month)

Very fair. You have no idea how much supplies, badges, and such cost. Leaders already donate their time and are helping your grandson.
You surely don't explect them to pay for it too.

We pay $80 per scout per year and only have popcorn as our yearly fundraiser. The fee covers the same...pins, belt loops, etc. Our Tigers in our Pack do use the book and earn beads and belt loops. They do a monthly outing to different places to work towards their Tiger badge, a monthly den meeting, and a monthly Pack meeting.

I am sorry that your local Packs are not welcoming! We would love to have your grandson, but we are a bit too far away. Scouting is great for the boys with good parent leadership, so I would continue to look for a good Pack.

Good luck!

My son never did scouting, but my girls did. The annual dues was $45 with $12 going to the council. The difference went for supplies - pins, badges, meeting supplies (pencil, paper, craft stuff, etc.). We had to buy uniforms in addition to this.

I run a scouting program at our church and we charge $25.00. It barely covers our costs - books, sashes, badges, pins, certificates.

$50 year may seem excessive, but it's cheaper than most sports. I'm currently paying:
•$100 month for piano
•$130 month for volleyball
•$90 month for waterpolo

And, yes, most sports fees include uniforms. But scouting never did.

And, we had a hard time finding troops as well. The problem is that there are so many kids and not enough leaders.
