Help - We are going to an engagement party that states - evening summer attire - no jackets required. I need to figure out what to wear and how my husband, 14 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter have to wear. Also is a gift required? There was no registry info in with the invite.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Here is what the wedding planner responded with:
Dress casually but not jeans/t-shirts/flip flops. They are looking more for resort wear, sun dresses for the ladies and khakis/buttoned shirts for the guys (no jackets). Thanks for your help.

You - sun dress, nice top with capris, strappy sandels
Hubby - polo shirt or short sleeve button down, kahkis/knee length shorts/jeans (no stains or holes)
Son - solid tee or polo, knee length shorts or kahkis
Daughter - sundress and leggings, nice t-shrit and knee length skirt

A nice card or small gift would be appropriate.

I would say an elegant spaghetti strap dress for you with some strappy heals. Same type of dress for your DD. Boys can wear short sleeve button downs with some linen flat front pants with dressier sandals.

OK...Here is what I would do.
1. Classy elegant is good for any occassion....
2. For you -- Nice summer dress and shoes or black pants and smart top.
3. for your hubby -- nice khakis and polo or nice oxford shirt...nice shoes.
4. kids -- nice summer dress and sandals/khakis and nice shirt

These are some of the things I would expect to see some of the female guests wearing - not a fan of the men's attire I think that is beach specific. I do like the white/silver dress best - and the fun dresses at the top for your daughter. For the guys, your son could get away with dockers and a nice polo shirt and your hubs with dockers or dress pants and a dress shirt no tie - think breatheable fabrics.

Here are some more options - accessories/dress up are key, but these could be worn over and over again:

Evening attire generally means cocktail dresses for women, suit and tie for men. Given that the invitation specifies no jackets for men, I'd assume button-down shirt and tie for men, and cocktail dresses for women (and to choose a dress that will stand up to humidity, since perhaps this event will be outdoors?).

Invitations should never have gift information included - to do so would be tacky - but you should bring a gift (that is within your budget). Ask the person hosting the party where the couple is registered (or check Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel etc. - those are always safe bets for wedding registries).

Evening summer attire, basically just means evening attire, but bare shoulders, open-toed shoes and men without jackets are expected/accepted. Think of what you would wear to a cocktail party, then remove the outer layer. Dress shoes are still the right footware choice, so make sure your clothes are dressy enough to go with shiny shoes :)

Hubby and boys: White dress shirt, tie, dress pants, dress shoes (the boys might be able to get away with khaki's, but they will be under dressed... hubby should definitely wear real slacks).

You: Cocktail dress (floral or bright print would be pretty), bare legs, pumps or dress sandals. A more structured, non casual sundress could also do the trick.

For you, a nice summer dress (I'm thinking kind of like church clothes) or cocktail dress. Sundress or nice summer dress for your daughter. For your husband, dress pants and probably a button down short sleeve shirts of some type (not hawaiian print) or polo.

Gifts are optional, but I'd take a little something special to use in their wedding prep or decorative in a new home. Something like a wish bowl or wish books (available at the nicer Hallmark stores), candle holders, wine glasses, or unique decorative item.

You could wear a flower print dress (there are some really cute "maxi" dresses out there that are halter style. No nylons, but you could wear open toe shoes. Your daughter could wear the same. Son and husband wear "smart casual" or business casual type clothes. Dockers with a short sleeve dress shirt.

church clothes, simply dressed-up a little for you. It's that easy! Think party dress. :)

& always keep comfort in mind.

well evening summer attire to us means shorts and tops and not dressed up. if your close enough to the family to be invited to the engagement party you should be able to call and say what does this mean. as far as a gift something small. like a photo frame for the wedding photo or a bottle of wine and some glasses. but nothing big
