Hello mamas!

I was wondering of any of you have had experience with taking a LO to the ENT for tonsilitis?? My 2.5 yr old gets it about every 1 to 2 months. He has it now and at his doc appt she suggested making an appt with the ENT docs. So, now we are waiting to hear when out appt will be, but Im nervous because I dont know what to expect. Anyone have a LO that had their tonsils out? I had mine out when I was 8, but my little guy is 2.5...it scares me to think about him going through that much pain. Please help me put my mind at ease (at least maybe a little). Any advice or stories of experience are so appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I would get a second opinion, based on a friend's experience with her 3yo. One ENT said her daughter's tonsils were the size of a 10yo and that the tonsils needed removed. The second ENT said her tonsils weren't large at all and that removing them wouldn't stop the snoring issues that her daughter had. They ended up removing her adenoids, her snoring stopped and her ear infections have stopped.

Good luck!

It is scary when a loved one has to have potential surgery. I would be nervous too if my son had to have his tonsils out. I had to deal with a broken arm and a compound fracture last May. I was out of mind with worry but everything turned out fine. He will feel so much better once they are out and he is healed. Kids are resiliant and they bounce back fast. Tell him he will get lots of icecream and popsicles. Do not let him know you are scared or anxious or he will be too. I wish you both the best of luck.

My son had tubes put in, by an ENT, at 1 1/2 and had his tonsils and adenoids removed from the ENT at 5 y/o.
The only regret I have is not having them removed sooner!
The only real pain my son ever had was when he didn't keep up on his fluids enough to keep his tonsils moist. He let them get dry and it got painful.
Advice: be diligent with meds (even through the night)
be insistent with the water intake!!
Take your child's favorite blanket and stuffed animal so they will have it as soon as they come out of anesthesia.
Take child to the store and let them help pick out soft foods for after procedure. My son begged for toast, which really worried me. I finally gave in and he said it felt good on his tonsils. I barely toasted the bread so it wasn't very scratchy.
Your little one will be fine :) I promise, it will be harder on you that it will be on your babe!! Good Luck! PM me if you have any ?'s
Oh and be sure you like/trust your ENT - that will be huge for you! I LOVE ours and trust him completely.

Hello,

My daughter just had her tonsils and adenoids out. She had reoccuring strep about every few weeks for the last 5 months. It was the best decision we made. She is sleeping better and not as tired either. My daughter is 7 and it was an outpatient went in in the morning she was sent home that after noon. The only thing she didn't talk for a few days but didn't complain of any pain and kept up on giving her tylenol for a few days every 4 hours to keep ahead of it. Good Luck!!

My daughter had her tonsils and aednoids out at 2-1/2. She wasn't sickly, but had HUGE tonsils and had sleep apnea as a result, which was very scary. The key is having a great pediatric ENT. Ours was WONDERFUL. I have no idea where Girard is, but if you're anywhere in central PA, I would recommend him. Our daughter had her surgery at Hershey Medical Center. Our ENT had privileges at a hospital closer to our house, but wanted it done there b/c they have pediatric anesthesiologists. I would recommend a ped anesthesiologist as well if you have a choice...even if you have to drive further.

Normally it's an out-patient surgery, but our Dr. had her admitted since she was so young. I stayed overnight with her and didn't get much sleep, but at least I knew that if there were any complications, we were in the right place.
Her sleep apnea was gone the very first day. We were very glad we had it done. If your son needs to have it done, there's really no reason to wait. If he's sick now and the surgery would help him to feel better...I say go for it!

Day 1 post-op was very easy...days 2 & 3 were worse. The nurses had told us to expect that ahead of time and I was glad to know so I could prepare for it.

It really wasn't too bad...just prepare to camp out on the sofa with your LO for a few days.

I have an almost 2 year old that had his adenoids out last year & tubes put in (he had just turned one) and the ENT dr said he will need his tonsils out this year too. I see you're from Girard...we had a FANTASTIC ENT dr...Dr Ruthann Lipman at ENT associates in Erie. she is absolutely wonderful.

if he does have it done, just be prepared for him to be a little "crazy" coming out of the anesthesia. They are kinda wild and flailing and you really can't do anything to comfort them. The day he had the procedures done, once he got home he slept all day but the next day was rough. Plus the drainage was pretty yucky and i think its worse with the tonsils.

Good luck and just remember that the discomfort he'll have for a few days will be so much better than having the recurring problems he's having now :)

My son was 2.5 when he had his tonsils out and it was great decision for us getting sick so often after he had them out he didn't get sick for a year not even a little cold. Because he was under 3 when they did the surgery he stayed over night at the hospital which was a relief for me, I stayed to of course. He was great ate lots of pop sickles. They gave us liquid Vicodin and we used it once and decided to use Tylenol which was more then enough for him. The first 2 days went great, days 3-5 were a little sore but all in all was the best decision for him.

my son had tubes and his adnoids removed, left in his tonsils ... his recovery was great! I am told, again not personal experience that the younger the better and quicker but that they are also not removeing them as often as they used to. Do not be nervous simply go with it and learn what you can.
