My friend had it done, and she loves it. In fact my periods aren't that horrible...I wish I could have one done and would do it electively if I could :) She says she uses 2-3 tampons now .... per period!!
have any of you ladies had an ablation? how was it? did it help with heavy periods? was it painful? were there any side affects? were you happy with your decision to do it? any other advice?
thanks!
thank you for all your responses I did have my ablation done in May, it didn't really work for me, the recovery was very easy but I till have a full 14 day period, my 2-3 heavy days are not heavy now so that is an improvement but otherwise I would say the difference is minimal, but I knew that was a possibility going it.

I have not but have a friend who did and she says it is the best thing that she had ever experienced. No hurting, feeling great and swears by it. I have tried telling my daughter-in-law she should talk to her dr. about it instead of a hysterectomy. Not sure I have convinced her but worth a try to talk toher dr. about it. Good luck.
I had one in Feb. 2010. I'm glad I did it. I was having issues, that I hadn't gotten checked. I was in 'temp' mode at work prior to a layoff, and was getting ready to lose my insurance. I chose the EA over a hysterectamy because of the difference in recoup time. I'm glad I did it. I have a life again.
Yes you 'slough' of stuff. Mine lasted about 2 weeks. There is an unpleasant smell, but that goes away when the 'sloughing' is done. It took me a while to be comfortable being intamite again because of it. I get BAD cramping, which is new and a common side effect. I still have periods, but they last 2 - 3 days, and I might use up 2 pads a day, versus going through overnight pads and tampons every 20 minutes for 2 days, and then still having a cycle for 6 more days.
My friend had it as an option, but chose not to do it because she read that once it is done, it makes detecting for ovarian cancer more difficult. Don't know how true that is. She found it online somewhere. She has a family history of ovarian cancer, so that fact alone was her deciding factor. She went ahead with a hysterectomy, because she too was losing her insurance.
Good luck

I had mine a couple of years ago. I don't bleed anymore and it is a great thing for me!! I heard that the way a person's uterus is formed has a lot to do with the success of the surgery. I know a lady who still has a really heavy period after the process. No pain for me and no recovery time taken off work.
DO IT- DO IT DO IT. LOL I had it done in March of 2008 and haven't had a period since. It was the best decision I made. I struggled for years with very heavy periods and pain. Very little pain or discomfort involved with the procedure. I was back on my feet the next day. My only regret was not doing it sooner.
Good Luck to you
Blessings

I considered an ablation, but my physician after doing an ultrasound on me, recommended a hysterectomy & I am sooooo glad that I had one. I was done, I still have my ovaries, I had a robotic & was back at work in 3 days. It was wonderful. I've heard with the ablation that you slough off dead tissue for a while & some women still have periods, although they might be lighter. A friend of mine had one which wasn't successful & then had to have a hysterectomy.
So glad I had it done... I had HEAVY periods and had already had a tubal.
I had it over a year ago - the Novasure procedure - in and out of the dr.s office in less than 2 hours - I was in pain the first day - but had pain meds - then just cramping - and yes the "bleeding" - sloughing burned tissue... lasts for a couple weeks and has a rusty metallic odor (my bleeding actually lasted longer so my dr. gave me some medication to stop it) - I have been period free ever since!!
I think it is a great idea as long as you don't have any fibroids or anything that distorts the shape of the uterus. My doc recommended it to me following a C-section with complications. I had a large hematoma which was displacing my uterus. That posed a concern that I expressed to my doc. He was doing a couple other procedures at the same time. I questioned the order of the procedures. Usually he does the ablation first to ensure getting to do it in case another procedure punctured the uterus. Luckily he took my concerns to heart and re-examined me prior to surgery. He scoped me first and discovered my hematoma was coming from my C-section incision which had come open. That was not what the CT scan showed. Had he performed the ablation first, it would have burned through the hole and destroyed the nerve control center of my bladder leaving me incontinent.
It is a serious procedure. If all conditions are right for it, I think it is a great one. If they are not, complications can arise.
