Hi Mamas, I just found out I am anaemic due to extremely heavy periods and my doctor suggested I think about having an ablasion. I fully intend to research this procedure online but would love to have some input from those of you who have 'been there, done that'.

Specific things I would like to know... any regrets from having the procedure, any complications, pre-surgery prep, post surgery requirements, recovery time etc etc. Also, approx how much does this procedure cost? - I have a $10k deductible so this is going to be an out of pocket expense. Is there any risk of getting pregnant after getting this done? Do you still get mood swings each month? The procedure would probably be performed at Botsford or Royal Oak Beaumont - any good/bad/ugly stories regarding wither location?

Anything else you care to share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance ladies.

p.s. - I am 44 and my husband and i are not planning anymore children.

What can I do next?

I've never had one, but my doctor is recommending it for me. Thank you for all the information! According to my doctor, you can get pregnant, but he says you shouldn't, so some form of birth control is a must.

Thanks!

My husband's secretary did this and said that she wonders why she didn't do it sooner! She had heavy periods and then had lighter ones for a while and then no more, She didn't have any hormone issues with it because it doesn't effect the ovaries. I don't know the details and can't really ask her comfortably, but I know she said she was extremely happy to not pass out from blood loss and craming every month. She is around 50, had periods that slowed down a lot, then for almost a year, they returned with a vengence. They did it in the doctor's office, I think, and she was back to work in a few days.

I had this done almost 3 years ago. I honestly can't tell you how wonderful it has been. I had been anemic for years. Even iron supplements couldn't touch my deficiency. I had sooo many accidents. I could not leave my house the first 3 days of each cycle. I never wore white or went near water! I am now free! Yes, I still have mood swings, but no bleeding or cramps. I stayed completely of f my feet for 3 days after the procedure. A friend who had it done got back to normal too soon and bleeds still. So she advised me to really rest. I have no clue as to the cost because insurance covered it because I was anemic. I also had it done at my gyns office in an operating room. I was put under. Wish I had known about this ten years earlier. Yes you can still get pregnant. It is not the same as hysterectomy. Must use birth control. Good luck! You will love it!

I had this done and I do love the fact that I do not bleed anymore. You will still cycle however. Occasionally, I can feel, few cramps. I did go to a hormone doctor after I had this done and I wish I had gone before. He told me that my heavy periods were cased by low progesterone. I have had a hormone imbalance for quite a while and doctors never could figure that out. After I had the blood screen done for all the different hormones it came back that I had almost no progesterone in my body and that would have explained the heavy bleeding. I went on bio-identical hormones for progesterone and I do not have PMS symptoms. I have read that each uterus is formed a little different and this has a lot to do with the effectiveness of the surgery. I have friends that have had this done and still have heavy periods. The doctor that performed my surgery told me that it is good for ten years and I had it done when I was 41 and the age that most women go through menopause is 51 so this worked for me. The procedure itself was only 90 seconds. I was only at the surgical center for a few hours. After you have this done you should not be able to get pregnant. It is basically a newer and less invasive form of a hysterectomy. I do not have any problems from the surgery. I took a nap after the surgery and then got back to normal life. The anesthesiologist bill alone for my surgery was $3500 and I think the total bill was around $5500 but I can't tell you for sure since the insurance paid for it.

Hi D.,
I had a D & C, my tubes tied and an ablation on December 22, so it's been J. over 4 weeks. My doctor would not perform the ablation without the tubal, as you can still get pregnant, but it is extremely dangerous for both mother and baby. I finally stopped having discharge yesterday which has been the worst of the procedure for M.. (I HATE wearing a pad!) The day of the procedure, the pain was quite intense but they gave M. good drugs that made it tolerable. Other than that, it really wasn't too bad. Obviously, I don't know yet how it will affect my periods, but I'm trying to be optimistic and hoping for the best.
As far as the cost, I J. got my bill a couple of days ago and the total cost for all three procedures was $7014 before insurance.
Hope this helps and good luck in your decision.

I can't give you any first hand knowledge (sorry! I'm not done having little ones!) But my mom and my mother in law have both had the procedure and they both thought it was amazing. They both had very little recovery time and they have MUCH lighter, or nonexistent periods. But they do definitely have the same mood swings, but they are both post menopausal, so that could have something to do with it. Hope that helps a little! : )

I have very heavy bleeding too and have to wear both tampon and pad and then change them about every 2 1/2 hours. Im already anemic because of a genetic trait and so when I bleed like this it always worries me. I thought its just normal though. Do u think it isn't? I have a dr appt in about 3 weeks so I think I'll bring it up now. Anyways, I've gone to Royal Oak Beaumont for cosmetic laser surgery. The hospital is really nice inside, the people that check u in are really nice, and the hospital is more high tech than the ones in my city. The anethesiologist and nurses were great too. I had this procedure done there twice and would use the hospital again. Parking is close too.

What if there was a way to help with the heavy flow without the operation and without spending $10,000?

I'll be honest I don't know what you are going through as it never happened to me. I am 53 and very close to being in Menopause. I never had the heavy periods. I should have as female problems run in my family.

So I chose to do some things that have helped me so much.

If you're interested in finding out what I do to have my body go through the regular phases of womanhood, let me know.

If you choose the surgery, go with Beaumont.
