I have been sick for the last two weeks with first a cold, but now bronchitis. I finished a Z-Pak on Tuesday and went back to the doctor today because I still feel like a stack of bricks are on my chest. When I got home from the doctor I went to the restroom and noticed that my bowel movement was a black color. I have never seen this before, and was wondering if anyone knows what could cause it. Is it serious, or could it just be from my medicine?

What can I do next?

Are you taking a probiotic? I was on antibotics for over a month this summer and my doc really wanted me to load up on probiotic and yogart since taking a lot of antibotics can cause some pretty nasty side effects.

Good Luck!!

black stool can be a serious problem. Check the side effects of your meds but call your doctor immediately.

You should always call the doctor when you have a black stool. It could be serious, find out for sure tomorrow, do not wait.

if it is really black and not dark green it is a sign of upper GI tract bleeding and you need to talk to call your doctor right away. Another sign of upper GI tract bleeding is a coffee grounds texture to your bm. If you had a ton of spinach you can have very dark green BMs, too. There is a vitamin... it is escaping me right now... you take it when pregnant ... wierd that it's not coming to me... but that also makes your stools dark dark green. Gosh what is it. You take a lot of it while preg. OH, iron.

If it's black, though, you need to see a doctor.

EDIT: IF your antibiotic or other meds are causing this, your doc needs to know right away. Please don't wait to make an apt. If you can call him/ her tonight, that's even better.

Hi! Most likely it's nothing to worry about and is just from medication. Sometimes that can happen when you are taking iron pills. Believe me, your question is just fine. I posted a really embarrassing question the other day regarding my digestive tract! So, no worries. I hope you feel better soon. By the way, a quick call to your local pharmacist could also help verify whether any meds you're taking cause darkening of the stool.

Feel better!

Zithromax reeks havoc on my lower digestive system as well. Of course it also REALLY works. I would call the doctor and ask about that but would be more concerned that your bronchitis has not improved. Maybe you also need an inhaler or a nebulizer? Feel better soon!

Black stools are usually a sign of blood (old blood) You should definitely inform your MD.

As far as your chest, have they done a chest x-ray? Do you have mitral valve prolapse? If so, maybe that needs to be checked with an Echocardiogram. At the very least you should have a chest x-ray to verify bronchitis or pneumonia.

it could very easily be from your medicine. many medicine have a tendency to do that. it could also be if you have eaten something with food coloring lately.

My first thought was a side effect of the meds, but the others are right, it could be blood. I would call your pharmacist first and find out. If you need to then call your doctor.
