Can anyone that has boughten one in the last 5 years tell me what kind they got and what they like or don't like about it??

I don't want a down comforter, my issue is that I don't want to get into a cold bed, i'm fine once the bed is warmed up, but it's those first 5 mins when my whole body is shaking from cold that I want to avoid. and hubs doesn't want to raise the heat.

So I think I would like an electric blanket with a timer that turns off after 10 mins, and something with a long enough cord to reach around behind my head board.

I do have some safetly concerns as well, but don't need to hear storied from back in the day, just with in the last 5 yrs please.

and thank you to anyone that can help!

What can I do next?

We have a heated mattress pad.
I turn it on 10-20 min before bedtime then turn it off when I get into bed.
It's lovely getting into a warm bed!

I have a little heating pad that I turn on before my shower. It provides enough heat for me.

I have a Sunbeam dual zoned plush electric blanket in King size on my Queen sized bed. I LOVE it. It has a "preheat" function, and about 20 levels that you can adjust each side to (so your husband can have his side off, but you can still have yours on). The cords go right under the bed and each side has their own controls. I bought it at Walmart about 3 years ago for $80 or so. Definitely an excellent purchase.

Last year, I got a king-size electric blanket for Christmas and hubby and I both love it! I don't know the brand, but it probably came from Target or JCpenny's and cost between $80-$100. It has dual controls so we can heat our sides of the bed to our personal comfort level (hubby prefers his hot, I prefer just barely warm). It is really nice to get into a pre-warmed bed during the winter. The cords plug into the foot of the blanket and run up the lenght of the bed (under the bed) and have a leader cord so the temperature controls can sit on the nightstands. Once turned on (controls from 1-10, I'm usually set around 3), the heat runs for 8 (or 10?) hours--so basically all night. But, you could just turn it on about 30min before bed and turn it off (or to the lowest setting) once you're in bed.

We really love ours, because our room is at the back of the house (north west corner) and stays colder than ALL other rooms! I had some hesitation because of the old-school blankets and their horror stories, but we just love it!

I have one of those neck & back heating pads you warm up in the microwave. On cold nights I zap it for a couple of minutes & then run it between my sheets (for really cold nights, I'll leave it in the bed down by my feet). Toasty! A modern-day bedwarmer.

We used to have a heating blanket years ago. It was more trouble than it was worth honestly.
When it gets cold I always put flannel sheets on the bed. This really helps a lot at preventing that super cold when you first get into bed. Making sure the bed is made, or at least the comforter pulled up helps a lot as well so the sheets aren't exposed to the cold air.
I am allergic to down so we just have a heavier comforter that we use during the winter and a lighter one we use during warmer months. We will add a blanket between the 2 if need be. Obviously it doesn't get as cold here as it does in OH, but at night we can get into the 20s or high teens which is cold enough for us.

I have both an electric blanket and an electric mattress pad. Both Sunbeam brand. I turn them on about 10 minutes before bed. They make the sheets and mattress toasty. Both have an automatic shutoff switch for 8 hours later. I usually turn the blanket back on during the wee hours because I get chilly again fast.
I have never had any problems with either.
