Educational Videos for 2 Yrs Old

My daughter (and I) LOVE the Bubble Guppies show! Can get DVDs, or put on InnoTab or just DVR it on NickJR. They teach animals, colors, seasons, there's lots of signing...and it won't drive mom crazy!

My son is 2.5 and he wouldn't sit through any video or TV show for more than 5 minutes...

Sesame Street is NOT as good as it used to be...and I miss Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Daniel Tiger, while cutely drawn, is yet ANOTHER animated show.

My son liked Wild Kratts (PBS Kids) for the first minute while it shows footage of REAL people with REAL animals, but then they, too, turn animated and he started pushing buttons on the remote saying "I want the elephants! Where elephants go??"

Children are recommended to have no more than 1 hour of SCREEN time - meaning anything with a screen - TV, Computer, iPad, etc...

Children learn much more from playing with adults and other children...look into that.

Sesame Street is still as good as it ever was.
From 1970-72 it was my preschool, I learned it all in a half an hour a day, numbers, letters, colors, sounds, shapes, how to share, take turns and be a good friend. My kids enjoyed it in the 90's/early 2000's and learned as much as I ever did!

Hmmm.. I would not really be going for "educational" for a 2 year old. Really. Educational is what happens when you take a walk together outside and you talk to her about the plants and animals and seasons and seeds and flowers and that smell (someone's barbque grill ?)....
Videos are what you use for entertainment (when you HAVE to get a shower or be on the phone for 15 minutes, or they are sick and you want them lying down resting while YOU are up getting things done). For videos, we loved SchoolHouse Rock. But for calmer quieter times, you can't get much better than The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. :)

No videos are educational. Please don't delude yourself.

There are some videos that are BETTER than others. But NONE are good for your child except for entertainment value..... please understand that..

Now, I'm all for videos. I, myself, hate Barney with a passion... but from a psychological perspective, it's one of the best out there. Teaches great values... good songs.... kids love that big purple dinosaur.

Sesame Street. Electric Company.... SchoolHouse Rock. The Wiggles.

Yo Gabba Gabba - I don't watch... but I hear it's like crack for kids.

I was a fan of the backyardigans.

I second the recommendation for the Leapfrog series. My daughter (also 2.5 years old) learned all her letter sounds from "The Letter Factory."

She also loves Curious George, Cat in the Hat, Elmo, and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. She likes Dora, Kai-lan, and Word World, as well, though not as much.

(I'll spare you the lecture about TV time. It seems like you've gotten quite enough of them. Sheesh.)

There are a lot out there. You do realize that 2 year olds shouldn't get a lot of TV time, right?

Our favorite for this age was some of the Mr Rogers Neighborhood dvds. My son loved the Adventures in Friendship dvd most; the Day at the Circus one really put him off because there was a clown in it (clowns are very typically scary for youngsters.)

Consider purchasing these directly from the Fred Rogers company as they do good work in promoting healthy families and good information for parents.

Also, the Montessori-based "Preschool Power" series captivated my son. It's simply preschool kids doing everyday things-- folding towels, putting on their coats doing the 'flip' method, pouring water, discussing gradation of color-- all very fascinating to the younger child. And because a kid is doing it, I think the content/tasks (many of which are necessary self-care ones for growing children) seems more do-able.

(ps-- I come from a more 'early childhood ed' bent and think that playing and experiencing the world is the best way to learn, which is why we chose just a couple of live-action options and let him watch them over and over. So, besides this, I'd suggest keeping it simple: live music performances with age-appropriate content (not wild) were the other thing we'd let him watch at this age. )

My daughter was obsessed with Barney! I hated Barney until she loved it so much. Became endearing. She learned tons of songs, her colors, etc. before she was 18 months.

Preschool Prep Company's Meet the .... Series (Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Colors, and Phonics). They are definately not entertaining for adults but they are perfect for kids. The Leap Frog videos are great too.

All the "annoying" kids shows are great for little ones (Barney, Sesame Street, Dora, etc).

The leap frog series starting with Letter Factory, WOrd Factory, etc. are great.

My DD likes older videos - like Elmocize and Weebles and whatever else my mom showed up with. You can also find Sesame Street on YouTube and we like shows like Team Umizoomie and Imagination Movers.
