Eczema Treatment

Has anyone found anything that works well for eczema? My daughter has battled it and now I've discovered some patches of it on my little 4 month old's legs. My daughter's pediatrician prescribed acid mantle cream for her. It's ok as long as we are very faithful about putting in on her.

I'd be curious to see what has worked for other moms. Thanks so much for your help! :)

My son is 10 and has excema since about 2. The best way to help them is to keep them lubed up. We use Cetaphil lotion which is good. We have also used Aquaphor and Eucerin. The key is consitency. Which is sometimes hard.

Eucerin cream; I was told this by a pediatrician last winter when my 3 yr old had it really bad on her face (her name is also Olivia). I put it on my kids hands and even mine during the winter months to combat dry skin/cracking.

I am a hairstylist. I have only seen one company that makes a shampoo specifically for eczema and psorasis. The company is called EC Mode, and they make a shampoo and conditioner for eczema that works well and actually smells good too. Try calling your local salons or getting online to find it, then maybe you can use it as shampoo and body wash for your kids. Hope that helps.

Aquaphor lotion was a godsend to my son.. he had it so bad this summer for some reason and i would have to say that a few days of aquaphor was wonderful and started to clear up in a short amount of time.. you can get it at walmart , walgreens where ever. but i would have to say that. if not have you tried eucerin? Just put in right after she gets out of the bath tub and dont dry her off completely before putting it on and also right before she goes to bed or when she gets up.

My daughter also gets eczema really bad on her hands - they crack and bleed in our dry Utah winters. Last year I finally got a straight Vitamin E cream at a health food store and we put it on at night & it really makes a big difference. It is the consistency of vaseline and a yellow color. It really does make a big difference.
Good luck!

If it's not very severe, you can usually keep it under control with regular baths immediately followed by application of Vaseline. That helps keep the moisture in. Also, you want to use dye and fragrance free soaps, lotions, etc. (especially laundry soap) Another help is soft water. If you don't have the equipment, you can purchase Calgon and use it in your children's bath. Believe me I feel your frustration. I've lived with it my whole life and now have children who suffer. You can also use hydrocoritzone cream to help with the itching. It's usually worse at the dryer times of the year, so keep their skin moist. I also like Aveeno products. The lotion and soap are really great. They also have oatmeal baths you can use on bad days to help moisturize the skin.

I have battled eczema since my daughter was a baby. Just last year a little over 3 years old a doctor told me to put Hydrocortizone on for the itch then the Aquaphor ointment. It has been the best I ever tried. We haved tried everything, medicines, antihistimines, storiod creams and medicines....The Aquaphor is the best...just be consistant!

We use steriod cream when my daugter's skin is bad. I think over the counter is 1% (like hydrocortozone - I'm sure I spelled that wrong). When it's really bad we go to the prescription 2% and it clears it up. Fragrance free soaps and laundry detergent and not bundled up too much. When she sweats it flares her skin. Her baths are not too hot and only every other day. All this helps her.

My 2-year old's eczema has been flairing up lately and I started using Aquaphor two days ago and there's already a HUGE difference. I was about to take her to the doctor it was so bad and nothing I tried was working. If it gets bad again and the Aquaphor stops working, I will take her to the doctor. When my son was little, we used a cream called Dermatop which was AWESOME. It is a prescribed cream and it was new (and expensive) at the time, so that's why I decided to try the Aquaphor since it's available OTC.

Aquaphor is a big help, but for every day make sure that you use oil of olay or dove soap.... do NOT use ivory or dial. It truly makes the eczema break outs more frequent.

my son is 14 months old and has eczema. Has your doctor talked to you about food allergies, ie. milk? my son's eczema breaks out the worst when he's eaten something that he's allergic to. We use a wash called Mustela. It's made in Europe, but you can buy it at Babies R Us or online. It's about $15 but it lasts for at least 4 months because you use so little, but it doesn't contain soap. Mustela also has many other lotions and washes for sensitive skin. The doctor also told me that I could use Vasoline after a bath, or if I was going to use lotion to use the type that comes in a tub, like Cetaphyl (they also have a wash) or Eucerin. If it comes out of a tube it's probably not thick enough, something about it's emollience. Hope this helps.

H.,
There are two issues for little ones with Eczema, their skin is so sensitive that many treatments are more harmful than helpful in the long run. Also, most eczema medicines are not designed to cure the issue, but make you feel better. The one thing I found from listening to other moms that works for both is Cocoa Butter. I know it sounds simple, but if you use a good natural lotion that has real cocoa or other nut oils in it, then you are not only applying instant relief but it's actually healing the skin. At the age of two, my daughter's eczema was so bad that her little legs were bleeding and cracking. Nothing helped her. Within four months of lathering on good cocoa butter lotion a couple times a day, you couldn't tell she had it. We've kept up the routine, and now at the age of five, she's completely free of it. I used The Body Shop's Cocoa Butter Body Butter or Shea Butter, but anything that is natural and really contains good quantities of it work. Hope this helps you and her to feel good and happy.

My 13mo. old daughter has had problems with eczema. The doctor had us use 1% Hydrocortisone cream on the flare ups. We used it for a day & it cleared up. I'd maybe try .5% Hydrocortisone for a 4month old. We now use Aveeno Baby dry skin lotion & give her occasional Aveeno Baby oatmeal bathes. She has not had any flare ups since we've started regularly moisturizing her (morning & night). I've found that the Burt's Bees diaper rash ointment works great for flare ups on the butt too.
Good Luck!

Here are OTC things we use that have been recommended from our pedi. The 1st 2 can be everyday use, the 3rd is for bigger flare ups:
-Aquaphor (baby version or regular)
-Eucerin cream
-1% OTC hydrosone cream

Also, if your child has any on their fingers, we've used Lansinol stuff (lanolin) that is used for breast feeding mothers. It's safe for the babies to ingest & is really thick to protect their little fingers from moisture to help promote healing.

My son had it on his legs starting around 4 months as well, we found out at 9 months that he is allergic to dogs and the dog at daycare was causing the eczema. Once we got him some Allegra it went away. Before that we would have to put those big band aids on his legs after the lotions and medicines so he wouldn't scratch. That worked really well too.

My DD has eczema, it gets bad in the winter, her skin feels like sandpaper. I don't have an Rx but I use Eucerin morning and night and Lubriderm (or the store brand =to it) 3 times a day. She loves the Eucerin. On the patches you can put a little cortizon cream on it 2 times a day (baby is a little young you might want to see if it is ok with the doc first)

It sounds bad but by DD only gets a bath 1 time a week with soap, and maybe 2 baths a week with just water.

Do not use anything scented. Dove works best. Don't use the baby lotion, it has alcohol in it...it will make the skin worse.

Make sure the kids are getting enough fluids, and crank up a humidifier in your house.

Good luck.

I'm a little backwards from most of the world. I wanted to figure out what was causing my son's eczema. I started cutting things out of his routine. No fragrance in laundry soap. Less baths (b/c he is SO dry he's not a stinky kid. lots of hand washing) with very little if any soap. Cooler water, hot water irritates the skin. Cotton clothing because most fabrics were irritating. Lastly, we realized he's VERY sensitive to dairy products. I can tell when he's been having snitches of cheese or dairy. He flares up again. He drinks soy milk which has just as much calcium as whole cow's milk. NO cheese, yes for soy yogurt, limited, if any dairy. He is doing great! He is never sick. I don't put topical ointment on but maybe 1-2 times per month. I don't want to "cover up" the problem, I want to prevent it. Do lots of research and start cutting things out, and you'll be amazed! Lots of water so the skin can heal itself and keep out irritants.
