My 14 month old daughter has eczema on the back of one knee and the tops of her feet. How do I protect it from the chlorinated pool, the few times I will take her. (She is allergic to lanolin so I can't use Aquaphor.)
Thank you

Hello P., the company that I shop with and my team is partnered with actually has a terrific product for eczema. Also, their cleansers for children would help too. Go to http://www.switchingstores.com/danipen.

can you use Eucerin cream? My daughter also has that behind her knees and in her elbows, and after she's done with the pool for the day (we go every day), we come home and shower. I use Cetaphil to wash her with, and then put a lot of Eucerin cream all over her.

Do you want to try to "get rid" of the eczema symptoms? It's chronic so you really can't cure it, but Natural Health magazine had an article a long time ago (when my son was a year- he's now 8) that recommended Ginkgo Leaf tincture for eczema. My son went from having a severe case of it on his face and other areas to almost "normal" skin... he still has outbreaks now and then and we Aveeno him within two minutes of taking a bath/shower/getting out of the pool (the skin is able to lock in the moisture in the first two minutes of being dried off.)

Go to a natural health food store and you will find Ginkgo Leaf in a small bottle (it can cost around $15, but isn't it worth a try? I was skeptical back then because I had tried everything and was resigned to high-powered perscription cortizones that made my son wail when I applied it.) I put one full dropper in my son's juice every morning and in two weeks his face was normal- I would email a before and after but my pictures weren't digital 7 years ago! I was amazed. I searched to find out if there were any side effects and the only thing I really found was that it could make you restless, so I gave it first thing in the morning and never noticed anything. Don't give your child the actual leaves from a Ginkgo tree if you happen to have one as they can be toxic in high doses, but the tincture isn't.

Good luck and I'd love to hear if you have success if you decide to give it a try! To us, it was like someone waved a magic wand and don't we all want natural miracle cures like that?

I was going to suggest Lansinoh but I re-read your post and that won't work with a lanolin allergy. Check with La Leche League and see what they recommend to breastfeeding mothers who are allergic (or have a baby who is allergic) to wool/lanolin. Anything they suggest to protect and soothe the nipples should work to protect your daughter's eczema. I love Burt's Baby Bees Baby Oil or Baby Skin Creme and use them for all kinds of things like this. I need to get out the door or I would look it up for you.....

Good luck!

Hi Page,
My daughter also has eczema and I have been told to use either baby oil (which might make her a little slippery) or lotion before putting her in the pool.
Hope that helps!

Try vaseline; it'll repel the water.

My daughter had eczema when she was a baby and it's just recently gone away (she's almost 3 now) I never put anything on her when she was in the pool, it didn't hurt her at all. I just made sure to put something on it immediately after. Back then I was using baby eczema cream which worked pretty well. That actually stopped working. Now I use aveeno lotion and I haven't seen any sign of it since I started using that. So I would recommend it if you aren't already using it.

Hi P., I just dealt with this problem this weekend. My daughter's eczema has been completely under control for 8 months now. That is when I began using all Melaleuca products in our home.(www.melaleuca.com) Everything they make is toxin free and extremely gentle on children's skin including the laundry detergent and household cleaners. Since our neighborhood pools opened, she has been getting some breakouts but I just rubbed Renew on them and they have completely cleared up. My plan now is to bathe her and rub Renew on every time we get out of the pool and I am confident we won't have too much trouble. Check out the website and for more info on how these products can help your family, contact me at ____@____.com or ###-###-####.

Can you use vaseline? This is what I use for my son, even at every bath. If not, I would think any oily lotion would keep water from absorbing into the skin.

Does the chlorine help it at all? I would think that it would.
You can rub a little hydrocordizone on it before you go and take it with you in your bag and periodically when she gets out of the water rub some more on it.

Hi, I haven't read the other responses but I know there are lots of Melaleuca Mommies on here and my suggestion is an amazing creme called Renew...this stuff is absolutely amazing. You have to apply it after the pool, probably everytime..but it will be woth it 100%. My daughters excema is completelty gone and managed with this creme.

Anyways, I highly suggest this creme to anyone with any dry skin condition, it's done great things for our family.

Best of luck

Hi, Two of my four sons have eczema and one of those has it terribly. I have to really watch what type of sunscreen I use on him. Some of them make his skin worse. When he was a toddler I used the Mustela baby products on him and they were great. I used their sunscreens on him too. Definitely give her a bath as soon as you get home but if there's a shower there at the pool I'd suggest rinsing her off just to get the chlorine off ASAP.
Oddly enough when we go to the beach the salt water really helps his eczema.

Hi P. - I use Arbonne's baby products on my son - it got rid of his eczema and doesn't have any lanolin in it. It also does not have any petroleum products in it which will protect skin but can in the long term be drying. it does not absorb into skin at all but acts as a barrier. It is also made from crude oil which is a non-renewable resource. I would suggest using the baby wash, oil (for the pool), lotion and sunscreen. If you want to learn more, please let me know and I would be happy to help you. Arbonne's products are pure, safe and beneficial. www.glow.myarbonne.com. Best of luck,

P.

My daughter and husband both have eczema, but not sure how to help with the pool??? I use Aveeno lotion and bath for my daughter. I use Avon Intensive care lotion for my husband. It's like vaseline (blue and white bottle). I hate to hear this for your little one. Hope I could help at all!! I READ MORE RESPONSES and I think Nicole K. does have a very good point about food. My husband's problem gets so much worse when he gains weight. He was also told it was to do with the blood!!

I would think the chlorinated water would be good for the eczema and wouldn't need protecting.

But if it must be, there is a transparent barrier dressing called "Op-site", "Tegaderm" or the CVS brand "Suresite Window". They come in various sizes. The drawback is that they stick pretty good, and should not be taken off for about a week, or it may take some of the loose, damaged skin off with it, leaving tender spots.

I'm not sure about protecting her excema from the pool water. but to get to the bottom of the cause for her excema, you might want to look into food allergies. my son had excema from day one and we have just recently discovered it was related to food allergies. so you might want to check into doing a blood test to check her IgE and IgG food allergies. the IgG is more a delayed reaction to the foods like behavioral problems, attention span problems, and excema. we have discovered my son had lots of IgG food sensitivities. so we have had him on the gluten-free casein-free soy-free diet and have also removed those foods from his diet that he was highly sensitive to on the IgG food allergy test. that has helped his excema alot.

I've had eczema since I was a weester, and my son also has it. I'd recommend using Aveeno baby products, though check the label for lanolin. Let her play in the pool, then give her a bath immediately after and moisturize like crazy! Aveeno also makes sunscreen, so that might be a help. If she's itchy, an over-the-counter mild cortizone will help, too.

Good luck and hope she grows out of it!
