Eczema or Something Else??

I think my son has eczema but I am not totally sure. He keeps having tiny bumps flare up on his body, always in the same places, mainly the legs (around the knee area) and on his face. They are not pimple like, more like itty bitty flesh colored rough bumps that look like the ones that a lot of people get on the back of their arms. It itches so badly that he will scratch until it is red and practically bleeding unless I have hydrocortisone on it. This has been happening for about 3 years off and on and when I did ask a dr. about it a long time ago they told me it was probably either contact dermatitis or a heat rash. However, he is now getting more frequent flare ups and it gets really bad when his skin is particularly dry. I bought a bottle of "Eczema Lotion" at CVS and it does clear the rash up completely but then it comes back as soon as I stop applying it. Chlorine causes it to become VERY bad, as do certain soaps. We use fragrance free and natural products and I do not believe this to be an allergic reaction. I also know it is not staph or scabies, or anything else contagious for that matter because he and his little sister practically spoon in their sleep and she doesn't have anything of the sort. The only thing that I am wondering is if eczema can present itself as bumps and not patches? He has had a few patches when it has gotten really bad but for the most part it is just rough, bumpy skin. Also, anyone with kiddos with eczema have any good natural remedies? I can't imagine that putting a medicated lotion on him for the rest of his life could be good for him :( Thanks!

It definitly sounds like eczema. My Son has eczema and yes, it itches like crazy! There are other factors that can cause eczema besides dry skin.

my son has all the symptoms especially around nose, cheeks and forehead that flared up after he had dengue fever. I did not want to use any over the counter medicine so I researched. Now he washes his face with a diluted baking soda water daily followed with application of virgin coconut oil on the face after the wash.

M. quits job and flourishing career to manage son’s severely worsening eczema, keeping him at home full time, attending multiple doctor appointments, getting blood work done on various diseases, cooking allergy friendly foods and changing our lifestyle to a hypoallergenic one — read, read, read, track, track, track, stress, stress, and more stress.

Finally I found enough time, had enough insight into the condition, and knowledge from reading research papers and studies to start sharing my experience. Now I am runing blog with name of (eczemaliving) This is blog an outcome of my experience in managing my son’s severe eczema, food allergies, asthma, along awesome allergy free-recipes, latest research and treatment plans that worked for us.

Yes it sounds like eczema , you need to keep using cream so it doesn't flare up again. I use Eucerin on my kids daily after baths and if it flares up and is particularly itchy and red I apply a cortizone cream first and then the Eucerin on top.

Hey there Robyn,
It definitly sounds like eczema. My daughter and I both have eczema and yes, it itches like crazy!! I've been using a lotion from a wholesale company called Renew lotion. It is clinically tested to be twice as effective as the dermatologist recommended Eucerin. Matter of fact, my daughter had a prescription lotion we used a couple years ago before I found the renew lotion and the renew works hands down better then the eucerin and prescription. There are other factors that can cause eczema besides dry skin. Your son could be allergic to the detergents, fabric softners, dry sheets or even the bath wash you are using. We are a family of sensitive skin, so the wholesale store we have a membership with has been a God send!! If you are interested in hearing how to get a membership to this store or want to learn more about the products, just login to my website www.MomsLivingWithPurpose.com and I would be more then happy to get you more information! They have amazing chemical free detergents, lotions, baby products and even cleaning products that can be causing your sons eczema. Hope that helps!!

Ask a good pediatric dermotologist....it could very well be what is called molluscum. 3 of my 5 kids had it. it is very treatable but also contagious.

I was hoping to find a image guide, but here is a descriptive website:

http://www.healthy-skin-guide.com/diagnose-my-skin-rash.html

Psoriasis runs in my family and it is so IRRITATING! You start out with a gentle caress to soothe it and suddenly you find that you have scraped the top layer of your skin off.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry as much about the length of time he uses a medicated creme, as i would worry about a toddler putting a medicated creme in his mouth.

Anyway, know that it will give him the crankies, because it can be painful.

Hi Robyn,
Sometimes essential fatty acids can help. Shaklee makes an execellent supplement for children called Mighty Smart. Their organic baby lotion is also very helpful. I'm not sure which laundry products you are using, but some in the stores aren't always as good as they are advertised to be. Shaklee has a Get Clean line that is awesome. You can find more information on all these at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife
Hope this is helpful and you find a solution.

It does sound like eczema, especially with it being in the spots you mentioned. My son's eczema is pretty bad, but using Ceravae lotion works really well for him. We buy it at Walgreen's - I haven't seen it in many other stores but Walgreen's always seems to have it. As soon as he gets out of the bath every night, we slather it all over him. It really helps with breakouts. We do have a couple of prescription medicines to put on when he is really bad, but haven't needed them as much since we started using Ceravae.
