Eczema and Sunscreen

My two year old gets eczema from eating gluten. We try to keep her off of it completely but there are exceptions here and there. Her eczema seems to flare up worse each successive time she has gluten. Is this possible? I can't tell if I am imagining it or not. Anyway, we live in Boulder, CO one of the sunniest places in the country. Sunblock seems to really irritate the eczema when it is present and it gets even more red and itchy. Just wondering if any other mamas have had experience with this and if so, other than the obvious of keeping her gluten free, are there any sunblocks that might be better or worse? And I was told she may outgrow the gluten intolerance--is it possible for her to become more sensitive over time?

What can I do next?

Is it the sun block or the actual exposure to sunshine. My 13 yr old started having issues with eczema when she was about 2 (she is also lactose intolerant) and sunlight made it alot worse. You could also check with a dermotologist to see if they have any recommendations - we use Aveeno and have had no issues. Also, what lotions are you trying for the actual eczema? We use Elidil (sp) and it was a life saver :) It does get better - especially when they can start taking care of it themselves. My daughter can "tell" when she is going to have a flare so she can start treating immediately. When she was little, I had to wait until I could see it to do anything.

Good luck!

There's a company in Boulder called Goddess Garden that has a kids sunscreen. My daughter has all kinds of skin issues and this is the only one that doesn't make it worse. The founder created it when her daughter had a problem with sunscreens. They carry it at Whole Foods and I believe some Pharmacas. http://www.goddessgarden.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY.... I would contact the founder, Nova, and see if you can buy one of those little packs to test it out--no reason buying a whole tube if it makes it worse. There's also a local skincare company called NovAurora that is all gluten free. http://www.auroranova.com/

I don't know about outgrowing a gluten allergy, but eczema is a frequent allergy symptom. Our daughter gets it and hand sanitizer will make it worse, but we can avoid that. I would look for the ingredient that causes her issue and see if you can find one that does not. Could there be one tht your doctor could precribe? Maybe a dermatologist could suggest one too. Teaching her to love big, floppy hats may be in your future!

I would speak to your pediatrician about the allergy, and have it tested to see if it is getting worse. With each exposure, she could be building antibodies, and true food allergies vs sensativities can be a really big deal.

I hope she feels better,
M.

My DD had severe eczema as a pre-schooler. Even the so-called hypoallergenic sunscreen and sunscreen marketed for sensitive skin would irritate and cause her to rash. Walgreens brand did not work at all. Now my girls are 8 and 10, and the ONLY sunscreen that works for them is Waterbabies. I prefer the Target knock off brand of Waterbabies because it is less sticky, and rubs in easier, not so white and glue-like. We use SPF 45 or 50. The SPF 70 or 80 is too thick and sticky. Don't put sunscreen on the areas her eczema is flared up, it will make it worse. I just avoid sunscreening the bad areas like elbow and knee folds and inner thighs if it has been inflamed there recently. Also, chlorine is bad, bad, bad for them. We rinse the girls off after every swim at the pool, and apply plain vaseline to moisturize behind their knees and in inner thighs when the skin is freshly dried off and soft. This locks in the moisture and does wonders for their skin each summer when we do it regularly. Good luck!

If you haven't already tried the Mustela products you should. I use the wash/shampoo, lotion and sunscreen on my daughter and haven't had problems with her eczema in years. You can find it at Babies R Us. It's great stuff.

I don't think it is your imagination about the eczema flare ups. My husband used to get flare ups when he was stressed out. So it makes perfect sense.

I have very sensitive skin and have had a difficult time with sunblocks. Be sure the ones you are using are paba free. This one has worked for me:
