If anyone has some eczema remedies, I would love to hear them! My two year old son has had eczema on the back of his knees since he was a baby. I have tried the steriod cream perscribed by my doctor, but it didn't really clear it up. It was fine this winter, but now that there is more moisture in the air it is really bothering him. He has iched it raw and has some scabbing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

My daughter also had bad eczema, then I found out about Arbonne. They have a baby line that is good for eczema. Within three days of using it, it started to clear up and now she is completely rid of it. I also had tried everything on her. I started selling the products because I believe in them so much. They're botanically based with no mineral oil, no fragrances, and no harmful ingreadiant. I would be happy to send you a sample to try or if you'd like to order it there is a 45 day money back garantee. Give me a call or email me.

Melaleuca has a great lotion, Renew, that is great for it, as well as other skin conditions. I would also highly recommend not using bleach and other store brand cleaning supplies, which contain bleach and other harsh chemicals. Melaleuca carries nontoxic products that are very economical. Give it a try, everything is 100% guaranteed.

Hi M. K,

My nephew had a very bad case of eczema. My sister used everything prescribed nothing seemed to look. Finaly another doctor told her, everynight after his bath put Crisco Cooking Oil on his bad points. Yes, Crisco in the big blue can and it worked. It wasn't over night but she saw improvement within a couple of weeks. It's messy but worth it.

My son had horrible eczemz when he was younger. I took him to a Dermatologist. He told me to bathe him daily with a free and clear wash like Cetaphil or the store brand works just as well. Keeping the skin moisturized is very important. We used Creamy Petroleum Jelly ($1.68 at Walmart) on him 3 times a day at first. The doc also prescribed Triamcinelon ointment and Desonide ointment which are both steroids, and also a script for Mupirocin which is an antibiotic to help clear up any infection from scratching. He also takes Peri-Actin to help with the itching. I always kept my sons nails short so he could not scratch too bad. He is pretty much eczema free now except for a small patch or two that pops up, but as soon as I put the ointment on it goes right away! Not sure where you are located but the Dermatologist at Childrens Mercy Hospital are great!! Hope this helps. E.

Congrats on the new born...two kids are so much fun/work. It looks like you have got a lot of great advice and things that I know work from the outside. However, do consider that eczema could possibly be triggered by a food allergy. For my kids it was milk products...pasteurized milk products. www.realmilk.com We went to raw milk and kefir (local farmers) and my kids cleared up right away. Also, I have heard several times that dry skin of any kind is a sure sign of essential fatty acid deficiency...that would be good fats/oils. So, you may look at the diet again and see if you can add flax oil/fish oils to diet...nuts, avocados, olive oil, salmon, etc. Oh, one other line to look into would be Burt's Bees...we have found a huge helf w/ the Body Butter right after a bath. Oh, and even that tube of lanonlin for breast feeding moms...I put that on after a bath instead of vasoline and it is not made w/ petroleum and it really helps. Lanonlin is amazing on dry skin. The more natural the product going on the outside or the inside is much better cuz they all go to the inside anyway.

what a battle, so many moms and kiddos deal with this..i've seen it on here lots of times so i'd suggest reading others' responses as well...my son has it too (and his seems to be worse in winter time) and we have tried about 15 different things. we finally settled (and it doesn't "cure" it but it seems to help the most) on aveeno baby soothing relief moisture cream. it's not terribly expensive and is free from dyes and fragrances - which is key for eczema. like i said his never completely goes away (and nothing has done that) but i use it every time i change him in his trouble spots (his are the lower back and his arms, spreading to about his entire body when he has breakouts) and it seems to keep it in check. i do notice though that if he's teething, has diarrhea or any other "bug", it flares up and i've yet to find anything that really gets rid of it. if you find something let me know!

My grandaughter had eczema when she was 9 years old. She had been to dermatologists everywhere and was on steriod creams and oral steriods. Nothing seemed to really work for her and she was on drugs not good for such a young child. I was introduced to a product from Arbonne International. It was baby lotion. It took her eczema away. She is 14 now and still uses the arbonne baby lotion for breakouts. She will probably use it the rest of her life. The products are pure, safe and beneficial. Alot of time, children have a reaction to fragrances and mineral oil, arbonne has none of those. I can send you a free sample to try. Just send me your address to my e-mail at ____@____.com wont be disappointed!!

My youngest daughter also suffers from eczema. She will be four in Sept, and I will say the older she gets, the better it gets. When she was very little, hers would get so bad on the backs of her knees, it was oozing. We had to be very careful not to let it get infected, since it was an open wound. We were also given the steroid cream and it actually did help, but I was very cautious about using it, because I was told that it would thin the skin out with long term use. We had a nanny who was very into natural and alternative medicines who told us about "Emu Oil". It is actually a lotion. She got us a bottle of it, and we started putting it on her legs and it worked wonderfully. I am not sure where it is sold locally, but I am sure you could search online. The other product that we use alot, now that it isn't as severe, it Eucerene's "Calming Creme" It is an extra thick lotion and can by bought just about anywhere, and it with regular lotions. It is about $10 for a good size tube. I hope this helps, although your sons eczema triggers seem opposite of my daughters. Hers is worst in the winter with the dry air...we run a humidifier in her room everyday, and is nonexistent in the summer. Hope this helps and good luck!

I see you've gotten a ton of responses, and some of this may be redundant, but this is what I've done for my daughter's severe eczema (she's now 19 months and it started when she was 2 months):

bath, only once per day, warm (not hot) water, Aveeno baby wash

Acid Mantle cream (prescription) lightly applied after bath

dress him to be on the cool side, rather than warm

nails trimmed short

My son has eczema and this is what we do. He only gets a bath every other day (of course if he really needs one we give him one) and use cetaphil as a cleanser. You might want to try and find someone who sells Arbonne products. They are a little pricey, but they have no harsh ingredients and help a ton. I have friends that swear by the baby wash. I use the lotion myself.
Good luck!

Hi Micheala -

I have not personally dealt with eczema with my kids but my sister has with her little one. She was told to switch to Cetaphil soap or a naturally based soap - NOT Johnson & Johnson - everyone seems to use that thinking it is the best and a dermatologist pointed out to me that it is actually not good for skin much less sensitive baby skin. It has a lot of chemicals in it! Also, has anyone recommended a water softener to you? My husband gets an eczema type issue on his skin during the winter and since we got a water softener that has been much improved! And I saw a previous post about Eucerin. I have heard that works pretty well and one of the products my husband uses is Bert's Bees and his skin is in good shape. I love Bert's Bee's! Using natural based products have done a world of good in our house with asthma, allergies, and skin conditions! The big yucky ingredients we stay away from is petrolatum, sodium laurel sulfates, lanolin, etc. Those ingredients tend to hold in toxins and not let our skin breathe or make it's own moisture. Also - Arbonne makes great skincare products. I have been selling it for years and I know that it would work great if it fits within your budget - if so try it out! Whatever you use, I hope you find something that gives your little guy some relief! :) God Bless!

The generic for Eucerin has worked well for us, too. Fewer baths or showers (if you are giving one every day). Or if you have to wash him off don't use soap every time just when you need it. All these deplete his natural skin oils which ward off eczema. After every bath or shower apply the lotion. This should help in prevention. Then you can use the steriod cream if the eczema comes back.

Hi M.,

My daughter had eczema real bad until we started drinking MonaVie. It is an all natural fruit blend made from the Amazon grown Acai berry and 19 other body beneficial fruits from around the world. This juice is very high in antioxidants and phytonutrients and it helps the body heal from within. My kids (all 3 of them) drink just 2 oz a day and we have had great success. It has not only helped thier skin, but also we have been free of all allergies and asthma this year!!! It is a great product and the best part is that it is all natural and it has allowed my family to stop taking almost all medications.

Hi M.,

We had this problem. It is usually an allergy. It helped us to put extra virgin coconut oil on it. I like it because it is chemical free in processing and it really works.

Milk still makes my son's eczema flare up. He can tolerate about a cup a day but no more. We started drinking raw milk and it doesn't bother him at all. Good quality fish oil like Carlson's or Spectrum helps, too.

The thing that scared me was when a naturopath explained that what is happening on the skin is happening inside the body, too, due to the allergy. Wheat and milk are common allergens.

Good luck

I don't know if it is actually the moisture in the air that is causing his flair ups. It may just be that with it being warmer his skin isn't able to keep up with the demands of normal sweating that your body does as part of cooling your body. The allergist I initially took my son to told me that eczema is a genetic inability of a persons skin to hold moisture. That is why you need to keep moisturizers on it consistantly. ALSO, she recommended that when he bathes, that he should at the minimum, soak in the tub for 20 minutes.
(Watch this summer and see if his skin gets better after being in the swimming pool for lengths of time.)
Try the soaking, and we have had a Eucerin based compound made up at the allergists prescription. It has antibiotic cream, and some steroid mixed together in a Eucerin base. It works like a charm.
If he's itching, try also Benydryl, it helps block the histamine reactions that cause the itching.
Good luck! Keep trying, you'll find something that will work best for you.

My daughter has had it since she was 6 months or so she is now 5. I took her to a dermatologist about a month ago and was told to use her Protopic (prescription) one week then use Cortisone 10 the next week. I was also told to put vaseline on her before her skin was dry. This has helped some however she has Molluscum Contagiosum (MC) so her skin is even worse right now because I can not treat the areas where her MC is with any of this stuff because the MC needs to dry up. It is so hard right now for her. She gets the eczema really bad behind her knees as well as the bends in her elbows. Right now I am able to keep vaseline on her knees to help keep them moist.

As a home daycare provider, i have been watching a 1 year old girl who has eczema as well. Here are a couple things we have learned from experience and from a dermatologist.
#1: Tide is the worst detergent for eczema
#2: Aveeno has a soap that is gentle and helps with eczema
#3: Aveeno also makes an oatmeal bath that releives itching... we use it for lots of things... it's great!
#4: Be sure to keep his nails cut very short at all times so he can't do as much damage. :)

Good luck and i hope he gets to feeling better soon. That has to be so irritating to him.

I can only give you my personal experience story, but my son flaired up with Eczema when he was about two months old and it covered his face like a big scab. It was terrible. His allergy doctor recommended the Aquaphor brand Eucerin. Its gross, and like vasaline, but we greased him up every night after bath from head to toe and it fixed the problem as long as we did it every day. Now that he is 3 we have gradually been able to switch to just the plain aquaphor lotion every night after bath head to toe and it stays pretty calm. When the grass is cut or he gets really hot it flairs, but its always better by the next day after a lotion rub down. Good luck girlfriend.

I have been struggling with eczema all my life (I'm 48 years old). I can remember as a kid having to soak my hands in some purple mixture and grease them up with Crisco at bedtime and cover them with cotton gloves.

As an adult, usually a few applications of prescription cream treats the problem, but I've been in a "flare" for the last six months and that doesn't seem to do the trick.

Certain foods, like citrus fruits and tomato-based products, trigger eczema. I've started researching eczema on the Internet and there is a lot of concensus about diet and stress as triggers.

Cetaphil cream! My 2 year old son has had real exzema problems for a while (red patches and weird bumpy patches of skin) and the only thing that keeps it at bay is a daily application of cetaphil cream. We also bath him every other day b/c the water really contributes to the dryness, even though we put oil in the tub water. When our Dr. saw his legs, arms and all the red patches he wanted to prescribe a steroid cream. I opted to first try the cetaphil and am so glad I did b/c longterm use of the steroid cream from what I've heard isn't great. Good luck!

I know you have received many responses, but I don't think anyone else has mentioned the use of probiotics. This is the "good bacteria" that your gut needs for proper absorbtion of your food. You can get it through eating yogurt or as a supplement. My 2 year old daughter had a horrible flare-up, almost from head to toe. I took her to our chiropractor who gave us a probiotic powder supplement to give her daily. That, along with Claritin to control the itch and steroid cream for the really bad spots, it cleared up in a few days. I also realized after starting the probiotic, that she had been chronically constipated. The probiotic really helped her have much larger, softer, and regular bowel movements. That was 7 months ago. Once that bad flare-up cleared, I now give her the probiotic (powder mixed into applesauce, yogurt, or pudding) twice a week now to keep her regular and her skin has remained clear. (occasional spot on one elbow and knee that I put Eucerin on as needed)
You can do an internet search on eczema and probiotics to read more about the research that has been done.
Also keep in mind that eczema is often related to food allergies. My daughter was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with a severe peanut allergy!

I didn't read through all of the responses, so I am sorry if I am repeating something already said. I have a family of redheads, and we all struggle from time to time with eczema. This is what I do and it works REALLY well and is fairly cheap. When you bathe your little one, get an old (clean) sock and put about a cup of quick oats in it and use that as a washcloth. It is cheaper than those oatmeal baths you can get at the pharmacy and it works. Another thing I do for flare-ups is add a few drops (about 6) of Tea Tree Oil to the bath water. That kills any bacteria in the water and helps gently cleanse the skin. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Hello, my friend's daughter ended up with chicken pox on top of having ecxzema. Well, while she was in the hospital, the dermatologist/doctor told her to bath her daughter with water and 2 cap fulls of bleach, to sooth and heal the dryness and itching. Afterwards, use pure/raw shea butter (NOT cocoa butter.) I ordered mine off ebay, for real cheap. She said her daughter's skin feels like a newborn. The doctor also told her not to waste anymore money on the eucerin type creams. Pure vasoline is all that is needed, if you cannot get the shea butter. Good luck.

Congrats on the new addition to your family! I have four children and 3 of them have fought this nasty little monster continuously since birth. I can tell you what has worked for them. If you have not tried a medication (prescription only) called Elidel, it worked wonders for my son. It is not a steroid cream but it helped. Of course the usual not to bathe him in hot water but in luke warm or tepid water. I have also found a soap that you can find at Walmart and most stores called Cetaphil. It is fantastic and acutally works wonders on all kinds of skin issues, it is very lightweight and was recommended to me by a dermatologist years ago and I have used it ever since and have switched everyone in my family over to it. Last but not least another medication you can find anywhere is called Aquafor. It comes in a tub (which works well when trying to apply to squirming children-haha). It is like petrolium jelly, but wow it works wonders and makes even not affected skin very soft to touch.
I will warn to keep a very close eye on him when he is scratching and make sure that his nails are trimmed and his hands are as clean as you can get a 2 year old's. I mention this because one of my twin daughters ended up in the hospital at 2 months of age with cellulitis due to staph getting into one of the sores from her eczema.
I hope that some or any of this helps him, I know how hard it is to watch them and feel helpless to do something.
Good luck!!

Hi M., My daughter is 6 and has had it since she was a baby also. Within the last couple of months I have found using the following products have help her tremendously:
Biokleen Degertgent
Ecover fabric softener
Nautural soaps (vanicream soap) and shampoos

These can be purchased from Dierbergs and are chemical, dye and fragrance free.

I was using ALL free and Bounce free, however changing to these products have really helped.

I was using Vaseline daily on trouble spots - steroid creams when it was really bad, however I haven't used it since I started. The real test will be this summer when we use bug spray and sun tan lotion. I used Off family and Neutrogena sun spray, however her skin was terrible. I plan on changing. My derm recommending Vericream products.

Check out http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/browse.php?category=baby... for products that have the least amount of chemicals.

Hope this helps. Good luck

100% natural emu oil. Sounds kinda crazy, but my daughter got eczema & changed the soap, got steroid cream, didn't help, got steroid shots, didn't help. So I got on the internet & searched it out. I found this information on the emu oil & decided it was cheap & natural, worth a try. It cleared it up & she hasn't had it flare up since...almost 2 yrs ago. I totally swear by it. It got worse for the 1st 1 1/2 wks or so, but then it went away completely. Good luck!

Hi M.,

melaleuca has a great treatment and it is al natural, i don't do the business anymore becaus eit was time consuming and I don't really like doing it, but the products works great for eczema, my daughter had it in her feet when she was two, it was bad and since I use the renew lotion and the Gold bar soap, it never came back and you don't have to deal with corticoids.
I woul be happy to let you know how to purchase here if you want or I can also give you the info on the business if you are interested on that as well. It really works!

Hi Mechaela,

My son has eczema also, He usually gets dryer in the winter time, or if he is sweeting a lot in the summer, He used to have black blotched on the back of his legs. We have a prescription from he Dr. also however we also use Cortizone over the counter. The creamy kind works better in healing the scabs and bring color back to normal, and we use the more greasy kind to maintain it along with aveeno product. Also our Dr. told us to minumize his baths to one per day, and because he's younger if there was a day he could skip a bath and just be wiped down with a damp cloth that would be great also. Also ensure that the water is not to warm when taking a bath. showers are better for eczema however your son is 2 so that would not be as easy. I hope this inforamtion helps.

Thanks,
M. C.

I have a remedy I'd love for you to try. I have started a home business with a wellness company called Melaleuca. You can see my business listed with this website. They have products like an amazing lotion called Renew. It has helped many people with eczema and made their symptoms disappear. It takes time and you have to use it religiously. I have a friend with SEVER psoriosis and it completely healed him. It took time, but using the products Melalecua has to offer changed his life forever. He even has begun to grow hair on his head again! My phone number is ###-###-#### and I'd love to help you get these amazing products at a low cost. I really just want your boy to stop suffering with his eczema. I use it on my children ages 2 and 3 and will use them on my little guy due in July. I'd love to hear from you and see how I can help. The products are very affordable, so don't be afraid that you'll have to spend gobs of money! I hope that I can help! Contact me anytime-###-###-####!
