I just wanted to see when your infant started eating every 4 hours...And, did you "push" or "encourage" this schedule or let it naturally happen? Thanks!

My twins didn't start eating 4 hours apart until right around a year old, and they are breastfed babies. I did start to notice that around 9 months they would go 4 hours after their morning feeding until snack time, but this change came around naturally, and it was only in the morning. Even now (they're 15 months), with a set schedule, I still listen to their demands. They will sometimes get a bit crabby when it's snack time, so we'll give it to them a bit earlier. Still listen to your baby's cues.

It all depends. Some breastfed infants want to snack and snack and snack all day long and/or need to eat every 2-3 hours because the milk is digested so easily and quickly while others are satisfied to go 3-4 hours in between meals. With formula fed infants, they may tend to go 3-4 hours in between from the get-go but have days when they want to eat every 2 -2.5 hours.

When your baby is young you should follow his lead and feed him when he's hungry. Even as adults, sometimes we like to space our meals out on one day and then on other days our appetites are a little more voracious and we want to eat sooner. A baby is growing and needs the food for proper development.

You might be able to see something a little more predictable and with more space around 2-4 months (again, depending on your child), but if he's under 2 months just follow his lead. Right now it is all about meeting his needs.

Good luck and I totally understand what you're saying - I have a 3 week old and I would LOVE for him to be able to go 4 hours in between the feedings (he's starting to give us a longer span over night - score!), but right now he needs to know that when he asks to eat, I'm going to feed him. It won't be long, though, until he can stretch it out a bit so I'm just being patient until that time. It'll happen for your child too - just be patient and follow his/her lead :)

My daughter nurses on demand. She's almost 9 months and doesn't go 4 hours without food during the day. After she started baby food at 6 months every now and then I'll get a 4 hour stretch at night. I haven't pushed for it thou either.
I don't do more than 4 hours during the day without food, now that I think about it :)

I do not think my infants ever ate every four hours. They went every three hours once I started baby food. I am not sure if you are nursing or formula feeding, my kids all nursed.
