Easy Question About Eczema

Looking to you moms with children with eczema. My son has mild eczema, so mild that we often do nothing because he has no symptoms. But in these long winter months, he is having a little flare up, and I was just wondering what OTC creams or products you have found work best for your child. Also interested in any other "best practices" for dealing with eczema.

And for those of you who are thinking that I am just too lazy to look it up online, you're right! But I choose to say that I am just looking for tried and true advice from those of you who have been there... LOL

Thanks!!!

Both my kids had it as smaller babies/toddlers - not horrible, but it did flare up; usually behind the knees. We live in CO - so it's very DRY! I used Cetaphil (WalMart/Target/Walgreens...) - in the tub. I LOVE this stuff. No perfumes and very gentle, but very good. After baths especially LATHER it on - and repeat throughout the day. Good luck - spring is on the way!

try putting a few drops of essential oils, Rosemary and Lavender, in his bath. My friend's son was using a $50 tube of perscription cream each week before they tried the essential oils. After using them he was able to put away the cream totally. His only complaint was he smelled like a GURL! LOL...

My son doesn't have eczema, but I get it on my hands--especially in the winter. Right now I am loving the Aveeno Baby cream for eczema. It's VERY moisturizing. I have also heard of (but never tried) a product called A-Mantle (Mantel?) You can ask your pharmacist for it.

Our son has mild eczema, and our pediatrician recommended Eucerin cream when he was younger. We have used it ever since and our son is now 5. We use plain Dove soap for his bath and apply the eucerin after. He has rarely had a flareup and when he does, the lotion works wonders!

Our pediatrician had us see a Dermatologist for our daughter around this time last year for the same thing.

Her recommendations:
1. Aquaphor - can purchase it anywhere
2. Vanicream - you can get it at any pharmacy, but you may have to ask if they have it stocked (if not they can order it). A big tub costs ~$10.

We lather her up from head to toe immediately after each bath (with Vanicream), and we have very few issues. It is a good, thick lotion with no added fragrances, etc. to aggravate the skin.

My child does not have eczema, but I have heard that Eucerin is good. I spoke to a dermatologist (who used to be a pediatrician) a month ago, as my son was having very dry skin this winter. He said cooking oils are great for the skin. He suggested safflower oil and sunflower oil. I used olive oil, since I had that at home. Like I said - not sure if oils okay for eczema, but apparently they're fine for the face to moisturize.

I too am a HUGE fan of Renew from Melaleuca. The stuff is beyond incredible. My husband and daughter have skin issues. We have tried everything, right up to $200 prescriptions. The best thing, by far and away, is using Renew lotion. We buy the big bottle in two packs and the price goes down a bit.

I also use the Melaleuca soap, but it's not a necessary part of the equation.

I have to say, I would guarantee you'd like it too. Everyone I know who has tried it loves the stuff like a fine wine! :)

Hi L.! I would say don't bother with any special creams etc. The best treatment so far that I have found is either extra virgin coconut oil or Evening Primrose Cream by Burts Bees. Both are readily available and are extrememly effective.
Also, a friend of mine was talking about how using a humidifier in her house kept her daughter's eczema at bay.
Fish oils are another great thing for exzema. Our whole family uses them to combat severe dry skin.

So, 3 simple steps. Humidity in the air, topical creams, and fish oils to moisturize from the inside out.

One person mentioned Renew lotion and gave a very reasonable price. The problem with Renew is that you have to sign up for Melaleuca and purchase a minimum of $60 or more PER MONTH to get it. You can get the same or better results with the products I listed above.
Good luck in your search!

Hi L.

I remember those long winter months in PA, I was born and raised in Pittsburgh.

I have a friend here in Dallas and her grandson was having the same problems and I gave her some of Arbonne's Baby Care products to try and it cleared up. Now Arbonne is the only products her daughter uses on her sons. http://www.arbonne.com/products/baby/

Wash the child (of any age, not just infants) with the Arbonne Baby Care Wash. Follow this with the ABC oil. Because this oil is not made with mineral oil, but natural safflower, sunflower, jojoba and shea butter oils, the oil is not occlusive. It soaks into the skin quickly, allows the skin to breathe, and does not clog pores. If baths are given at night, use the ABC lotion the following morning before dressing.

Please feel free to contact me, if I can be of any futher help.

I hope your son's eczema gets better soon. Stay Warm.

All the best
B.

The best treatment and proactive response to eczema is keeping the body moisturized with lotion. It sounds like in your son’s case, any lotion will do. Meluleuca has a product called Renew™ Intensive Skin Therapy that works really well with eczema. Its $9.99 for 8 oz. but I guarantee you’ll notice a difference in his condition. We use it on my 1 year old daughter and the ingredients are safe and natural. Check out www.melaleuca.com You have to be a member to order the products yourself, but I could place an order for you if you want to try it out. Let me know if you are interested.
