I am having the family over (13 of us) for dinner and I want to get a great ham since it will be my main course. I seldomly make ham, so II'm conflicted. Does it matter if I buy it at the grocers and doctor it up with a good recipe or am I better off spending more and buying it from a ham shop? A local ham shop, which gets raves reviews for their ham, has a 22 lb. ham for $70. Do you think this would be the way to go, and do you think this will be large enough for 13 people plus leftovers? Or, should I just get one at Krogers which would be a lot cheaper?

Thanks moms!

What can I do next?

You can expect an adult person to eat about 1/2lb of sliced meat if there are sides that they like. If they only like the ham then they can eat more and more. So if they like the sides you are planning I would think you will have enough meat.

I will give you one word of advice.....low or slow. Depending on what neck of the USA you are from it is different. We call is a low oven if the temp is low but I have heard some call it a slow oven too.

I can tell you that if you heat it more slowly the brownsugar/glaze will not burn to a crisp if it is left in the oven too long. I used a recipe for Apricot Mustard Ham from Taste of Home for years. My hubby hates it but it soooo odd flavored to me that I just love it.

Here is a recipe that is very similar, I think that I put clove things in their pod like things, they look almost like a sticker, then I mixed the preserves and dry mustard and smeared that goo on the ham with the cloves spread out and stuck in, then I used my hand to squish the brown sugar onto it. Made my way the brown sugar can easily burn to a black crisp finish that is not yummy if the oven is too hot.....

This is a blog type post at Taste of Home. This mom was wanting everyone to post their favorite ham recipes and there are lots of them that sound very yummy.

I've had many hams (Costco, Grocery Store, etc.) and HONEY BAKED HAMS are the BEST--hands down! Splurge!

I got an 11 lb. spiral sliced ham and I'm having 20-22 people.

For 13 people you'll have WAY too much ham with a 22 pounder! I'd get about 10 lb. MAX for 13 people unless you want LOTS of ham leftover.

Are you talking about HoneyBaked hams? I think they're over rated and very pricey.

The secret with ANY spiral ham is to "heat" not "cook" it on low heat. Ham is already coked. What you do is warm it.

Good luck!

I wouldn't pay $70.00 for a ham. They're so easy to heat up at home if you get a precooked one. There are tons of recipes you can use to doctor it up. Good luck!

As long as you don't buy the super cheap pressed ham type, it's safe to get it anywhere. The hams from the ham stores are delicious. Seriously delicious. But if you buy a good quality ham from Krogers and doctor it, yours will be delicious too. I personally like the spiral cut hams, and you can get those in the grocery store. Some come with brown sugar packets but you can make that yourself.

Oh - 22 lbs is way more than you need for 13 people, in my opinion. If you get a ham with a bone in it, you'll get maybe 2-3 servings per pound. If you get a boneless one (my personal preference), you can serve 4-5 people per pound. I like leftovers, so for 13 people I'd buy a 7 pound boneless spiral cut ham.

I would not spend that much money.

Buy one at your local grocery store.

I think it's easier to serve, you get more from a the non-spiral, packaged type of ham.
