I'm on my first pregnancy, and before I got pregant I usally took some otc sleeping pills to help me sleep. But now that I'm pregnant, I can't take those anymore. Does anyone have any tips on how to get to sleep without medication?

What can I do next?

Congratulations!

Well, just being pregnant, you will get fatigued.
As for falling asleep, I think you just have to tough it out... and do NOT take anything, herbal or otherwise, because you are pregnant. Or unless it is COMPLETELY approved for pregnant women. And ALWAYS, tell your OB/GYN of any concerns or questions.

Perhaps, do yoga, or deep breathing... this helps some women to relax...

All the best,
Susan

G.,

This is something that you should discuss with your OBGYN...my doc was pretty clear with me that OTC meds are not recommended, even the ones they say are 'safe'. I get pretty bad hay fever, and had to tough it out for the first couple of weeks but after that I had no symptoms and felt great...but expect fatigue.

There are phases throuhgout pregnancy where you can feel exhausted and other where it feels like you could move a bus if you needed to...just take care of yourself and keep an open dialogue with your doctor.

Congrats and Good Luck!

G.,
I was very hesitant to take anything over the counter or otherwise during my pregnancy but my high-risk perinatologist offered a couple different prescriptions as options when I was having a difficult time sleeping. I didn't utilize them but I would talk to your ob/gyn regarding your difficulty.
Take care and Congrats!

Ever since my first girl came, I've been able to sleep easily without meds (before I was super addicted). I'm now pregnant with #2 (we found out a day before you) and having trouble sleeping. My doc said its the extra progesterone. I'm taking 1000mg of calcium at nite which seems to help. And don't worry, soon you'll be so exhausted, you'll sleep standing up.

Try a supplement called natural calm made for pregnant women- it contains magnesium which helps relax you and put you to sleep. Also, homeopathic meds are safe while pregnant. You may want to try hylands calm forte. I believe benedryl, zyrtec and a few other allergy meds are safe while pregnant. Check with your doc, but allegies can be treated while pregnant with those meds and they also make you sleepy. always ask your doc first but maybe something mild in the beginning will transtion you through this sleepless stage. Naturally, your hormones will adjust in the 2nd trimester and you wont need anything. I had the same problem during my pregnancy and it resolved itself by week 12 or 14. I got insomnia again at the very end of both my pregnancies and my doc prescribed benedryl both times! That was in the third trimester so double check with your doc on that during the first trimester. Most likely it is safe though because what do pregnant women with severe allergies take? or hives? benedryl. Hope you sleep soon. I know how hard that can be! Good Luck :)
