My almost 11 month old son just had ear tubes on put in a week ago. During the process, the doctor had to drain both ears of fluid. He was put on antibiotic eardrops to use 2x/day for 5 days. He has been holding the back of his head, especially when he is eating or trying to fall asleep. He is acting very fussy during dinner (when he holds on to the back of his head the most).I took him to the doctor for an unrelated incident, but had her check his ears just in case. She said everything looked fine. Should I be worried? Has anyone elses child behaved this way after having ear tubes put in?

What can I do next?

My son had tubes put in and did not come out from under for hours. He is highly allergic to drugs (as we found out) SoI would go back to the doctor that did the surgery and let HIM figure out WHY he is behaving in this way. Keep a record of the number of times he does it each day or hour and during what activity ---
9am holding head crawling around
10am holding head eating Cheerios
This way when you go you can show him EXACTLY what is going on and not just a "hysterical mother" in his office.

Realize that he will at first reject that his work has anything to do with the problem. But be persistant and get to the bottom of the issue. "But he never held his head before this surgery---"What else do you think could have caused this problem or behavior?" are questions you need to ask to move him from where his pride is to where you need to be to help your child. Help your surgeon to figure out what is happening to your child. Think about it Why would you hold your head all day? -pain dizzy, full filling, aching. buzzing, something left in the ear canel. It could be a number of things but you must act as your child's advocate and solve this problem for him.

Doctors are JUST people and as people they can make mistakes or overlook something. My son did not hold his head at all after his surgery. He did however say "Mommy, I hear the birdies, do you hear the birdies?" I cried. I had not realized how deaf he was going. It was only when I realized that his speech was down to two words that I demanded he be seroiusly taken a look at. His doctor said "Well he is so advanced at his manual skills, Momma Don't Worry! I showed him a chart(in his baby book) with his vocabulary skills at 5 months and again at 9,10, and 11 months and he very vividly saw the regression in his speech abalities.
I shutter to think what would have happened to his hearing I had not pushed for a solution. PUSH and find out what is going on,

Keep Mothering

My son's neck was very sore for 10 days afterward. Motrin helped the most. It was like magic on day 11. He was completely back to normal.

I think it happens because the hold the head a certain way to do the procedure making the muscles sore.

Hi K.,
Have you ever thought about taking your child to see a chiropractor? I ask because I've learned that in over 90 percent of cases, tubes can be avoided by removing the pressure on the eustation tubes in the ear canal. When the tubes are put in, his neck was turned and held in various unnatural positions. Relieving the pressure on his eustation tubes is done by correcting his spinal alignment, done by a chiropractor. Doing this treatment now will help him adapt to his tubes and relieve his pain by putting his neck vertebrae in the correct position. I dont want to scare you but if his neck is left untreated, he will most likely continue to have difficulty with the tubes and they will most likey be replacing them in the near future for only a tempoary fix. If you are skeptic on taking your child to a chiropractor, I completely understand! I used to call them quacks myself and after one saved my life (literally brought me back from death), I became one myself. Many people have the misconception that we are are for back pain or headaches but our work is endless. I know this would help your son feel better. My daugter is almost four, she had her first treatment at 5 hours old. It is completely safe and so good for them. Best of luck to you guys:)

I wonder if he isn't having a reaction to being put under. If it were me, I would call the surgeon or the anesthesiologist (?) and just let them know what is going on. Nothing is wrong with asking questions and that's what they get paid for. If it went on for much longer or looked like he was feeling worse, go to the emergency room.

My son had tubes put in (years ago), but I don't remember his recovery going on that long. He was a little groggy and moody for a few days, but everyone is different and your little guy might be more sensitive. Good luck!

Hi K. , When my first son had his tubes out in he did the same thing. We found out that it was because before the tubes it was like he was hearing us from under water. So after the tubes everything was much louder to him and he had to get use to that. He would put his hands on the back of his head too. It took about a month then he just stopped.I hope this helps.Dottie
