Hi B.,
The decongestant will help clear up the congestion pressuring his eustacean (sp?) tubes and the drops are basically to numb the ear drum so it's not so painful for him .I hope it clears up quickly. I know it's no fun having a sick baby. It makes you feel so helpless! :(

I've heard warm olive oil can help (don't make it hot - test it on your arm like you would after warming milk or bath water).

usually medicine like that takes about 24 hours to take full effect. if it hasn't by then you might want to take him the ped...if he has an ear infection, he might nned antibiotics to clear it up. try putting a warm moist washcloth on ear...the heat and moiture might help relive some of the presure and maybe some children's tylenol to help with pain.

Hi! I'm a pediatric nurse and this is what I've learned about the use of those meds. The decongestant is used if there is fluid behind the ear drum. It helps get rid of it so he won't develop an infection (if he hasn't already) and the drops, if they are for crankiness, are probably Auralgan drops which are pain drops. Fluid in the ears can cause pain like an infection but the decongestant should help in about 24 hours but it won't help if he has an infection also. If he's not any better I would take him to his doctor and have them check his ears. If it's just fluid he shouldn't need an antibiotic but if it's infected then he would. Also, just because it wasn't infected at the ER doesn't mean it's not now, ears can change from one day to the next. So if you don't see improvement, go to your doctor.
Good luck!
M.

B.,
My kids have had ear probs off and on. One thing that we have done that your pediatrician may not tell you about is to have him seen by a chiropractor or a cranio-sacral therapist. Manipulating the cervical spine may be all he needs to facilitate drainage. Kids often get out of whack as they are learning to move around, because they often fall. Also, they say that sometimes going through the birth canal can cause some problems with alignment, which can in turn cause problems with fluid drainage. We see an awesome guy on the South side of Indy. His name is Tony Origer. His office is called Performance Chiropractic and Sports Medicine. He has three small children and is incredibly gentle with kids. My husband is a physician and recommends Tony all the time. I also think he has a downtown office. Good luck.
