Ear Piercing for 2 and 3 Year Olds

I didn't pierce my daughter's ears like I should have when she was a baby. What kind of experience has anyone had with piercing 2 and 3 year olds ears? I'm afraid she will pick at them and they will get infected. I know you have to clean them often and stuff but I'm just worried what she will do to them. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the feedback! I think I will wait a couple of years until she can decide. I am the one that wants her ears pierced but I don't want to put her through that pain right now and she not understand why. She doesn't take shots well so I know this would be worse. Thank you, your responses helped me put things in a different perspective!

You have to do it now because I remember I got them pierced when I was 13 at the mall and it was painful. My daughter had them pierced when she was a newborn at the pediatrician's office. They numb her and then pierce. She didn't even flinch.

I am a Mom but thanks to my oldest I am now a grandmom. She married a lovely man who has three children. I took his three year old to the store and had her ear pierced. We were all unsure of how she was going to do. One thing Make sure they have two guns and can do it at one time. THen once they are done. Like any little girl she will be so proud of her new earrings she will want to show them off. Just tell her if she messes with them you will cover them with banaids and no one can see them. Just the ugly banaids. Not cute ones. It worked for my grandaughter. She only messed with them one time.

I think you made a good decision. I used to work at Claires and I actually quit because of all the littles getting their ears pierced. Most of the time the child was held down for the piercings and were screaming and fighting and crying afterwards. I was an ast manager and was told that ALL associates had to pierce so I quit.

I have 2 daughters 4 and 3. My husband would not let me peirce their ears when they were babies. He felt that it should be something they are actually able to request to do. I am SO happy we waited. We did it at Libby Lu where there were 2 people working so they could be done at the same time. My four year old did it about 6 motnhs ago. She asked for it several times so we got dressed up and went to the mall. She picked out the earings she wanted. She cried maybe 2 tears and when I told her to pick out some lip gloss she was fine. We got a lip gloss treat then went for cookies in the food court. My 3 year old had it done 3 weeks ago. Exact same routine not one tear. All she wasnted was a mirror. It was a very special mother daughter time for us. Even if the girls will not remember I will cherish the memory. It was so much fun and I am so happy I waited.

The cleaning is so easy. Just wet a q-tip till almost dripping. Drip it onto the ear front and back and twist them a little. We did not have any problems with infection at all.

An added note...I had it done when I was 8. It was way more painful and I had a headache all day. I think as you grow there is more to punch through and it hurts more. My girls were perfectly fine after 30 seconds or less. It was NOT aweful or seriously painful for them. Shots are more painful than that was. Also, mine did not mess with them at all. Not one time and so what if they do touch them. They can not really hurt anything b/c then they would be hurting themselves and most kids won't do that. At least mine didn't. They both were so proud.

I am going to let my daughter who is 5.5 decide when or if she wants her ears pierced.( I would think piercing a toddler's earlobes would be just awful for her and that she would be pulling on them.) Meanwhile I found these cute little stick on "earrings" that are basically just small very sticky stickers. There are the stickers for embellishing nails too that you stick on that she enjoys putting on her nails and her earlobes sometimes. I think your 2 year old wouldn't know they were there if you put them on while she was asleep or not paying attention. Once she finds them though, they may get picked off. You can find them with the little girl barrettes, etc. like at Target sometimes.
Best wishes.

Hi C.!!

Don´t worry I think they are still to small, of course she will feel it more and will have pain, but make sure that the earring are well desinfected, my mom is nurse and she just to do it for kids and babies so, she always tells me that she draws a spot with a pen in each ear before, to make sure they will be in a good place, so good luck!!!!

Whatever you decide, mak sure if you do take her that there are 2 people there. It is way easier when they do them at the same time. That is how I had both my daughters done. Then it is less traumatising. I know Wal-Mart and Claire's usually have 2 people to do it at the same time. Good Luck!!!

I did the same thing, so I waited until she was old enough to choose. Its not that long to wait, and then its there choice and they can help take care of them, I think its a better memory that way and why rush????/

I may have missed something. Why do it? Why not wait until she is older? At this age I would think it would be more difficult to keep up with the cleaning, the earrings, etc. And 2-3 year olds are still discovering the whole world. They have enough to think about without adding something. And lest I forget to mention some don't hit the terrible two's until they are about half way through. Mine didn't. I thought she was a little angel and then about 30 months something hit and she suddenly had an opinion about everything! LOL

When mine was younger and mentioning that I simply told her that is something she can do when she is bigger. She would forget about it after awhile.

They can't do everything their friends are doing and there should be something for them to look forward to when they get older. I did things in stages. When you are in junior high you may color your hair (big thing to jr high kids), when you are x age you may pierce your ears, when you are x age you may do a 'group date', etc. ;-)

My daughter had to have her ears re-pierced because I wouldnt' keep the earrings in her ear for that same reason. But, she actually didn't bother them at all. She was actually excited to look like a big girl with earrings. Go for it!

If she is the one that wants them done, go for it. My daughter kept talking about wanting pretty earings like the girls in her preschool class and so we ended up doing it. I just made sure that for two weeks or so I talked to her about how it would hurt for a second and we really needed to clean them often and well. This was in Feb and her ears are doing great. She turned two in Jan. Hope it goes well
