When I was a child, I could only wear 14k gold. I had horrible reactions to anything else, including stainless steel. (As an adult, I've grown out of that and can now wear any kind of earrings.) I would try gold, and see if that helps.
Hello! My 5-year-old got her ears pierced on the 12th and has been doing great. My 7-year-old got hers done on the 20th and is having some sort of reaction. It started as a small pinkish itchy rash on her cheek below her ear lobe. The rash has now gotten more red and has extended up behind her ears and it also looks as though the ear lobes are developing the same rash. I know that we'll need to remove the earrings (stainless steel) if it doesn't improve, but I wanted to check to see if anyone else has had a similar experience. She is very upset about possibly having to take them out so I really want that to be a last resort. We are currently putting cortisone cream on the rash.
Does this sound like something that might clear up without removing the earrings?
Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving!
I went out last night and bought small 14 carat studs. I cleaned the new earrings, took out the old, slid the new ones right in and then cleaned her ears. The rash definitely seems better today, but I'm still keeping a very close eye on things to make sure this will resolve the issues. Thank you for all the input!

Metal allergy!! I can only wear surgical steel or 14k gold or I get rashy, crusty, itchy earlobes :-/
It sounds like the same type of rash my cousin develops when she wears anything but gold. You should take the earrings out and consult a doctor.
She's probably allergic to the metal; you should probably take them out and get her to a dermatologist :(
This is what happens to me when I wear anything other than 14-carat gold earrings. You shouldn't have to let the holes close up, but you do have to replace the earrings with a different metal- try the 14-carat gold- and clean the area well several times a day. If the holes themselves are infected and hurt, you can use a cream like Neosporin on the posts of the earrings and around the outsides. If they aren't hurting, you can use rubbing alcohol or proxide the same way until it clears up. It shouldn't take long after you get the offending earrings away!
It might. You might also want to take her to the pediatrician to make sure she doesn't have an infection that needs further treatment. If your DD has this reaction, consider swapping the studs for gold. Many people can't wear anything but gold or silver (nickle is a common allergy).
Start with a Benadryl tablet. If the rash immediately (within a couple hours) clears up, you'll know it's an allergy to the metal. Replace it with a gold earring (if you get it wet with a little sterile water, it should slide right in).
If it doesn't clear up, you're dealing with an infection. Remove the earring, clean the area, and head to the doctor for some antibiotics.
Best of luck!
I didn't read the other replies so if I repeat anyone I'm sorry. I have the same problem and have all my life. I am allergic to anything but gold in my ears. I just wanted to suggest using maybe benadryl in some form and then get her a set of very small 14k gold hoops. Not big enough to catch on anything but enough to allow the piercing to breathe. My ears seem to do better with hoops for some reason plus it's easier to clean them.
She may be having a reaction to the metal, switch to silver
I had that problem. you may want to remove the earrings and put in gold. I can only wear real gold. i turn green and black if i wear anything else
My daughter has to wear good quality earings or she has the same reaction. No cheap ones for more than a few hours.
Yep, I agree with the other ladies about the allergic reaction, my mom and grandma have the same issue; they can only wear 14k gold.
Sounds like a metal allergy. I have that and any time I wear anything other than sterling silver or 14k gold I break out. Earrings, necklaces, rings. I sometimes also break out from jean buttons, so I put clear nailpolish on them where they contact my skin. Either totally take them out or put in 14k gold ones. Put some antibiotic on the rash. You might have to totally take them out and put some antibiotic cream on them until they're healed. I usually have to take all jewelry off my ears when I get a rash. I will even break out from the soldering on the jewelry.
Good luck!
It's an allergic reaction that can turn into infection if it hasn't already. Get 14 carot gold studs and take them with you to the doctor. She may need antibiotics - let the doc examine her, clean and treat her ears, and put in the new earrings.
Sorry this is happening. She will need to be careful of what earrings she wears.
