Hi J., I took my daughter to Claire's when she was 3ish to reward her for potty training. She picked out her favorite purple earrings and we waited our turn. When it was her turn, there were 2 teenaged girls that were the piercers. They said, "we'll go on 3. one.. two... three". Well, one went and the other hesitated, my daughter was so freaked out that she was not letting anyone come near her again! We left and she had only one ear pierced for the longest time. She was too frightened to try it again, so we finally took the sole purple earring out.
My advice would be to check with your pediatrician to see if he or she will do it. Some doctors do, they have a numbing cream they apply about 30 minutes before hand and the child won't have the pain or the horrible experience that we did. My daughter is now at the age that she could have lots of pretty earrings but she refuses to go through the trauma again!
Maybe it would be better for you to have it done at such a young age, but still, I would check with your ped.
