Ear Infections? - Mukwonago,WI

Brought my youngest daughter to on-call dr last week, diagnosed her with a double ear infection, put her on amoxicillin. On-call dr said she would not need a recheck unless she was still not feeling better. Just wondering what your experiences were with ear infections. Do they generally clear up with 10days on this medicine? Do you usually bring your children back for a recheck after they complete their meds? Have your children had frequent ear infections after a first one? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I will answer the last question. My daughter had persistent ear infections her whole first year of life, so much so that she had tubes put in. However, the infections continued! We finally got off the anti-biotic merry go round. Since you didn't ask that question I won't go into how we did that, but feel free to message me if the infections persist and you want more info.

Hi my 2 year has had quite a few ear infections but only got antibiotics a couple of times because they do and can clear on their own. I am sure the doctor would re check but it really shouldnt be nesscary, you WILL know if your child is better or not. I actually bought an otoscope for $50 and so worth it! I looked in my kids ears all the time to know what "normal" was for them and whenever they complain or have colds I check their ears and can see if it doesn't look "normal" Since I am not a doctor I don't know if it is a severe case or mild so I bring them in but no more wasted trips suspecting ear infection when their ears are clear. Huge relief. Also you can then recheck yourself! I think it was made by medical dignostics? Look online then and read reviews you can get good ones cheaper too! The ENT doctor in our neighborhood thought it was a good idea that I had one!

yes, amoxicillin may work. Each case is different.

If your child is having any signs of issues, runny nose, etc....then please have her rechecked.

You may also need to have her on an allergy med to clear up the sinuses.

Most ear infections (I think the stat is something like 75-85%) clear up on their own without antibiotics, but that if they don't clear up within 3 days or get worse then antibiotics are needed.

A single incident of ear infections doesn't mean your daughter will be more likely to have them in the future. What causes them can vary. She may have had a cold already or allergies and the fluid got into her ears and then became infected. They don't happen with every cold or sinus infection.

Anyway, the amoxicillan should work. If not you'll know within a couple of days due to your child's behavior. If her symptoms don't go away or they get worse, then take her back in. That would indicate that amoxicillan either is the wrong med or the dosage isn't strong enough or she needs to be on it longer or the infection is viral rather than bacterial (and if it's viral then an antibiotic won't work anyway).

If your daughter feels better after finishing the meds, then you shouldn't need to bring her back for a check up unless the doctor requests it. For now just let her rest, give her plenty of fluids, and let her eat when she's hungry.

My 3 yearl old daughter now had ear infections two years in a row. She was on antibiotics all the time. Amoxicillin is what our pediatrician gave her. I think it was due to her not being able to blow her nose and everything just clogged up (the tubes that connect the nose, ears, eyes and mouth). It should take effect from the moment you give her the antibiotic. But you have to be religious about giving it to her. Chances are, she'll get it again until she learns to blow her nose.
When an oncoming cold starts up with her, I wash out my daughters nose 3-4 times a day with saline solution. It clears her up. Last year my daughter also got scarlet fever twice, I'm not a doctor, but I feel almost certain that it had to do with her being clogged up. My daughter refuses to learn to blow her nose, so I continue with washing her out. Since school started she has yet to get sick. Knock on wood...
I hope your little one is o.k. Unfortunately with ear infections there is no other way to heal unless antibiotics are administered.

Between four kids, we've had quite a number of ear infections in this house. I would definitely go in for a check-up after the antibiotics are completed. I've had one child with low-level infections remaining that I didn't know about, another who needed two full courses of antibiotics for the infection to clear, and one who had a burst ear drum over the weekend after the doctor convinced me to wait until Monday. Don't feel funny about scheduling a follow-up.

When my 2 1/2 year old was 1, she got an ear infection & was given amoxicillin. Went through the whole 10 days, twice a day, and as soon as the meds were over, I could tell by the way she was acting that it was back/bothering her again. So, we went back in and they put her on augmentin instead. Wiped it out that time around. If you're concerned, I would definitely go get her re-checked at the end of the 10 days. Better safe than sorry. I was told by her current ped (we change pretty often b/c we're military) that augmentin has a tendency to work better than amoxicillin since the bugs now tend to be stronger than they were 10 years ago.

I had that problem with my daughter and found that it was from pasteurized cow's milk and wheat.

Yes you should go in for a follow up visit usually 1-2 weeks after you finish the antibiotic or sooner if she worsens. Sometimes the antibiotic will not completely take away the infection or the kids will have fluid in their ears from the infection and that needs to be monitored.
All 3 of my kids have had ear infections. My son had his first at 3 months old and has had about 8 of them. My daughter just got tubes in her ears last month because she has had 10 ear infections this year alone. Her first was at 6 months old. My baby is on antibiotics now for an ear infection. It's her second one, her first was when she was 5 weeks old.

Pasturized cow milk is a huge culprit in ear infections. Remove it and see. It makes mucus sticky and tacky, thickening it and making it much harder for the mucus to drain.

The drainage has to go somewhere. If they are having congestion in their sinus' then they will continue to have the ear infection, then comes chest infections and possibly worse.

Try treating the congestion with some actual sudafed, not the fake stuff. It will help the goo be runny and go down the throat like it is supposed to. We buy the children's liquid sudafed at a local pharmacy. Walmart and Walgreens only have what the main store says they can have and they think it has been discontinued...I even showed them my receipt and the bottle when asking them if they could order it, my regular place was out of it and I was in pain. I take about 1 tsp. for my sinus congestion. The fake stuff does nothing and makes my heart race.

Anyway, our local family owned pharmacies always carry it. It's about $2.50 per bottle. Try it and see if it helps the goo go down better instead of out their little ears.

There is usually no need for Amoxicillin. When my boys get ear infections I treat with a pain killer for the pain and a decongestant for the pressure and to clear the tubes (which is what caused the infection). It is usually cleared up in 2-3 days this way. If it does not clear up with this, than and only than would I resort to antibiotics. Antibiotics are way over used in this country and that is why they are losing their effectiveness.

Go in for a re check! I neglected to do so under the same suggestion as your doctor's and turns out it became one LOOOONG 2yr ear infection that just kept almost going away and coming back, he ended up with hearing issues, a speech delay and needing tubes and having his adnoids removed. This is a bad case, but sometimes it's ok to be paranoid!

My kids usually clear up on amoxicillin, when they are given the ear drops they don't seem to. Normally we don't do a follow-up unless we have issues. One of my sons are 6 and had his first a few weeks ago, my 7 yr old daughter got her first at 4 and had tubes put in her ears at 6 because of ear infections, my other son 4 had one around 2 with no other problems and the 15 mo old hasn't had any so far.

I don't think there is really anything that triggers them or that will prevent them... but you could always ask the doc when you go for her next check-up. Sadly, one of my kids usually get one after they have been to the doc... not sure why, but we have no issues till 2 days after the doc checks their ears.

Hope your daughter feels better soon!
