Dying of Thirst in My 2Nd Trimester

I am in my 2nd trimester of pregnancy and I can't seem to drink enough. I am getting bored of plain water. Does anyone have any liquid suggestion that don't contain caffine? Juices tend to make me more thirsty, and I am trying to stay way from iced tea.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for their suggestions with the water, I will definately try them. As far as the diabetes goes, one of my daughters is a type 1 diabetic so I tested myself with her glucose monitor and my blood sugar was fine, a bit on the low side actually. I will continue to monitor myself, but wanted to tahnk everyone for their suggestions!

I went through the same thing, and I actually used to wake up in the middle of the night with horrible cramps/contractions if I didn't drink TONS of water all day long... my doctor said it's more common than you'd think.

Anyway - it sounds silly but eating watermelon was helpful for me! It's really high in, well, WATER and it also contains Lycopene which is really good for you. (I forget why, but it's healthy!) I also used to soak lemon and orange slices in my water to make it a little more interesting, but the sad thing is that there's nothing better for you than just plain water. Hang in there.

When I was pregnant, I too was very thirsty. If you have really ice cold water, that is good. I also drank gatorade, and that comes in all different flavors. Don't worry it will pass.

I drank lots of fresh lemonade made with "Real-Lemon". I also drank the occasional non-caffine soda such as Root Beer or Orange Crush. This satisfied my craving for bubbles without the caffine.

Since it's melon season; munch on fresh fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew.

Try adding Propel Fit Powder to the water... you can buy them at the supermarket or drug store... It comes in single serve powder packets and you can add it to bottled water (or you could just buy Propel water premade, but probably more expensive). It's got 20 calories per serving, 0 grams of fat, and NO caffeine. It does have sucralose (basically, what Splenda is) so not sure if your OB has issues with that.
The other thing that I drank a lot of was Gatorade, but it has more calories.
I also like lemonade. You can either buy the powder, or just squeeze lemons and sugar into water....

J.- Have you been checked for gestational diabetes? As I had it with all 3 of my pregnancies, and now have type 2. I was constantly thirsty. I would suggest Crystal Light (which some varieties have caffeine, so read the label), flavored waters like Dasani or Fruit 2 0, and I know they make decaf teas. Good luck hon.

If you like seltzer water I would suggest that. It's just as healthy as water but it comes in lots of flavors and the carbonation gives it a little kick. Good Luck.

Hi J.,
I would mention the excessive thirst to the doctor - while you do need to maintain a high fluid intake in pregnancy, extreme thirst can be a sign of gestational diabetes.
If you don't love plain water and juice makes you thirsty, why not just add a couple of tablespoons of juice to your water for extra flavor? You can also find out what types of caffeine free herbal teas are safe for pregnancy and make an iced tea out of that.
Good luck

J.,

Has your obstetrician tested you for gestational diabetes? If not, you should request him to do so, especially if anyone in your family is diabetic, as
excessive thirst during pregnancy can be a symptom of that.
Simply testing yourself with your daughter's glucose monitor is not sufficient. Gestational diabetes sometimes requires the type of testing where blood needs to be drawn every hour, in order for it so show up, so please have the doctor test you for it!

However it could be that you are just sothirsty because the weather has been so hot and humid, and you aren't drinking enough fluids. If your diabetes testing is normal, I would try some of those carbonated water drinks that are flavored with fruit juice. They always seemed to quench my thirst much better than something with caffeine or something very sweet, and they aren't as boring as plain water! Hope this helps!

Hi J.

Have you spoken to your OB/GYN to rule out any causes for your thirst? Of course, it's summer so that could be part of the issue.

While I was pregnant I couldn't drink juice full strength so I would put a little juice in my water -- I don't care for plain water either. My favorite was cranberry juice diluted with about 75% water.

Good luck!

It's summer and you're pregnant - of course you're thirsty! With my pregnancy's (4) I was very thirsty and my OB was rather suprised at how much I drank, but diabetes was never in the picture. Skim milk, lemonade (not the powdered kind) and mint iced tea are all great. You can brew the tea with decaffeinated tea and add fresh mint leaves - a summer staple in our house.

I too was very thirsty during my 2nd trimester. I found that add lemon to my water quenched my thirst. Also, eating citrus friut like oranges and grapefuit tasted delicious and didn't make me as thirsty. This phase only lasted about a month for me and then I was fine.

When I was pregnant I flavored my water with different things. Lemon and lime slices, Cucumber slices, Oranges and Apple slices, watermelon pieces. You can try anything you like cut up. It did the trick to Quench my thirst and made it so it was not so boring!

Extreme thirst can be a sign of diabetes. Better mention this to your doctor.

I drank a ton of Gatorade in my last trimester.

When I get bored of water I usually throw a couple drops of lemon or lime in it. I've also taken the powdered drink mixes like crystal lite and added just a little to water just to give it a tiny bit of flavor.

The flavored seltzer waters are great - the unsweetened ones.

Not to alarm you, but you should check with your OB, as excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes. I had Gestational Diabetes with our 3rd...It was very easy for me, so don't worry.

Email if you wish.

Try adding a slice of lime or lemon to the water (you can also use concentrate).

Try decafinated herbal teas that come in a variety of flavors.

Reminder: Excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes. Make sure your doctor tests your blood sugar.

J.,
Get checked for gestational diabetes. Age 35 is not a magic number, it's just a guideline. Check with your doctor and OB, and get information from them too.

(And if you are anti-food coloring, you had best ask ahead of time for a drink with none, bc the garbage that they give you is opaque orange soda.)

Water. Water is best, if you can't stand it plain, flavor it with lemon or fruit juice. It took me a while to get used to it - I would take just 5 sips at a time, and worked my way up to 5 sips every time I passed the glass on the counter. I was so thirsty, and I couldn't get enough water, it seemed at times.

Good Luck,
M.

My absolute favorite drink while pregnant was 1/2 glass sparking water and 1/2 glass of lemonade. Just like fizzy soda pop but less calories/sugar. Or I would do with 1/2 juice like cranberry, white grape juice, etc...be creative!

I would even make smoothies with crushed ice. One of my favorites: lemonade with crushed ice and raspberries or strawberries. YUM!

Target sells Archer Farms flavored, unsweetened bottled water. They're pretty good.

Be sure to stay away from the artificial sweeteners - those aren't the best...

Hi J.,
May God bless you family as it grows again.
As for thirst, did you have gestational diabetes with the twins? I did with my twins. I dehydrated, and went into labor at 19 weeks because I didn't know enough to drink enough. OK so have you had that test yet. It is required here but I don't remember when. Tell your OB about your thirst, could easily be a medical issue.
God bless

Yup I am old enough to be your mom, don't discount talking to her, she probably has some fun stories she would love to share if you would love to listen. If anyone asked what I craved, my response was water! I drank (and still do) Pellegrino with a splash of juice or lemon/lime. Or try a spa trick, they toss in cucumber, too. I also make my own ice tea with decaf loose tea or bags, you can mix up the flavors without all the extra sugar.

Stay cool...

Watch out - excessive thirst is a sure sign of gestational diabetes. Stop eating all sugars and 'white' carbs - white flour, rice, etc, right now, before your next dr. visit. Also, stop all juice - it's just concentrated fruit sugar. Sorry the water is so boring, maybe milk or peppermint herbal tea (one whilch is just peppermint leaves) made into iced tea - but don't add sugar to it! Isn't it worth boring drinks for a few more months to protect your baby's safety?

Have you had your glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes yet? Being really thirsty is a symptom of diabetes. If you haven't, I would recommend calling your OB and letting her/him know about your thirst and see if they want you to get tested now.
