I live at Midway and Plano Parkway. I am looking for drum lessons for my 4 1/2 year old. He has been playing by himself for a year and is showing no signs of stopping. We bought him a starter set of drums 6 months ago and he already needs a new set. I would love to give him lessons.

Hi J.!
Since your son is already familiar with the drum set, you should try lessons. My husband teaches drum lessons and has good results from young ones. He has been teaching music for 6 years. He currently teaches at LifeSong Studio in Grapevine. Visit www.LifeSongStudio.com then call or email for more info.

Best,
K.

Hello! I'm a music educator who also has a degree in child development. I teach privately in the metroplex. What I always recommend to parents is to start their children on the piano and then add another instrument as the child grows. Piano is the basis of music and playig any instrument (that's why, in order to play in the school band these days, kids are required to have at least a year of private piano lessons). My advice would be to find a great piano teacher who specializes in tiny ones (I'd go private instead of a retail studio) and she will be able to assist you as to timing the addition of percussion well. Good luck!

Hello - I moved here from CT also (but a long time ago).

My step-daughter competed in all the drumline competitions at Plano Senior H.S. She has started to work on her Masters in Education, and may be available for those private drum lessons.

If you are interested, please e-mail me, and I will give you her contact information.

I wouldn't set him up with drum lessons yet. I'm a band director in the DFW area and the best thing that you can do for him is to sign him up for piano lessons through a suzuki program (or other private studio) and let him keep playing his drums at home. Most good band programs in the area require a minimum of 2 years of piano for a child to be considered for the beginning percussion class in middle school. I'm not sure of anyone that teaches pre-school students percussion lessons, because they just can't grasp the technique or the need to practice.
Hope that helps!
