Drug Free Pediatric Dentristry?

I recently took my 4 yr old son for his dental checkup and cleaning. He was perfectly fine, never squirmed and didn't panic, very patient. He actually enjoyed that horrible vacuum they put in your mouth to suck out liquid- yuck.
It turns out he needs to get 2 fillings in the back. Fine. However, the dentist said he only works on children after they come in early for a "fruit cocktail"- 3 drugs including DEMEROL, VALIUM and like a Benedryl. I'm like, "you have to be kidding". They still give them a pain blocker on top of that. This seems like overkill.
Anyway, does anyone know a pediatric dentist who is drug free? Or at least willing to consider just a pain killer? I could see if the child was hysterical and afraid, but my son is neither.
Thanks.

What can I do next?

Unfortunetly my son is 4 and has had 7 teeth filled, he has really bad teeth for some reason. Anyways before they numbed his mouth we opted for them to give him some laughing gas. He was perfectly fine, and if you read up about laughing gas there really are no side affects. Hope this helps. He was given No drugs at all.

My 3-yr-old just had 3 fillings done at Dr. Rawlings office in Encinitas, CA ###-###-####. Dr. Crystal actually was the dentist who did the work. She was amazing!!! No extra durgs required--only the pain blocker was used & they weighed him prior to starting to ensure that they used just the right amount of that!

Kid friendly & super good work! Several of my playgroup friends have also had good success with this ped. office.

Good Luck!!

For future use, consider Lifewave pain patches. No drugs or chemicals. I just had a root canal and when the novacain wore off I was in pain. I put the patches on my cheek and was out of pain in 10 seconds!!! They work on all other pain issues as well. Go to Lifewave.com/kherihealth for more info.

Hi there,

We just finished getting a filling filled. We use Dr. Scoma. He is willing to do it without Nitris (sp?), or the drink, or you can use only one or all or none. He has done a great job and is nice to work with. He's in the Scripps Ranch area.

Hi A.,

My dentist isn't a pediatric dentist, but I believe he takes young patients because his office is decorated for childrent. He is a very very patient and good man. I believe they do the "sand blasting" type of fillings that don't need any meds. I've had that done before in Michigan and it is GREAT! You don't feel anything because it only takes away the decayed part of the tooth unlike old style drilling that takes out a lot of your tooth. Try calling him to find out if he does that. His name is Dr. Meyerson and he is in Mira Mesa near I-15. ###-###-####. My girls go to a pediatric dentist but haven't had any fillings yet. So, I'm just not sure if they do the "sand blasting" style or not. But you could check with them. www.captainfloss.com ###-###-####. He is in Carlsbad.

I know of an amazing holistic dentist in San Diego. I have not taken my children yet but I am almost positive that he sees children as well. Here is his website:

Hi there,
Your post doesn't indicate where you are located so a specific recommendation won't work but have you looked into a regular dentist as opposed to a peds dentist? There are lots of
"regular" dentists out there who also work on children and have books, toys, etc. in their office with great bedside manners. They do not typically have the eqpt that peds do for cocktails, etc. so they do it the old fashioned way by numbing the area, giving a shot and doing the work quickly. It's worth looking into if you do not need the drugs...
Good luck,
-K.
