Driving Hwy 77 (From Waco to Corpus)

Has anyone taken this route before? We love driving through the country rather than taking the main highways. Looking at the Texas map Hwy 77 looks like a shorter distance than driving Hwy 35 (since we're not driving through two major cities (Austin & San Antonio). Let me know if you've taken this route before & the pro's/con's.
Thank you so much for your help!!

So What Happened?

We took the Hwy 77 route from Waco to Port Aransas & it was a much better drive than taking Hwy 35. Plus it was a shorter drive!

Hi K.,

We took Hwy 77 this past Thanksgiving from Waco to Corpus. It's the only way we get there these days. It's a beautiful drive and much quicker than 35. We love it!

I would ALWAYS rather drive 77 than 35. I went to school in Waco and drove that route many times when going home to the CC area. I still try to avoid Austin whenever possible! There are quite a few small towns that slow you down, but that also means there are a lot of options for pit stops. And the countryside makes for a nice view. In Hallettsville you can make a choice to go through Victoria or Cuero/Goliad...I always went through Goliad. If you're into TX history, there is a mission you can see in Goliad. Either route will put you through Refugio and then on to CC.

We used to go to Port Aransas all the time (right outside Corpus, I highly reccommend it!) We've taken this route before. It's not a bad drive and it beats the construction through Austin. My husband still prefers 35, but I liked this route. Lots of small towns which means slower speeds, but still a nice drive.

I live in Corpus Christi, I have 2 daughters that live in Dallas. I picked this route because I have an IMMENSE aversion to #1= the speed limits on I 35 ; #2= having to navigate through San Antonio's hwy construction ; #4 the sheer enorminity of the number of cars on I 35. But I had to get to Dallas for my grandsons birth, so I take hwy 77 north from Victoria, all the way to Waco and Circle Road. THE ABSOLUTE MOST RELAXING DRIVE EVER. The hwy is much better maintained than I 35. No traffic jam, you hardly ever see another car. The speed limit is 70 in most places. Except in towns, but that just means that "YOU" get the opportunity to drive without stress and to see some of the sights!
OH, La Grange and the Colorado River drive through the mountains, is so AWESOME!
HAPPY MOTORING!!!

My parents live in Rockport and we experiment different ways to go down there all the time. 77 is nice and scenic. Don't speed through the small towns though. La grange and places like that, cops galore. It is a little bit shorter though in time and miles. (than 35)
