Hi Moms,

I have a 13 mnth old boy that I am still breastfeeding. He is down to about 5 feedings within a 24 hr period and I'm wondering if it's safe to start drinking coffee? I have not touched coffee since finding out I was pregnant and I'm just not sure if it's completely safe even though he has cut back on his nursing. I do NOT drink any other caffeine beverages so coffee in the mornings would be the only one of the day. Any advice and does anyone else drink coffee while still nursing?

TIA for any helpful advice.

What can I do next?

I drink one or two cups a day, and have since my daughter was four months old...she is now eleven months old and is fine.

Yes, my lactation consultant told me it was fine to start back with the coffee while still nursing. She told me that it was suggested to only have 2 cups a day, but if I was going to actually have the 2 then to drink one in the morning and one later in the day. That's what I've done and my daughter is perfectly healthy. She is only bf and have had no issues with the coffee I drink. I'm sure with 3 energetic kids cup of coffee would be great... go for it. It's fine!

Different babies respond to caffeine differently. Some are extremely sensitive to it, and others it doesn't bother in the slightest. I say try a cup and see how your son reacts. If you don't notice any reaction, then you're fine to drink caffeinated beverages (in moderation, of course) anytime you want. I drank diet coke while nursing both of my kids, and neither was sensitive to caffeine, so we had no problems even if I drank one at night. It just depends on the baby.

Even while pregnant, most doctors will say a cup of coffee a day will not do anything to the baby. Same with tea. I drank iced tea the whole time and it didn't have any affect on my five kids. It's the first three months of pregnancy that are the times to be extra cautious.

I drank coffee while breastfeeding both my kids. Obviously, I would limit it to no more than two cups a day. If you are not drinking anything else with caffeine or chocolate, then all is well. All the bad stuff is filtered out by the time it hits babies mouth anyway. Unless you do anything in excess. Good luck!
