I am at my wits end! A kid at daycare ended up with it 2 weeks ago and then I got it and had an allergic reaction to the medicine so I suffered a week with no relief. Our daughter barely got it, son has been fine. DH got it, because I couldn't take medicine it came back and now I'm 1 day away from finishing the medicine and our daughter has it all over again! We have been super careful and clean. I've been changing my pillow case every day and not reusing towels or anything. It is the plague and I want it out of my house. I feel like I need to throw everything away. disinfecting them only works so far and not everything can be washed in the washer or dishwasher. What do I do? Throw out their favorite books?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

I do want to add one thing, their daycare is super clean and illnesses usually don't go around. In 1 1/2 years the kids have only had minor colds, no flu or anything to keep them out of daycare.

What can I do next?

A teacher at my son's preschool swears by washing her eyes with Johnson's "no tears" baby shampoo. She says she's treated her whole family's pink eye episodes in this way.

Also, disinfecting wipes on anything that can't be washed, and I'd just paper towels for hand-drying until this clears up. Or individual towels for drying hands.

Its the scourge of daycare as far as I am concerned..and I am a provider. Many Dr's (here anyway) tell parents in the last few years...no meds needed, blah blah. Well I have my own rules, based on my 14 years in group setting home daycare. Meds AND no goop, or keep them home. Its the only way I can keep it contained. That and a wish and prayer that all of the disinfecting, bleaching, etc works. I Lysol every doorknob after people enter and leave my home...inner doorknobs after kids go in and out of bathrooms, etc..wipe down sinks knobs and flushers...I go maniac on it as I have had it go around and around for months before.

I have been told that dogs get it alot (consider how they scratch their eyes..we pet them on their faces, etc) and we can spread it back and forth...so not sure if you have a pet? but its a source as well that many don't consider.

Just keep what you are doing...wipe down and Lysol and wash (HOT water, soap, bleach if needed) any and all surfaces you touch. Remote controls, keys, your toothbrush handle...the drawer pulls, doorknobs, your phones, I even do the little plastic pulls on the window blinds! The banisters (my daycare kids touch them down low to walk up and down the steps, so a different perspective as well if young children). Its an exhaustive list, but sometimes really necessary if its getting out of hand like you are describing. I have been there...

Best of luck to you!!!

My 3 yr old twins have it right now so I feel your pain. I have been spraying metal surfaces with Windex and Clorox Anywhere. It's hard to keep toddlers from rubbing their eyes, but I tell them to grab a tissue if their eyes are itchy and help them wash their hands. I read in a medical journal to let as much sunlight in your house with windows open because the sun's heat can breakdown the bacteria ( I don't know how long that takes, but I guess depending on how hot it is). Do you clean the eye from the inside out? Doctor told me to be sure to do that. Also, bacteria likes warm wet surfaces so our bathroom has to stay dry and disinfected every time my boys go in there. I am willing to try anything so let me know if you have any new ideas as well. I hope I helped some. I pray we both are free from this real soon!

Can you put lots of toys away in a closet and limit what they are exposed to? That might help.

Don't toss your stuff - it's a waste. Just keep being careful.

And feel better. So sorry for all this.

OMG, I feel your pain!! My entire family just got over pink eye (I am still putting drops into my eyes) and we are all dealing with some kind of viral or bacterial infection. Some of us are on antibiotics, some are not. Argghh, I feel like our home is a petri dish! Just when one family member gets better, another one gets hit with something else. I am doing everything possible over here to keep from spreading germs, short of wearing rubber gloves around the house!

I would suggest using Clorox wipes on everything and Lysol your home whenever possible. Be sure to wipe every surface, such as phones, door knobs, computer, remotes, etc......pretty much scrub your house down!

Good luck to you!!!! I, too, am sooo sick of being sick!!

It stings so I am not sure how you might do it with kids but diluted apple cider vinegar (braggs brand is best) will get rid of it in like 24 hours or less.

everyone needs to keep their fingers out of their eyes for a while. Wipe down everything y'all touch, toothbrushes, cabinet and drawer knobs. The germ must be in there somewhere for it to continue reoccurring after a round of antibiotics.

Hi S.,

Some people swear by putting a warm tea bag on the eye as a compress. That does help but a melaleuca alternafolia tea bag can be used as it has anti bacterial and anti fungal qualities. It will also bring the swelling down. Continue to wash everything.

Regular immune boosters will keep things like that at bay as well as help them heal faster. Elderberry extract, detoxing your home, regular chiropractic care are among those things that help. I'll be glad to give you more specifics if you want to go that route.

God bless,

M.
