Dr. Brown's Bottles and First Cups

My eight month old is so ready to hold his bottle by himself; however, he uses the wide-mouth Dr. Brown's and they are just too bulky for him to hold and tip up to get the milk. He ends up being unsuccessful and frustrated. I'd like him to be able to do this, especially when we go out. He's having the same problem with the Avent cups...does anyone have a suggestion as to how to help him? Has anyone had this problem, too? What were your solutions? My daughter took right to the cup and she used Playtex nursers that she didn't need to tip, so this is new territory for me!! Thanks!

So What Happened?

I ended up using the Dr. Brown's four ouncers first. They were easier for him to hold, and as he got bigger, he got better at holding the eight ouncers. Now, he'd prefer to use his big sister's huge sippy cups!
Thanks everyone!!

Hi J.,
my son is only 5 months but he is already holding his bottle. I got a free Gurber bottle of 5 oz's and he loved it. It is the new shaped one with 3 corners and it's wide necked. When he increased his consumption of food I went to the local Rit Aid and found the 9 oz bottle. Now he loves to hold the bottle with his hands b/c the corners are so small that his hands fit around them. They evne got the sippy cups, give it a try they are easy to wash and baby friendly. It worked out for my little on.
Good luck,
A. R.

Something you can try is moving to sippy cups. At Walmart you can purchase Nubby cups which will be very similar to the Dr Browns ones. My son used the Dr Browns, normal size and took to the Nubby cups pretty well. They have handles and a latex top so they are more like bottles than other sippy cups.

Avnet has plastic "handles" that fit on their bottles, and are easier for babies to hold. My son held those with no problem.
I think they would fit on a Dr. Brown's as well, but I haven't tried that, so I can't promise anything...

I don't know about the Dr Brown's but the Avent bottles have handles you can buy for them. My son had a hard time at first but once I put the handles on it seemed very easy to him and he was able to hold his own bottles until he was older and then he could do it with or without the handles.
