Down Syndrome - Chicago,IL

Has anyone had a neck measure of 3.9 at almost 12 weeks but found everything to be okay? I know what the risks are and they said that the triple screen would most likely come back abnormal so it was not done.

A CVS is scheduled to hopefully find nothing is wrong. But the problem is that there is a genetic problem that would make the child suffer greatly all his life if DS and this problem. Much higher risk and issues for hemorrage (sp?) and other internal bleeding.

What can I do next?

I have to admit that I REALLY hate these new waves of tests and ultrasounds they do these days. They put parents in a panic over nothing. Chances are your baby is going to be just fine. But, even if he/she is + for DS, you're going to be blessed more than you'll ever imagine. DS children are some of the sweetest and most loving children on this planet. Yes, things will be tough on you, but your blessings will outweigh everything else.

Hi - they didn't give me a neck measurement but did give me results from the screen and blood work of 1:54 for Down Syndrome. My doctor was more concerned because the number was so much higher than in my first pregnancy and said it was a bit of a drastic change. This baby turns 2 in June and was not born with any genetic issues whatsoever...no DS or anything else. I actually did opt for a CVS though and it put me at peace...I'm a worrier and would have obsessed the entire pregnancy had I not found out. Especially since at her 20 week ultrasound they found that she had a single umbilical artery, one of the 10 markers they look for in the genetic abnormality checklist. Since we had the CVS done around 12 weeks, I knew she was genetically fine...saved me a lot of worry.

Even if the baby is DS, its not the worst thing in the world. My step dtr is moderate retarded and her best friend is DS. They are precious just the way they are although I do have to admit they are full time jobs. Best wishes to you!!!

I understand exactly where you are coming from right now. With my last pregnancy our neck measurement was off the chart, can't remember the number, and I was totally panicked. I was basically told all the worst possibilities by the specialist and felt even worse when we left the appointment. I went ahead and had the amnio done at 15 weeks and was relieved to find there was nothing wrong, all chromosomes were normal and the ultra sound looked good, nose bone and all facial measurements were perfect. When my little girl was born she had a really chubby neck :-) My Dr. told me that there was research being done between large babies and the neck measurements being high, not sure where that research is now, this was almost 4 years ago. She is a perfectly healthy and happy little girl. Hope all goes well for you!!!

I don't remember what my kids' neck measurements were ,but my quad screen came back 1 in 80 chances of Down's for my daughter. She is 2 now and perfectly healthy, happy and smart. Try not to be too concerned about this. Many quad screens come back questionable and babies turn out just fine all.the.time. :-)
Also when you have your ultrasounds done, specifically ask about the nose bone on your child. If they can see it then that is a tell-tale sign that the baby doesn't have Downs. Hope this helps!
God Bless,

i have to say im worrying as well about this now. I was 13 weeks and went in for a ultrasound but not for the screening and they checked everything and said the babys neck looked a little thick but they did not get a measurement. I went for a level 2 ultrasound at 15weeks and they got a measurement of 3.5mm but they said they cant really use it since its not with in the 11-14 weeks. But at 18 weeks i went for another one for the anatomy scan and they had a measurement of 3.5mm again and also noticed 2 small choroid plexus cysts in the brain but my doctor said not to worry about those since they usually disappear. The heart and all other organs all looked good. So she went ahead and had me do the quad blood screen and i got my result and it came back normal. So that made me feel so much better and im waiting to hear from my doctor so she can tell me my risk which im 22. But she really doesnt think i have anything to worry about. Did they find a nasal bone in the ultrasound? they found one on mine at the 13 week ultrasound which made me feel better as well.

I had the exact same thing happen, I can't remember what my numbers were exactly, I think 3.4 or 3.5 but high enough that it was outside of the normal range. We originally were going to do a CVS as well, but then opted to wait a couple more weeks and do an Amnio, since that could test for more than the CVS, and I think the risk might be a little less The doctor was fabulous and then amnio wasn't painful at all. We got a rapid screen done with the amnio, which means you get some preliminary results back within a few days, and then the rest of the results later, but everything turned out great, no Downs, or any other genetic abnormality and I have a happy helathy almost 2 year old. I know this can be frightening, but remember the chance that there is nothing wrong is much greater than the chance that there is, and my thought was I'd rather know ahead of time, so I could prepare if we had a child who needed some extra care.
