Double Stroller - Sudbury, MA

Does anyone have any recommendations for a double stroller for a 14 month old and newborn? For our first, we have had a Graco Snugride carseat with the Graco stroller frame and loved it. We are leaning towards a Graco Duolite, mostly because it is one of the few tandems out there that will accommodate a toddler and a Snugride carseat. I have also seen the double stroller by Phil and Ted's, which I really like, though it doesn't accommodate the carseat and it is very pricey. I am looking for something lightweight (relatively), and simple. Any suggestions/experiences would be appreciated,
thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I think we are going to go with the Graco DuoGlider, at least for now. Those of you who have it seem to like it, and Toddler Bargains gives it a top pick, in spite of it being heavy. We don't actually use the stroller all that much (I rarely step foot in a mall), just for errands. We do a lot of hiking or xcountry skiing with the Bjorn or the Kelty Backpack (which we LOVE), and I have a Kelty Jogger already. So, for now will go with the DuoGlider, and if we end up using it more when the second is a little older, may opt for one of the other recommended models (phil and ted's or maclaren or...).
Thanks so much again for all the helpful input!!
best,
Kim

I've heard that the "joovi" is a great one. I have a friend who got one because her 2 children were 20 mos. apart and she absolutely recommends it. She says it's great because the older child can either sit or stand up and still be contained PLUS, she said it's reletively inexpensive. Good luck.

We have the Phil & Ted's stroller and love it. Although it doesn't accomodate a car seat, it does have a full reclined part for the newborn. My son (2 1/2 years) and daughter (16 weeks) love it.

The price scared us at first, but then we realized it's like buying 2 strollers anyway. We didn't want tandem because we heard it's tough to maneuver and we didn't want side-by-side because we heard it's tough to get through stores with something so wide. We're extremely happy with it.

Good luck!

Highly recommend the sit and stand- easy to use and lasts a long time- yard sales often have them for about $20. Great deal!

I think your on the right path, you need something to accomodate the car seat. The one I have is a Jo-vee but the 2nd seat is for a child that is walking and you can strap in, not very practical if your toddler wants to run. I think your best bet is what you are looking at .. unfortuneately they are all heavy -- get your muscles ready!

I have used the Graco Duolite- it is heavy and a bit hard to maneuver but works with the car seat and also both seats recline so my two older kids have both slept in it at times. I think the side by side doubles are easier to push around but mine fits better through doors, store aisles, etc.. I always see these at consignment shops, you may want to check some out before you buy. Good luck!

K.,
I have an almost 3 year old and a 1 year old. (My 1 year old was born 3 mo premature otherwise they would have been 2 years to the day apart).

I have the Graco duolite stroller and LOVE it. I have the deluxe model and snap in a snugride car seat in one spot and my toddler in the other.

The only problem(s)... even though it is light it is large (all double strollers are though!) so it takes up most of our trunk space. The other is that with the carseat in the back (the heavier infant has to be in the front) the storage basket is not as easy to access as when the infant is in the seat without being in the car seat. Occassionally we have to jiggle the seat a little to get the car seat to unlatch, but it is occassional.

I am a VERY tiny woman and having a stroller that is very easy to manuever in a very large city (Montreal) has been great. The stroller works well in malls, elevators, even for nice long walks with my husband (our sidewalks are not very well groomed and we've even gone "off road" with it!).

We are very very pleased with our stroller. I use it almost daily since we have a ton of Dr's appts to go to, and I'm not sure how I would do it without such a great stroller. It keeps my toddler contained and allows easy access to my baby when I need to get her in and out. Also since she was premature it gave her the adequate support she needed until she got to a more healthy weight.

I wish you all the best!

I have twins and I own the peg perego aria double stroller. I love it. The only downside for me is it does not accommodate both carseat carriers. HOWEVER, it is VERY lightweight, both seats are next to each other, not front to back, and it does accommodate one Graco snugride carseat (perfect for your little one on the way!) It's so lightweight and durable. It fits through a standard doorway, I have never not been able to fit through a door with it. I love the fact it's side to side because I personally felt bad putting one child in the back and one in the front. The one in the back really doesn't get to see that much. For me, that was a preference. It has lots of nice features, too. You should definitely check it out if you think it fits your needs...

We have been looking at the B.O.B. Revolution duallie. We are expecting twins but it may work for you as well. You can buy a car seat/toddler tray attachment piece that will accomodate 1 infant car seat. We found it pretty easy to fold and steer. It is expensive, and never really seems to go on sale!

Congratulations on your pending arrival of your new baby! My children are 19 mos apart, and I found that the Graco Duolite worked best to accommodate the Snugride and still give my toddler the view she was used to from the front of the stroller. The only thing is, it is a little heavy and somewhat big (I refer to it as my Caddy) :) However, it will definitely last for as long as you want it. We are now in the process of looking for a side-by-side stroller for convenience and its lightweight, as my son has outgrown the Snugride. I still use my Gracolite if I am going to be out all day (ie; park, etc) with the kids b/c the undercarriage is so large to fit everything.

Good luck with your purchase and your birth!

I have McLaren double side by side and love it but it doesn't hold the car seat. Had first purchased the Phil and Ted and did not like it. It was pretty heavy, not easy to fold and my 2 year old hated sitting in the seat underneath and I wasn't comfortable putting my 9 mo. old down below. Also fabric ripped at folds after 3 weeks of normal use. I returned it.

I've also used the graco duel glider with my two older children. Liked it a lot. Great storage space and pretty easy to steer when they are younger. Good luck!

I have the phil & teds and LOVE it. I actually have twins so it is a different situation than yours but several of my friends use it with their toddler and baby and love it as well. It's incredibly versatile. You can set it up so that your newborn is laying down in a covered section in the back... it's hard to explain but it's awesome because your baby can sleep and no one touches or bothers your baby. Also, no one will tell you this at the stores, but you really can use your car seat with it. There is an attachment you can buy (which is really just a strap to tie it down onto the front bar). Several of my friends used it with their car seats some with and some without the attachment.

I know it's incredibly expensive, but I find it worth every penny. It's light, it's slim so I don't feel like I'm pushing a monster stroller, and it's easy to steer with one hand. When my twins were young my then 2 year old could easily switch between walking or riding and it wasn't a huge issue to either have an empty seat or to switch babies in and out. AND I can push it one handed which ends up being huge to me. It's also a great ride on the bumpy streets and sidewalks.

I really LOVE this stroller. It's the only double stroller I would ever buy!

Best of luck!
E.

I purchased a Joovy Caboose when my kids were a bit older; my daughter could sit up, so I didn't use the car seat attachment. I did love this stroller, though! It has a smaller footprint than a true double stroller and was great if we went somewhere that involved a lot of walking. My kids are 3 years apart, so my son would want to walk for the most part, but if he tired near the end, he could hop onto the seat in the back.

Congrats on baby girl. I just a posted this on another thread. Here's my opinion:

After researching and looking at the pros/cons, I recently purchased a Phil and Ted, and I love it. I wish I had more knowledge of strollers before I registered for my Travel System, which has been retired.

I am currently using the P&T as a single, but if/when we decide to have #2, I would just purchase the doubles kit for it. It truly rides really nice and DD is very comfortable in it. It is not a "jogging" stroller, but can be for light jogging. This is neither a side-by-side or a front-and-back, it's more like a top-and-bottom.

When used as a double, it is as wide as a single. The only "bad" thing I can say about it, is the fact that there is no tray for DD, so I will be purchasing an "add-on" feature for her.

I believe there is an "add-on" feature you can buy to accommodate your infant seat.

I struggled over the same decision.... When our second was born we bought the Mountain Buggy Urban Double. It has been perfect and we love it. You can either put the newborn directly in the stroller (sides fold flat) or buy an attachment to use with the carseat. I put them in side by side and my oldest daughter also loves to be right next to her sister! Highly recommend...

We use a Valco Double stroller. It was quite expensive, but the best money on baby items I ever spent! My children were newborn and 17 months when we purchased it. It is a side by side jogger that fits through any standard door. We justified the cost by acknowleding that we were only buying one stroller. Many of my friends with children of similar ages were buying a double jogger and a lightweight stroller such as a Maclaren. The Valco has a carseat clip to accomodate an infant car seat. It even has a third seat attachment if you are thinking of ever having a third child! We walk in rugged terrain daily so I was adamant that we purchase a jogger, but I take it to the mall fairly frequently and do just fine. Not sure where you are located, but if possible check out the store Magic Beans, mbeans.com. They have a stroller matching feature on thier website and fantastic employees if you can make it to the store. They let me push my children around in several different strollers outside to help me make my purchase. Good Luck!!

We have a 17 month old and a 2 month old. We bought a Phil & Ted's double stroller and love it. The carseat can fit in the regular seat and the older child can sit in the seat below. Its not ideal for the older child but ours does not seem to mind. She would rather be out of the stroller anyway, wandering around. The Phil & Ted's is lighter than most double strollers and is very easy to manuver. Also its not as wide which helps navigate in tight spaces. Good luck!

We opted for the Phil & Ted's. We have a 3 yr old and a 1 yr old and absolutely love the jogger. Yes it's pricey, but it is totally worth it. It handles really well on streets and sidewalks as well as while shopping or over grass.

With different age kids, the tandem vs side-by-side is probably the way to go. Otherwise the kids steal toys and hit each other too much, from what I hear. The sit and stand models wouldn't fit in our trunk, and that's the only reason we didn't get one of those.

The Phil&Ted's collapses pretty well and isn't particularly heavy. The second kid's seat comes off entirely and that works well for storage and lifting.

Good luck! Christy Y

I splurged and got the Phil & Ted's for my newborn and 21-month-old. I really love it, it's so easy to push two kids in and maneuvers really well. If you want to walk a lot, I think it's worth the money, otherwise the I've heard good things about the Graco Duolite althought I haven't used it myself. The Phil & Ted's is sort of a pain to fold and unfold, so if you're looking to use it mainly in stores, the Graco might be better. Another one to look into is the Maclaren twin techno - it's lightweight and folds compactly. It's only drawback is that it's side-by-side, but it's from the UK and so designed to fit through standard doors (stores and homes are small in the UK so they make everything as compact as possible). Here's a site with more info on it:
http://store.babycenter.com/product/strollers/double+stro...
Advantages of the Maclaren over the Phil & Ted's: cheaper but high quality, both seats recline, comes with all the extras (rain canopy, foot muffs, dual baskets so tons of storage space (you lose the storage space when you have both kids in the Phil & Ted's, probably the most compact fold available in a twin stroller.
Advantage of Phil & Ted's over Maclaren: slightly narrower (but longer which has it's own maneuvering problems), bigger wheels are better for rough terrain.
Hope this helps! I'm sort of obsessed with strollers, as you may be able to tell... In a perfect world I would own both the Phil & Ted's and the Maclaren Techno twin, but that's more than i can spend on strollers. I think the Phil & Ted's was great for me because my older daughter is big enough to walk in stores; if my kids were as close together as yours I would have gone with the Maclaren Techno twin - but I think the Graco could be a good solution too, I'm just not as familiar with it. I used to live in the UK, and over there everyone seems to use the Maclaren or the Phil & Ted's, although the Graco is available. The Maclaren makes a cheaper stroller called the twin triumph that costs less and is 4 lbs lighter, but I'm not sure the seats recline completely flat, which you might want for a newborn. They do recline, just not all the way.

My son was 14 months old when my daughter was born and I was in the same situation. I got the Graco since that is what I had for the car seat/carrier as well. It worked out great. It's a little heavy but folds easily and glides effortlessly even with 2 kids and a carrier .. LOL. I think that's your best bet unless you want to buy a different car seat.

Hi! My first two boys are 14 months apart and I loved my Duoglider. It is a bit heavy, but worth it. My oldest did not walk really well yet, and this gave me the opportunity to have him buckled in sitting. It is great for going for errands, to the gym etc. I also use (and abused) a double jogger for hikes and such.

I am actually in your same boat. I have a 15 month boy and a 4 month old girl. I had the snugride car seat and stroller myself and went with the Graco duoglide stroller. I have to say I do like it. It's not that light weight but I do like the stroller for what it provides me. I personally do not like the side by sides. But I find that it does manuver very well in stores and anywhere else I need to go. It holds all my stuff also! And I pack for an army when we're just going to the mall or store.

Hope this helps....

Carseat compatible doubles are tough... I recommend to my customers that they don't concentrate on carseat compatiblity with a double... because most only use that infant bucket for 6 months-1 year... but generally use the stroller for 4+ years...

A GREAT newborn compatible double stroller is the Baby Jogger City Series Mini Double - it's light weight, has a full recline, great hood coverage, you can get a double belly bar for across it and add soft trays for sippys/snacks, you can add a parent console to it... and it pushes like a dream.

They are $349 - but if you check my ad, you'll see a little discount coupon.

Hi,
We are also shopping for a double stroller and I have had several friends steer me away from the phil and teds. From what I have been told it is great at the beginning but when the second child gets larger and must sit in the bottom seat the stroller gets harder to push. In addition, the bottom seat has a weight rating of up to 30 lbs but has been known to rip away from the frame with regular use with a child less than 30 lbs. We currently have the BOB revolution single and are leaning toward the double version. It is also expensive but our daughter LOVES it (very cozy seating) and it is very easy to fold and use. We bought a carseat adapter for the infant seat (also a graco snug ride) and could use it again. Good luck with your new arrival.

I am a mother of three, 6-4-2, and I am a HUGE Grago supporter. I would recommend any of the double strollers from Graco simply because they are lightweight, durable, easy to open and close but most of all....their customer service is AWESOME! We had problems with the single stroller and they replaced parts for free. Also, we had a problem with the double stroller and whrn the part we needed was no longer available, they replaced the entire stroller free of charge! And they paid the shipping to return the broken one! Good luck and congratulations!

If I were you, I would keep your single stroller for your toddler and sling the baby, until the baby is old enough to sit up. We had a Peg Pergeo Twin Aria for our babies (15 months apart) and that worked REALLY well.

It's not that great for a baby's spine to be constantly resting in an infant car seat :)

The Twin Aria is super lightweight, side by side and much more manageable than the front to back ones, and fits in tight storage spaces/trunks, very nicely. I love mine!

For what it's worth, my sister-in-law bought the double stroller by Phil and Ted where one kiddo sort-of sits underneath, and the other in front. It has worked beautifully for her and she finds it very easy to maneuver compared to some of the other double stroller varieties. At first she bought a stroller where the older kiddo can sit or stand in the back ... that didn't work well for her at all. Anyway, she's very happy, just thought I'd pass it along. Good luck.
