Double Ear Infection - Not Wanting to Eat/drink

Hi All. My son has a double ear infection and he does not want to eat or drink. We have been forcing juice/milk/Gatorade down him with a medicine syringe just to get fluids in him. The doctor said to keep doing what we are doing and he will come around after 48 hours of being on his meds. Any suggestions on what I can get him to eat/drink that he won't fight us on? I feel bad holding him down every hour to pump fluids in him. I am at a loss at what to try.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. We actually go him to drink gatorade (we tried 7-up, Sprite, OJ) after trying so many other things, so we let him drink that for a day. Once he got two doses of medicine in him, he started to want to eat a little. By Sunday, he was 80% himself. Thanks again!

Poor little guy. You might try ice pops if he will eat them. Or, if he likes to get messy, try letting him "eat" the liquid like soup with a spoon out of a bowl. Go to the store to buy him a special "get better" cup or something that will appeal to him. Good luck!

Absolutely continue what you are doing if it will get liquids in him. I used to do the same thing using ginger ale. Ooange juice is excellent for rehydration.
I agree - no milk. It causes mucous. I'd avoid gateroade too . Read the ingredients - it's bad stuff......try plain old orange juice - much healthier.

I set the timer and would give my children 2-3 medicien droppers every 5-10 minutes for a day or so. The one time I didn't, my daughter was 5, she almost died. She ended up in the hospital with a bladder infection because she hadn't had enough liquic to kepp things moving. So set that timer and give him orange juice (regular not concentrate) - maybe even diluted with water 50/50. They are little and their bodies need the fluids. Watermelon also has a lot of liquid in it and no preservatives or other additives, food coloring, etc. Bananas that are smashed with a fork go down well, too and are a great food.

God luck and watch him closely.

We would always give my daughter the Pedialite Popsicles, she loved them! She has double ear infections all the time and would refuse to eat and drink. The popsicles worked great, and applesauce was always something she enjoys. Good luck

I wouldn't be surprised if it hurts his ears when he swallows.

At least stop giving him milk (and preferrably all milk products). It's been cited as the number one cause of ear infections in children. You don't have anything to lose by stopping it for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't stop getting ear infections if you stop using it as long as you can. I had so many ear infections as a child that I have scar tissues in my ears from it. I researched it a great deal, hoping to avoid it with my daughter. She's five and has had two ear infections her whole life, and both because of either the flu or a cold. Only two!

Worried about calcium? Try to get him to eat as many green veggies as possible. The dark green ones are typically higher in calcium and other nutrients than milk and allow you to absorb calcium better than milk does.

You can also put hot water on a washrag, wring it out, and place it up to his ear (not while it's too hot, of course). The warmth will help with the circulation. Some people use a warm blow dryer on a low setting. I like the washrag idea better.

I think the main thing is to focus on trying to reduce the pain in his ears. I bet he'd drink and eat if that got better.

Good luck.

Have you tried popsicles of any kind, jello, sprite or 7 up or any soda without caffein is usually a big deal for my kids as a treat so that has worked some.I hope these are helpful. I have 2 boys and they both have had rough time with ear infections and the one had roto virus and got dehydrated and was in the hospital for 4 days so do whatever it take to keep him hydrated.
Ill keep you in my prayers, its tough having a sick baby!
God Bless,
D.

Don't worry about sugar drinks. The sugar might actually give him a little energy and help with his electrolytes. Anything that you can think of that he might like, that you normally would say no to, usually entices them too. The main thing is to get ANY fluids down him.
Good luck.

This will sound odd, but the pediatrician my mom took me to when I was a child suggested Jello water. Basically you take a packet of Jello and mix it with water. It tastes great, and will get the much needed water into your child!

Hi, A.!
My mom used to make up Jell-O with just *hot* water (2 Cups of hot water to dissolve the powder, instead of 1 C hot and 1 C cold). Then after it cooled off a little, we just drank it. When you mix it that way, it does not "set". If you're worried about giving him too much sugar, try the sugar-free formula. Jell-O is great to give kids because it also has protein in it, although not enough to make it a single protein source in his regular diet.
The other moms' suggestions of using the warm wash rag and not drinking milk are also things I WOULD do right now, too. Once the infection has cleared up, you can try adding milk back to his diet, but at his age, milk is NOT a requirement. He can get calcium in other forms (my boys love cheese, and that never seemed to cause those ear infections, because of the processing). I know your little boy is just miserable right now, and I hope all our advice is helping!

Try popsicles (sp?) those might work. When my daughter got sick all she wanted to drink was Gatorade. My daughter is 18 months old and she loves to drink from a big cup with a straw. If he will do something like that you might give it a try. I agree with going out and buying a cool new sippy cup or bottle and trying that. Anything to catch his attention. Hang in there though and at least continue feeding him through the syringe. I know it seems terrible but at least he stays hydrated.

We tried pedialyte popsicles. I let them soften a little and kind mashed them up and our little girl loved them (even when she is not sick)!

Hope that helps a little and he feels better soon.
