Two parties: one for adults to sit and talk and visit, and one for toddlers to run and scream and cry.
What is the etiquette for having a double birthday party for a toddler and adult? My son will be 2yrs on August 12 and my father will be 60yrs on August 10. I wanted to have one party for the both of them with family and friends, but I do not know how to go about it. I know I will need to get two cakes, but I am unsure about the invitations. Should I get two seperate invitations or use one invitation, and if using one invite how should I word it. Should I use a 'theme" for my 2yr old and use a seperate one for my father?Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

One invitation is fine with a theme of something like, "One is turning 60 and one is turning 2 but together they want to celebrate with you!". You could decorate with family pictures and things they like (kids stuff for your son and the number 60 theme for your dad along with stuff relating to his hobbies (cars/golf/books etc.). There could be one cake with a photo printed on it that has the two of them in it. The grab bags could have your dad's favorite candy and a few toys/trinkets for the kids.
I don't think you HAVE to have separate invitations and cakes. Do a generic theme like "Fiesta!" and have colorful decorations, balloons, games for the kids (piñata, pin the something on the something, LIMBO). Have fun!
By 60, we've had plenty of parties. I'll bet your dad would love to have a party themed for your 2-year-old. Go all out! Pin the tail on the donkey, juice boxes, etc. Yuk it up and call them both "big boys", and lavish both with plenty of birthday attention. Have fun!
My 3 year old's and husband's birthday falls within a week of each other so every year, we throw only one party. It is very colorful and fun, but no specific theme. One cake with both names on it suffices. Invites are custom photo invitations with a photo of each of them, or the two of them together "Please join us as we celebrate SON's and HUSBAND's Birthday... DATE, TIME, PLACE..." Food is usually fun and stress free.
I think that guests also appreciate only one party rather then having to attend 2 parties one week after another...
