Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone

This is a post about under appreciated body parts.

Few days ago, I sliced up my right thumb removing the pit from an avocado (which is embarrassing enough as I very often use avocados, and have removed the pits of thousands of them).

Thing is, I'm left handed, so no biggie, right?

Psh, it's rendered me damn near disabled. Apparently I use my right thumb FOR EVERY IMAGINABLE THING. Everything!

Putting the leash on the dog.
Washing dishes
ALL aspects of washing ANYTHING, especially myself.
Driving a car.
Paying for anything, rooting through my wallet for the right card.
Getting dressed, especially socks and shoes.
Peeing, I guess I hook that thumb around my underwear to pull it up. Who knew?
Flossing.
Opening the bag of dog food, opening ANYTHING. Even the fridge.
Texting. Typing THIS even.
And so on.

So what seemingly "unimportant body part" had you lacked respect for until you couldn't use it?

Happy Friday!

:)

What can I do next?

When I'm at the gym, I always wish I had gone a little lighter on the eyebrow wax, as I have to stop to wipe the sweat from getting in my eyes. I don't want to look like a caveman but can't bring myself to wear a sweat band, either. Where are the 80's , when you need them!

The throat!

If you've got a sore throat (strep throat...) you REALLY can't do anything without pain! Breathe! Swallow. Cough. Talk. Eat. Drink. Laugh. Cry.

No fun at all!

In college, I slipped with the toothbrush and took out the tiny flap of skin behind your lip that attaches your mouth to your gums. Holy cow, did that hurt. And for the longest time it also hurt to talk, eat, drink, or do anything related. It mostly grew back but I will never underestimate that tiny bit of tissue again.

I respect my knees! After my last knee surgery it took forever for the nerve block to wear off. Did you know you can't carry food if you are dependent on crutches? Nearly starved to death!

Shattered my little toe. I thought, oh, it's just a tiny little thing. No problem.

BIG problem. Little toes serve a purpose, who'd of thunk it?

Three things.

Pinkie toe, break that thing and you realize that every time you take a step it smooshes against your shoe.

Stomach: I had a small "pre cancerous" (whatever that means) mole taken from my stomach. It was about the size of a dime, but an open wound in that area makes you realize how much your stomach stretches when you bend over, stand up, sit down, and you know breath.

Breast: Same thing. Had a mole removed that required some stitches. Oh wow, every time I reached above my head for something I winced.

ETA: Oh yeah. Tail bone. Broke that sucker and it took MONTHS before I was able to sit or stand completely comfortably.

Ouch! I am sorry you are going through that! I hope your thumb heals quickly.

I know the feeling... years ago my daughter was invited to a roller skating party and she had never roller skated. So I took her to the roller rink well before the party so she could learn a little about it. In my day, we roller skated all the time and I was quite good.. When she was in the stroller, I participated in a mom's stroller stride group so I was confident in my abilities.

Well, things were going fine until I fell on my butt, broke my tail bone and right arm. While I don't consider my right arm unimportant, you don't understand how much you use all parts until one part can't do it's part for your body.

We had to go to the salon to get our hair washed. I was out of commission with chores, etc. It was miserable.

So I completely know where you are coming from on this one.

The tail bone! Ugh, the pain of sitting, and then standing.

The knee too, the pain of trying to walk.

Our body's are made for all parts to work in harmony, not one part of our body doesn't serve a purpose. So when one tiny little part gets hurt it effects everything...pain is a powerful feeling, isn't it!

I had surgery to remove a tumor on the back of my right hand. My entire right hand was bandaged from finger tips to wrist for two weeks. Being left handed I naively thought 'okay I can deal with this by compensating with my left.' Uh huh. Famous last words. A can opener is the devil's instrument if you are down to one hand regardless of your native handedness or ambidextrous talents.

I cut off the tip of my middle finger on my right hand! How can I flip people the bird?! LOL.
I didn't really think it would be a big deal, but it was. Finger is shorter when I am typing, when I am eating chips (I guess that was my grabbing finger), tampons(!)....everything! I have since figured it out, but it took a year or two.

Ah! I burnt my left thumb last night trying to not let my daughter's contribution to dinner burn - whoops! I had to go to sleep with it on ice because it hurt so bad hours after. Today it's much better, but I'm realizing all of the things I use it for!!

So it's my left thumb :). And I'm right handed!

ETA: Also the throat. I've had strep twice in the last year and I've never known worse pain than that!

I broke a pinky. A pinky, I ask you, who needs a pinky unless you've been invited to drink tea with the queen? Even then, it was splinted, so I could have stuck it out in the ultrapolite manner we associate with a tea party with royalty. So who cares, right? Fast forward to me having to ask random people on the street to tie my daughter's unruly shoe since you can't possibly get close enough to do the deed yourself with a finger splint on your pinky. Never mind laundry and dishes, diaper changing was impossible. Now that it's healed, I am well on my way to becoming one of those old ladies who knows when a storm is brewing because I can literally feel it in my pinky bones.

Fyi, have you seen Meryl Streep this week? She has her hand all bandaged up, yup, cut her hand while cutting avacados. She had hand surgery and is not expected to have feeling in that hand fr a YEAR!

I am not graceful. I also move very quickly.

Broke both pinkie toes within a few minutes..

My back is not well, so many things I struggle with all of the time. The worst was the time I could not get up of the potty. I had to call to my husband to help me stand up and pull up my underpants and pants.

I started laughing so hard, he had to wait for me to stop laughing to get me back together.

Hi Theresa,

EYES and TEETH! Now that I'm 66 and diagnosed with glaucoma, I'm concerned about losing my eyesight before the rest of my body. And having lost some precious teeth, I'm stuck wearing a partial plate the rest of my life! Ugh! Mother always said, "If I knew I'd live this long, I'd have taken better care of my teeth!" I wish I had listened!

Just wanted to let you know that I saw Meryl Streep on TV last night and she had her whole hand wrapped up with a bigger bandage on her pinky finger. When asked about it, she said she severed a tendon getting an avocado pit out even though she's done it a million times. She said her friend was using the "good" knife to cut something else, so she used the crappy knife and almost lost a finger. You're in good company.

Sorry that you got hurt. :(

This is why animals can't do things like us except monkeys and apes they have no thumbs.

I appreciate every part of my body, I figure god (or nature) knew what was truly needed to function properly. There were a couple of times when I really missed using some of my body.

1. My older brother sprayed Windex in my eyes when we were kids and I couldn't see for almost a week.
2. After having a C-section they left the epidural in for over two days and I was going nuts. I preferred the pain over no feeling at all.

Let's see. Missing my bladder, colon, a lot of small intestine and one kidney ( the other one not in great shape) so yep I do understand. I have more artificial parts than the bionic woman!!! Yeah slicing a thumb is a PIA because you do use it, but be thankful it is only a thumb. It is probably more inconventient than what I live with. We do take things for granted everyday. Hope you had a good weekend

I'm so sorry! Ouch! I love avocados! They are yummy but they are slippery little suckers!

My back. I had fusion surgery two years ago. I have 4 screws, bone graphed and a spacer. I had NO idea how much I relied on my back. Couldn't get up from the toilet, hell, couln't wipe myself (TMI, sorry!) shower, sit, stand, couldn't go up the stairs. Walked with a walker for a few weeks. It was pretty pathetic.

Baby toes. Mine are so deformed from breaking them so many times. Its a running joke in our family!

Eye lashes! Long story short I decided I didn't want the semi permanent eye lashes for as long as they were suppose to be on. Nor did I have the time to remove them properly, so I ended up removing my own with them.

Washing my face required being very careful, and my boy friend at the time said I looked like I had mange. I had to use the temporary drug store kind for weeks just to get by. Needles to say I will stick with there ones God gave me from here on out.

Sorry about your injury. Hope it gets better soon.

My entire left hand. Yep, all the ligaments were damaged in an accident and my entire hand, wrist and forearm were placed into this hand molded protective plastic piece.

There was a whole lot of compensation going, but in the end I was amazed at what I could accomplish with one good right hand an my left elbow.

I asked many strangers to tie my kids shoes, or open water bottles for me.
