So What Happened?

Ok Thanks Ladies I guess I forgot to mention her age she is 6. The Dr did not prescribe any antibiotic for the c-diff she is already taking Nitazoxanide for her Cryptosporidium. Im going to call the Dr again in the morning and ask some questions. As for my work my boss is up to date on all that is going on with her. I kinda feel like if she was going to contaminate everyone it would have already happened since she has benn going to daycare the entire time she has had this problem (since july 29) we only found out yesterday about the crypto and the Dr called tonight about the c-diff. All along the Dr was all dont worry about it its nothing maybe a virus since she has not ran a temp with this at all so they were not that concerned as long and she was staying hydrated. But still I dont want to get anyone sick. Thanks for all of the input!!! : )

My mother was recently hospitalized with C-diff. It is considered contagious until the latest of a 14 day course of Flagyl is completed or as long as the person is still having loose movements. In the hospital, they wait for 3 negative cultures before they will remove the quarantine. Frequent, frequent handwashing and use rubber gloves when caring for your daughter. Also c-diff can live on surfaces for a long time, so wipe down things and surfaces that your daughter touches, especially anything that could have come in contact with BM like toilet, bed sheets, etc. They told us c-diff is becoming very common and frequently brought on after taking antibiotics for another infection. The antibiotic kills off the bad bacteria causing the infection but also kills off the good bacteria and than c-diff takes over. I feel for you because I know what I went through caring for my mom and how bad she felt! A probiotic is recommended on an ongoing basis after c-diff, too, to keep good bacteria in you to fend against the c-diff. Our doctor recommended Align, but you would have to check with your pediatrician on whether that is ok for kids. If she has to take an antibiotic in the future, make sure she is on probiotics at the same time. All the best to you - I hope she feels better soon!

what a bummer. C-diff is extremely contagious and you'll need to show every precaution at the daycare. They should be informed and it's possible they may restrict her from the facility until she is over it. My step-mom had prob with this and said after 2 rounds of antibiotics, she finally improved when she added a high-powered probiotic to her diet.

C-diff is extremely contagious for as long as she is having loose stools or until 3 test come back negative. Use gloves when helping her in the BR and wash down the toilet seat with a bleach solution after she uses it. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and make sure that she washes her hands with soap and water frequently.

c-diff is extremely contagious!!! make sure you wash your hands like an OCD person. you didnt say how old your daughter is. so if she is in diapers, wash your hands like crazy after every single diaper change. after her baths make sure you wash her towel, if your washer has a sterilize setting that is great. if she is not in diapers I would make sure you are in there when she washes her hands to make sure she gets clean and to use a dissenfectant wipe on the toilet seat. I had c-diff about a year and a half ago. I was working at a hospital doing surgical instrument sterilization and even though we were gowned and gloved and i was on the antibiotics I wasnt allowed back to work until i came back with a negative test result. took about 2 weeksish.....i really hope no one else in your home gets it. wash her clothes really well too!

My sister lived in a nursing home during the week for several years and had it a few times, I never got it and I took care of her, changed her, bathed her, was with her 24/7 on the weekends etc. I think with normal hand washing and not just getting all in her face you will be ok. Sorry I don't know how long she has to be away from other kids though....

My dd had c-diff and salmonella she was hospitalized for the pain it was so sad and very scarry. If you take all the proper percautions you will be fine. scrub your hands if you help her clean up,if she has the loose bm. keep your bathroom sanitized, She needs to stay away from the daycare center her immune system is shot right now. she has no good or bad bacteria in her body. The c-diff is a nasty spore that can linger for awhile. my dd was put on flagile. it is an antifungal medicine. she was on it for 14 days. also get your dd on a probiotic (chewable GNC 100 for $10) at least 3x a day. yogurt just wont cut it.
be vigilant about hand washing, c-diff can be very painful the body just flushes everything out. Keep the fluids going, remember what goes in must come out. keep the foods plain and easy. gl if you want any more info you can pm me.

Please stay away from other children and elderly folks. C.Diff is wildly contagious among vulnerable populations. With all the kids taking antibiotics for ear infections there is bound to be at least one vulnerable child at the center. Daycare centers are a major reservoir of C. Diff, just like hospitals. If I worked at the center I would wipe everything down from top to bottom, with bleach wipes. Even if the kids don't get sick they can pass it along to their grandparents or other kids. Sorry, C. Diff just sucks.
