My husband and I are starting to worry about our 2.5 y/o. Both of my maternal grandparents are Type 1 diabetic so it wouldn't be unheard of for her to have it. Within the past few months she has started drinking tons more water (sometimes 10 cups a day), has an insatiable appetite, peeing a ton (which is understandable from the water intake) and has a constant yeast infection. We're wanting to get her tested to put our minds to rest. I'm just not sure how they do this. Also, is insulin the only treatment option? Both of my grandparents are insulin dependent and have been for a long time so I'm not sure of other options.
Thanks everyone. She's going tomorrow morning at 9:30am and we'll do a urine test and then possibly a blood test on Friday AM so she can fast overnight. Will let you know what they say!
I'm a lab tech and what I see most is two seperate fasting blood sugars (FBS). If one is high, it will be repeated. Two high FBS is diagnostic of diabetes. I hate to hear it in someone so young. Let us know how it goes.
Get your daughter tested if she has Diabetes it could already be doing damage to her major organs and I would hate for her to go into a Diabetic Coma.My son goes in spurts where he'll eat and drink alot or pee but I have watched him closely and it comes and goes as a grwoth spurt theres days where he hardly drinks anything let alone eats.You have good reason to be worried my family on both sides have diabetes and my husbands grandmother it runs in her famliy as well
My best friend is a diabetic. She developed it in her preteens and always treated it with pills. After having both her kids she has started using the insulin. I know controling her diet is a HUGE help on how much insulin, if any, she takes. I would get your daughter tested to be on the safe side. More then likey they will do a blood test to determine this. She might be able to control it with diet and pills, or she may have to take the injections. Best of luck!
GET HER CHECKED OUT! Insulin is the only treatment because Type 1 diabetics do not make their own insulin. Usually blood drawn and sometimes urine checks to see how her kidneys are doing are the first tests that are done.
You need to get her checked ASAP!! This is a very serious disease and it sounds like that is what she has. There have been many advances made, but insulin is the only "cure". Her pancreas has just stopped working. If she gets too much sugar in her blood, she actually could die! This is REALLY SERIOUS. Take her to the doctor!!
I have a niece who has Type 1 Diabetes. Yes, it is a hassle to deal with, but it has to be done for her to live. Your daughter could go into a diabetic coma and die. PLEASE do it NOW!!
please see your child's pediatrician on this. they can perform an A1C test to see what your child's blood sugars have been like for the last 3 months. You mentioned your maternal grandparents both are type 1. Is there anyway you can use their glucometer to test your child's fasting blood sugars? If not, just wait to get to the pediatrician's office.
i am not familiar enough with type 1 diabetes, but i do know the difference between type 1 and 2 (I have type 2). Type 1, the body does not produce insulin or enough insulin to burn the glucose, whereas type 2, the cells develop a resistance to the insulin the body produces. If your child is indeed type 1, there is no other viable treatment besides administering insulin. Good luck and please keep us posted on what is happening.
Call your pediatrician and have them do a urine sample. I just had my 4 year old tested earlier this year. If there is sugar in the urine then they can schedule the diabetes test. We also have diabetes in our family and my daughter was worrying me. I did the at home finger prick and it showed a high sugar, but the pediatrician said that those are not accurate readings on children. They did the urine test and she had no sugar, so she was good. It will make you feel better if you go and get the test done! I assure you!!
You most difinetly need to get her checked for diabetes. My son was eleven years old when he got it and those are the symptoms. He has taken two insulin shots a day since then. He is now 45 years old and has did very well living with diabetes. Please have her checked.

My oldest son now 11 has type 1 diabetes. He was diagnosed at age 7 1/2. I would certainly have my child tested at the first sign....it's a simple thing. They can check for sugar in her urine--a simple dipstick urine test will tell them what they need to know and if there needs to be further testing. Don't wait! I thought my son had a simple kidney infection, excessive thirst which wasn't really excessive as he was always a big drinker for me...but bed wetting and frequent urination.
If you have type 1 diabetes, insulin is the only treatment. Hang in there and I would be happy to talk to you!

It's been a few years since I've practiced, (I'm an RN) but I do believe that insulin is the only treatment option for
Type I diabetes. But I have been out of the loop for several years so that may no longer be correct.
I would say get her tested right away so you can start dealing with it. I would think that they will need to draw blood and check her blood sugar levels if not do a 3-6 hour glucose tolerance test.

Please don't wait any longer to have your child tested. They will probably take some blood to check her blood sugar. My 13-yr-old son was dx at the age of 6 and then my 8-yr-old nephew was dx at the age of 4. We did not have any family history before these two were dx. Increased thirst is definitely a symptom. My son did not have the appetite as your daughter - his was actually the opposite. This is a very serious, but managable, disease and the sooner you sooner you know the better for you and your daughter. Call your doctor today!
