I am worried about this because doc wants to guve it for a rash, and it is such a strong drug. Should I get a second opinion nor just give baby meds?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OK here is more details, 8 month old started cutting teeth and got an ear infection, doc gave her amoxicilin, which gave her a horrible diaper rash, so then she got changed to azithriomax, and now she has a general body rash, doc said this rash is a viral rash and the one on her bottom is a fungal rash. She gave us the prednisolone for the body rash and nystatin for the bottom rash. Also benadryl to keep her from itching because the body rash is making her soo itchy she keeps crying. She hasnt been outside so it isnt a poisin ivy sort of thing, we have no pets so its not an allergic reaction to animal dander, and no fever, so I am just going to go get a second opinion before giving her the meds.

The diaper rash from the antibiotics is normal. Get some infant probiotics. I thought it was all hype until I started using them, and my son's bum is so thankful!

For the body rash, there has to be something less strong to try first.

Hi J.,
It sounds like your little baby is getting into a cycle of pharmaceutical overuse. You don't necessarily need to treat all ear infections with antibiotics, in fact there have been multiple studies done, a big one in the Netherlands, showing that the majority of children's ear infections clear up on their own within a few days, without the use of anything. Antibiotics destroy the friendly bacteria in the body, making the body suseptible to fungal infections, hence the diaper rash your baby now has.

Prednisolone is an anti-inflammatory steroid, which further weakens the immune system overall making your baby then prone to MORE issues, that your doctor will, more than likely, prescribe additional drugs. In my opinion, it seems like your little one has already been on alot of pharmaceuticals, you listed five different ones.

If you have a naturopath in your area, I would advise having a visit with them. Also, it's summer, how about some good old naked time outside to help clear up the rash? You can also use Aquaphor over the rash. I would also get your baby on some probiotics to help build up her good bacteria. I would be wary about giving a baby prednisolone when there are other options. I'd see a different doctor who takes a more holistic approach. Good luck!

Get another opinion from a dermatologist or a pharmacist. Prednisone is a commonly used steroid for skin rashes, etc. to prevent inflammation.

But, rashes and skin conditions are really hard to diagnose. Our pediatrician knows his limitations and has had our daughter at a dermatologist since she was less than a year old.

It's OK to question your doctor, but get the facts about the medication first and have a pharmacist help you understand if it's FDA approved for children of this age:

I personally do not like it because my son had to take it for asthma. I let him take it for a small amount then I begin to refuse it because I do not like the side effects.

i dont think our pedi ever gave either of our kids anything except for my sons ear infection. he did try to prescribe something for our daughter but it was 400 and the rash went away. i would try to find something else. or even a diff pedi. i am not one that likes giving kids meds at all. * just read your responce. i put burt's bees diaper cream on my daughters neck rash and it helped it. the tube says its for other things than just diaper rash. and i love the way it smells. good luck.

Prednisone is the only thing that will stop a poison ivy/poison oak/ poison sumac reaction on me otherwise my histamine reaction to it won't quit (my records was 2.5 months of scratching and by then I was scratching my legs bloody in my sleep). It might be the right medication, but it's hard to know unless you know the source of the rash. A second opinion wouldn't hurt. How bad is the rash? Is your child very uncomfortable or in pain? There are a lot of things to consider, but a doctor will be the best source of information.

I'd get a second opinion from a dermatologist. It seems a bit much, but you didn't say what kind of rash, so it may be the best thing. If you're worried, check it out.
