Do You Know How to Make This Food?

My grandmother used to make me a kind of open faced grilled cheese in the oven when I was very young... for some reason I just thought of it. I've never done it before. It was like one piece of bread, one piece of cheese, and like I said, she made it in the oven?

I know this is really simple ;)

What time and how long do you leave it in the oven? Do you butter the bread or anything?

What can I do next?

Oooh oooh!! Pick me! Pick me!! LOL!

In my house, we call these sandwiches "Delights" & we ONLY eat them in the summer time.

Here's how we do it:
Preheat your oven to the low broil setting.
Cook bacon until it's almost done, but still floppy. Do not let it crisp up or it will burn under the broiler.
Take your bread & toast it just lightly so it's a tiny bit crunchy on the outside & place it on a cookie sheet. No butter needed (which is saying something because I adore butter, but seriously, you don't need it in this).
Once the bread & bacon are ready, top the bread with plenty of cheese, whatever kind you like but I go for plain old fashioned white american for this recipe.
Slice up a couple of totally ripe tomatoes & lay them on the cheese. Top with plenty of salt & pepper & then the bacon.
Put the sammies under the broiler for about 5 minutes, but keep an eye on them & turn the tray if you need to. The cheese will melt & bubble, the tomato will heat up & the bacon will cook the rest of the way.

It is ooey gooey fantastical deliciousness!!

I grew up eating this, and still do.
No butter. Just put the cheese (we used sliced cheese) on top, put in a pan, and toast (if you have a toaster oven). If you don't, just put it on broil and put pan on bottom rack. Watch it (non-stop and very closely) until the cheese melts and you are done. The key for me is to put it on a pan and to pull it out between that stage where the cheese melts and the bread gets too brown. I love that one side is crunchy and the other side is softer. I still make my cheese toast this way today!

I make these all the time and I call it a toasted cheese sandwhich (very common in Europe). I put the sandwich together (I don't butter the bread) and stick it in the toaster oven. If you don't have a toaster over, stick it in regular oven on broil and flip it over after top is browned. I would just watch it.... I have no idea of the time, my toaster oven just cooks them perfectly on the middle setting.

We do it just like Melissa J, except that I use sharp cheddar cheese and layer it a bit differently. I do the toast, then the bacon, then the tomatoes (I try to seed them so they don't sog up the bread), and then the cheese. You could use shredded cheese, or just slice brick cheese really thin. Then just put in the toaster oven (or under the broiler) until the cheese melts. Keep an eye on these, as any parts not covered in cheese will char if left too long under the heat. Also, for a bit heartier of a meal, use french bread cut into six inch lengths and halved (you don't have to toast it first).

As for your Grandma's sandwich, if you know the type of cheese and bread she used, I would just toast the bread a little, cover with cheese, and place in broiler until the cheese melts.

Lol. We often do this w/ bagels or turkey sandwiches.

Just toss it in the oven on a piece of foil. 350 is fine or you can set it lower. Just keep an eye on it. We leave 'em in till the cheese melts. Usually 5-10 minutes depending on the type of cheese.

The beauty of doing it this way is that you don't need to use butter. But of course you can if you want.

HTH! Enjoy!

I toast the bread first, then butter it, put grated cheddar cheese on top and then broil until the cheese is melted. Personally, I like to put ketchup on it which is how my grandma used to make it for me, but that part's not everyone's cup of tea. Either way, it's delicious!

When I make cheese toast, I put it in the toaster oven and toast it just long enough to melt the cheese. Don't butter it.
