Do You Have an INSERT in Your Fireplace?

We put an insert in our fireplace to be more efficient. I called to get a Chimney Sweep to come and he says it needs to be pulled out to clean behind and above it. Is that correct? He said it would be $150 if they pull it out or $90 if I do it before they get there.

What can I do next?

We have an insert and yes, we pull it out. My husband had someone do it once before I met him so I don`t if the price is fair. He bought a chimney sweep and does it himself. It`s actually pretty easy..... I`m glad I have him cause I don`t climbing on the roof! I stick to cleaning behind the insert. It is much cheeper doing it yourself if you have someone willing to be on the roof. But you do want to clean behind it cause the soot falls back there.

I have had my insert for 20 years and it's never been pulled out! The same company that installed it comes every year to maintain it and it's never been pulled out. I wouldn't let them do it.

I have no idea, but you should get more than one opinion for any home repair. Just get a couple more companies out there and you'll get a feel for what needs to be done. When we put our insert in, there was a HUGE difference between the prices we were quoted. Shop around!

As far as I know it is a good idea to have one. We don't and are saving up now because the condensate from the furnace venting into our chimney has eroded all the mortar in the bricks so it could all collapse any day. A liner keeps the moisture off of your bricks and protects them.

Humm? I guess it makes sense but I've not heard that and we've had 2 people out over the last 3-4 years for different fireplace issues. I would call Pagitt? Not sure of the spelling, but they are honest, reliable, and have been around for YEARS!

Good Luck.
