Do You Have a Mattress on the Floor?

Hi, for those of you who have your mattress on the floor for safer co-sleeping... What kind of mattress do you have? Did you buy a special one? Do you also have the box springs on the floor? I am shopping for a double sized mattress for my son's room. I was thinking of getting a futon, but would that be a bad investment? Thanks for the advice!

What can I do next?

We just had a normal full-size mattress and box spring, we just didn't buy a frame for it and put it directly on the floor. It was nice because it was safe for co-sleeping, plus I didn't have to clean that annoying space underneath the bed.

Yes I have a mattress on the floor for my 8 yo son because he has epilepsy, and could fall off a bed, he just has a plain mattress with a memory foam topper and he is very comfy

Futons are not very comfortable! I'd just put a top mattress on the floor.

My 4y is currently in a toddler bed that she is outgrowing. Her bed converts to a full size bed. Last night we bought a new mattress and a 'bunkie' board. Its a large board that you use in a bed frame instead of a box spring. This helps keep the mattress level at just a bit higher than what she is currently used to.

When my sis was younger, my parents put the box spring and mattress on the floor. They had no problems with it.

I suggest a natural latex mattress with no fire retardants or other toxic ingredients. They last forever, and have a most amazing balance of support and softness. My husband and I have had one for over 5 years and it's still like new, no soft or saggy spots, and it supports my sensitive hips and shoulders gently while supporting his back firmly.

I got my grandson a natural latex crib mattress when he was born, and his parents sold it like new three years later. They have bought him a latex twin mattress, extra-long, because they expect it to last him into adulthood.

You will need to get a doctor's Rx to have a mattress with no fire retardants, but that's generally easy enough. Google for sources; many companies that sell organic and natural housewares carry them.

I lived for years with a mattress on the floor and found it very comfortable. I also lived for years with a futon, but it packed down very quickly, developing low spots and a very hard sleeping surface.

You can do this any way you want. I prefer a plain old mattress right on the floor (no box spring - that raises it too high for my taste). A futon mattress will work fine too. And then for either, you can use that as the child's bed as they grow. No need to purchase a crib, really. There's a whole school of thought that says babies develop best if they're able to crawl in and out of their bed themselves, so people put futon mattresses right on the floor. My cousin did this and loved it with her daughter.

We just have a regular mattress and boxspring on the floor for my son. A futon would not be a bad investment though -- you could always buy a frame for it later on and use it as a couch or fold out bed for guests.

How about a bed with a trundle? The trundle is low to the ground. One the child is older and ready for a regular bed, you just move them up to the top and tuck the trundle under. This gives you a spare bed for future sleep over's or siblings in the same room.

I personally don't like futons because they don't seem to sleep well. If you are going to get a mattress for the child's room so you can cosleep. You may consider getting an air mattress. They are less expensive than a traditional mattress and you can adjust the firmness. Not all of them are that close to the floor though.

Try and see if you like the mattress on the futon you have selected. Be certain to think long term. Would this mattress feel good to you night after night.

We had a mattress on the floor for about six months (while we were deciding which kind of twin bed to buy for my daughter). So I cannot offer any insight on the brand but I do want to say that without the box spring, it was RIGHT on the floor. I think a mattress would be better than a futon because in my opinion futon mattresses are not that comfortable. My daughter loved her bed on the floor and I never had to worry about her rolling off it!
