I always gain about 5 lbs over the winter. I don't even stress over the numbers any more because it always melts itself off once I start digging in the garden again. It's been a cold winter and it's extra insulation ;)
Hi ladies, I just have a quick question, I have gained maybe 3 pounds this winter, I eat the exact same, so I was wondering if we all gain a couple of pounds automaticly during the winter months? I realize we are less active and stuff, I am just wondering if this is something you all experience as well. Thanks:))

Hi Amy,
Clearly, were not as active as the summer hence the gym seems a lot busier. Also year after year your body is changing. Read from Belly Fat to Belly Flat by C W Randolph, MD. You'll love it!
You'll be down 3lbs in know time:).

How was your holiday eating? Often the extra pounds come from just a week or two of holiday eating and then they come off when you are more active in the spring and summer, and more likely to eat more salads, etc.
A good low-cal option in winter is soup. There are a lot of great at-home workout options as well. I went through Turbo Jam recently and loved it!
Yes, it's the decreased activity and also the body's response to the colder temperatures (slightly slower metabolism). But if it's something that you care about, I wouldn't wait until warmer months to combat it because as you get older it will be harder to shed the few pounds and before you know it you're putting on 3 to 5 extra pounds a year.
I like to maintain my weight year-round so I try to walk at lunchtime and do a Pilates DVD a few times a week. Also a couple of times a winter, I try on some of my fancy dresses (that I almost never wear) to gauge the fit. Swimsuits look awful in winter (pasty white) and it's hard to know if you're actually the same size. With party dresses or semiformal gowns the fabric doesn't tend to give and you can really tell if you're bigger somewhere that you weren't before. Then you know what you have to do. (I do it once or twice a winter only. I'm not obsessive about it.) Then come spring or summer I don't have a terrible shock that my summer clothes don't fit.
I think there's probably an evolutionary component to adding fat during the winter, but I also think it's due to less activity (cold, fewer daylight hours to be outside) and the tendency to eat heavier or comfort foods because there is less fresh produce to tempt us. We're indoors because we have to be, and we also aren't wearing revealing clothes to make us so aware of our size. When you figure out the solution, let us all know! ;-)
ugh! less activity more comforting foods and all that adds up to a few extra lbs on all of us. Youre in good company!
Yes!! Activity is the key. I am sooo less active, there for not a lot of calories burned. I'll try to make up for the gain in the summer!!
Do not know. But I do know that I used to gain 10-20 pounds every winter. Think I nibbled a bit more. Think I did ( and still do) "hybernate" some in cold winters.
Activity slows waaaaay down in winter.
Its sorta like your body is getting ready for spring clean up and gardening.
I surely would not be upset about three pounds...or even the ten. I would take care to shed extra in the spring tho.
I have often wondered if some "winter weight" were automatic as you do. We, in Maine and other cold areas used to need a bit of extra chub to stay warm in the winter time. Now we do not have all those outside chores...wood, water, outhouse, shoveling , barn animals to tend, eggs to gather, ect.
Well, some of us do still have shoveling. I think we really needed the chub to maintain us from the cold.
Downeast in the winter almost every winter meal contained salt pork. I find myself making up those meals occassionally in the winter...sum yummy I will tell you LOL
Dont worry about it deah, you are young, strong, just watch the treats and nibbling...make up a little exercise routine if you are truly distressed..and be sure to be active during March and April and watch it all go away.
Best wishes and God bless
