Do you put your hot pots and pans on your granite, without a potholder underneath? I was told by someone that you can just take your stuff out of the oven, and off the stove, and put them on the granite countertop. I guess granite is rock, so that wouldn't matter I suppose, but I was just curious if you know different. Also, what cleaner do you like best, to keep it all clean and shiny?
That's what I love the most about having granite, that I never have to worry about putting hot stuff on it. For every day use you can just use hot soapy water, but about once a week I use cleaner, can't remember the name, but it's in a black bottle & I get it at Ace Hardware. Works like a charm!

I don't set hot pans directly on the granite. You can. I just cannot bring myself to do it! Weird, I know. I am just so used to setting a hot pad down first.
I just use hot soapy water to wash the countertops. You should never use harsh chemicals on granite. I would stear clear of things like vinegar or anything acidic. Cleaners containing acidic ingredients such as vinegar could cause deep etches and scratching.
Another option to make your granite shiny - Get a quart-size spray bottle, add a quarter cup of isopropyl rubbing alcohol, a couple of drops of liquid dishwashing detergent and then fill this to the top with water.

Yes I put hot pans on my granite all the time, and I just wipe it daily with a hot soapy rag, no special cleaner is needed.
Granite is an 'igneous' rock.
Formed by molten rock.

Thanks for posting this! I'm glad so many people put hot things down. I just can't bring myself to do it!! When ours was put in, they said it's fine, but I just can't do it, I usually put down a towel or potholder first. Silly.
Method makes a great granite cleaner for big cleans, but for daily stuff just soapy water or all purpose spray.

I used to have tile counter tops, an which you can simply place hot items, and BOY, is it hard to adjust to having to use trivets or pads! So, yes, you can just place hot items right on the counter and no damage will occur...lucky lady!

I don't know if you're 'supposed' to, but my girlfriend just put in brand new granite countertops and does this daily. She cleans them with clorox wipes throughout the day, then uses windex to make them shiny when company comes over :)

Hello~ Yes, you can, but I choose not to do it. Call me old school. Besides the granite is always so cool. Just easier to place a potholder on hot plate down. I don't want my food cooled off by the granite. I use soap and water and once a week I wipe it down with Simple Green, stone cleaner. It's good for everyday use. And we seal our granite every six months. I always hate doing it, but then it's a good excuse to wipe everything down. We've always done this and it looks good, nice and smooth. We use a small bottle called Sealer, by SCI, Stone Care International. Happy cleaning....

Yes, I do! It does feel so wrong after many years of a soft laminate material countertops.
I clean them with Windex. Every night. That's the only downfall, they smudge and show grime really well.

Just remember that if you put hot pans on your granite the heat will transfer to the granite. This is why I won't do it. I'm afraid I will put the hot item on the granite, move it and then put my hand on the hot spot on the granite.
For three years I've been using Clorox wipes after I've made something and I use Green Works on the granite. So far, there hasn't been any damage to my granite.

I cannot bring myself to put something directly from the stove or oven down directly onto the granite either. But I will put things that are still VERY WARM... maybe even hot--but not just removed from stove/oven.
I don't use anything acidic to clean my granite (no vinegar/lysol kitchen spray) without following up with clean water. What I DO use is StoneSpecific Polished Granite Cleaner/Resealer. I originally found it at Lowe's but they didn't have it the last few times I looked for it. So I ordered online (Amazon, lol). It works REALLY well, and doesn't leave that sort of opaque faded look, like some of the other things do. It is bright and shiny.
AND it is food safe afterwards.

Yeah, that's the great thing about granite. You can put hot stuff on it, and it's fine.
You can use just about anything to clean it, but never use Windex (ammonia is no good for most polished stone surfaces). Generally speaking, I just wipe it down with soapy water from the sink. Every other year, when I remember to, I re-seal it. That's about it!
