Do Question for Mamapedia Hair Stylistsanandand

So, I'm having a bad hair year. Last October, I cut my hair into a cute little pixie and I loved it! I did not love growing it out. So to grrl a little better about myself I started dying it bold colors. First, I bleached it to white and kept that maintained for a few months, then I went hot pink, then blue. That's where I'm at now...horribly faded blue with about 2 or 3 inches of roots. It's gross and I hate it. My hair is shoulder length now but of course its very badly damaged.

So here's the question: I'm going to an actual hair stylist in a salon next month and I want my hair dyed a dark red (what it was before I did the pixie) and I'm sure she'll cut off a couple of inches of dead weight. I really don't want to have to go through family thanksgiving with this gross hair so I was thinking about bleaching it back to blonde just one last time (I know!)

What will be easier for the stylist to dye over? The blue with roots or the bleached damage? I hope this question makes sense!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the replies! I've decided to just leave it alone and do some protein treatments until my appointment. I can't move my appointment because it's a Christmas gift from my MIL. I'm going to get a cite hat for thanksgiving.

I am pregnant but I've already talked to my midwife about hair dye and she told ne that its totally safe to dye your hair during pregnancy.

Hi M.,

IMHO I wouldn't color it OR bleach it anymore yourself. If you bleach it one more time and you're hair is already chemically damaged you could wind up with hair that is so over processed that it will turn to mush. I've seen this happen and there is no fixing it when it gets to that point. If you color it to try to cover up the blue and it's the wrong shade of red it may end up purple and then the stylist will have a lot to do to try to correct the 2 different colors. My suggestion would be to live with the blue hair for a while or get in to see your stylist before Thanksgiving. And please let the professionals take on coloring your hair in the future :) In the long run it could end up costing a fortune to get a color correction versus a color or retouch.
Good Luck!

Don't do a thing more before your appt. next month. I would absolutely not weaken it further by bleaching it before then; it may even fall out or completely break off if you do. You also need to start doing some protein treatments on your hair. When you go in next month, the stylist will begin by "filling" the pigment back in that has been stripped out w/ the bleaching, then she'll color it red. The red may not even stick, though, to be honest with with. You'll have to really, really baby it and wash it infrequently with quality salon shampoo for color. Good luck!

I agree with the previous answers that you shouldn't do anything else before your appointment! If anything, get a conditioning treatment or mask to help repair some of the damage to your hair. I like the Garnier 3 minute hair mask. Sally Beauty has a lot of good products that are affordable too, and the sales people can help you find just what you need.

Aren't you pregnant? I would honestly, cut off all that nasty blue and try to make the most out of your natural color. It's best to stay away from chemical when pregnant.

Do you know your stylist well? Can you call and beg to take any cancellation appointment she gets?

Don't do anything. If you really hate the waiting period, get a really cool wig. I have a friend who did that and bought several wigs for her different moods.

Can you try a semi-permanent hair color? It'll wash out in 28 shampoos & won't damage your hair. Try a dark color to cover the blue.
