I was having a wonderful conversation with one of the mom's at the Blue & Gold this evening - we were talking about our cell phones and how much they have changed our lives...and changed from the bricks they were in the beginning!!!
Any way - I turn mine off at night. I don't leave it plugged in over night either. I believe that keeping it plugged in over night does nothing but harm the battery. As it can't keep charging once it's fully charged. She leaves hers plugged in all night long and admits that her battery does fail her frequently. However, she doesn't have a land line - they only have cells.
We have a house phone/land line so I don't "have" to have it on.
So do you leave your cell phone plugged in all night? Is it on 24 hours day?
I have the Samsung Droid. I had the LG droid and it died after 4 months - so they upgraded me to this one. the guy said not to leave it on the charger after it says "charge complete"...it CAN mess with the battery. Not saying it WILL but it CAN.
@1babygirl! OH MY!! You sound like my husband!! his phone is from 2005 as well and they keep asking if we want to upgrade it. Nope. If he used more 10 minutes in a month - I would be TOTALLY shocked!!
Thanks peeps!! keep 'em coming!

I keep mine on all the time, unless I am on a plane..I don't have a landline, so if someone needs to get ahold of me, they can call me. I do charge it up when it needs to be charged, but that's about it.
My brother was mugged in D.C. , and called me afterwards. It was around 4 in the morning, but he got through to me. I have had so many times been thanful I had mine on.

I've had the same cell phone since 2005 (yeah, old school, or just cheap! haha). I keep it on all day and have it plugged in ALL night. I have NEVER had a problem with the battery, it's the original (knock on wood, lol), WOW, that's 7 years!! It's a Samsung, btw.. :-) Yes, I will upgrade one of these days :))) Oh, so, I don't think leaving it plugged in over night does anything harmful, mine is still chugging along after 7 years!
BTW, I use my phone a lot! Mostly text messaging :)

Husband="My wife is annoying me"
Droid with women voice="How long how you being married for?"
H="10 years"
Droid gives him a divorce site
OMG!!!!!

it's on 24 hours a day...and only plugged in all night if the battery is super low when I go to bed. Generally have it charging all day via the computer because I listen to Pandora/and or iphone/ipod while working!
ETA: I'm married to an electronics engineer...and since he has not put don't charge overnight on my list of things I can't do with it...I am unsure of that one. I don't have issues with my battery...my issue is operator issue...this weird lady has shattered the screen!

Ours are on 24/7/365. I often leave mine on the charger all night and have had no battery issues. Hubby does too. Most of my friends leave theirs on the same way and a couple have dock ports that they just put their phone in over night.

It's on 24 hours a day.
I put it on vibrate at night so that I am not awakened by it in the late or early hours.
I plug it in to charge only when it's on it's last bar of battery. Sometimes it gets plugged in overnight. Other times I plug it in when it's beeping to be plugged in. I prefer to plug it in when I can KEEP it plugged in for the whole charge (ie: I don't plug it in for 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there. I want to plug it in once and get a full charge). I think I've read that it's best for the battery to do it that way (wait till it's almost dead, then do one full charge). Must have some truth to it. I only charge it once or twice a week. The same battery's lasted me over 2 years.
We do not have a landline that we use. Just a cell phone for me and one for husband.

I don't ever turn mine "off". But I only plug it in to charge when I will be able to unplug it after an hour or so, when it has fully charged. And if husband plugs his in to charge before he goes to bed (he goes to bed well before I do usually) then I unplug his once it is fully charged.
Mine stays in my purse all the time, when I am at home. So, always on the kitchen counter. We DO have a landline in our home, so it isn't necessary to leave the cell phones "on", but then I don't have to remember to turn it on in the morning.
I have never had a problem with the battery life in any phone I have had.

My cell phone is always on because I don't have a land line. I never knew leaving your cell phone plugged in all night could harm the battery until I read your post and asked my hubby about it. He confirmed that it actually can, in fact, harm your battery. I usually do leave it plugged in, and it will beep at me when it's fully charged and ask me to unplug it. I didn't understand it before. Now I know why! I don't think I will leave it plugged in all night anymore. Thank you for being full of useful information - and this is definitely not even the first time I have learned something from you - thanks, Cheryl O! :-)

I'm one of those who isn't charging my phone until I realize it's dying. I don't know why I can't seem to remember... but I feel like I haven't charged it in forever, so perhaps I am doing something for the battery?
I never turn mine off, but I do use it also as a watch and an alarm clock. On the weeknights it comes in my room and sometimes on the weekends. I guess I'm so darn cool that not that many people call me. :-)
One thing I started doing is keeping it in the same spot during the day. I realized that without a land line I never know where my phone is. I've even gotten on fb and messaged my friend to call me so I can find it. Is it in my purse? My coat? etc. If there were an emergency and I needed the phone asap I'd have no clue where to find it. So, I started keeping it in one place during the day and it's sure nice to know where it is. :-)

I never fully shut mine off but I leave it charging overnight where I'd never hear it during the night. My battery seems fine, I don't worry about leaving it in the charger after it's fully charged. I charge it every night....I use my phone A LOT...not so much for calls but for web surfing, texting and games.

I leave it next to me, not plugged in. My phone gives me several hours of warning before it goes dead. I only plug it in when it's completely dead. If it's dying at bed time, I will go ahead and plug it in, but that is very infrequent. We don't have a land line.
I have great battery life.

I don't even know where mine is right now. Haven't known for weeks. It's in this house somewhere and I can guarantee you it's dead. I am texting impaired. Can't do it. Takes forever.
I also think that it's perfectly okay for me to be unavailable. Why should people constantly be able to reach me? If I actually have an hour to be by myself, even if it's running errands, I do not want a call from anyone asking me what I'm up to or when I'm coming home. I'll be there when I get there and I'll probably have something for YOU.
They are great if my husband and I are out and my son is babysitting. They are great if one of the kids is sick and I have to run get medicine. They are great if I forget the order when I'm going to McDonald's.
That is all.

My alarm clock drains the battery before it's time to wake up!!! So I keep it plugged in.
Ditto... no house line. Phones are on, and on the nightstand, at bedtime.
Maybe it's because of the alarmclock sucking power all night... but my batteries last forever (knock wood).

Well, I guess Im confused. I bought a cell phone, cheap, no plan, just buy minutes/days of service. I only got it to use when we went to Disneyland 10 months ago in case we went different ways and needed to meet back up at a certain time. I recharge it when it starts beeping. I keep it in my purse just in case I need it. So far in 10 months, I have used 6 minutes of time. Yes, SIX minutes. I dont really know how to use it, and dont really want to know how to use it. I have made 2 calls, and it took me forever to figure out how, and answered it once when it rang even tho I can see on the screen that I have 20 missed calls from numbers I dont even recognize. Anyway. My confusion is this. I have walked into places that have signs saying "please turn off cell phones" including a funeral service, and I have no idea how to turn mine off. I had just assumed because I didnt "turn it ON" that it was off, but I suppose it isnt off, if it can beep when running low on power. I guess I am really really behind the rest of the world. Do I care? Nope.

I turn my cell off at night, as to I know all the notifications I get would keep me awake. I also am sad the way cell phones have almost taken over our society. I grew up as a kid not having a cell phone nor did my parents until I was older. I am sad that kids now days revolve their lives around these electronics... Or some kids I should say. We also have land lines still and I will continue to have them, for I think they are a good idea. I usually charge mine in the morning while I'm getting ready for the day. Great post Cheryl. Thanks

I just wrote a birthday card to my BF...we are both 50 now.
I closed by saying.....We've been friends since phones had cords....
I can remember back in junior high school having to stretch the phone cord from the wall out the garage door to have any privacy whatsoever....and I'm sure we discussed nothing of import.
To this day I cannot walk and talk. I must sit or stand still.
So my Iphone, is not plugged in at night, or anywhere near me most of the time. It's kept in my purse, and I often forget to turn the sound back on after being in Dr offices or church. So I can go all day and not remember to check my phone. Which my husband becomes very irritated in trying to txt or call me. Oops....
I am addicted to playing Scrabble while waiting for kids at their events.

I have a land line. I rarely use my cell. I don't keep it on when I'm home at all unless I'm expecting one of the kids to text me from somewhere. I don't typically keep it on when I am out and about, again, unless I'm expecting to hear from one of the kids. I usually have it on at work but in my bag or coat pocket on vibrate. I check it occasionally but again, if there was an emergency with one of the kids, they know where I work and their school records say so. There's no one that needs immediate and constant access to me. I'm not that important and I've never spent a lot of time on the phone.

mine is on 24/7. I only charge it when the battery is dying or low. During the day, not at night.
I barely ever use my cell phone so it only needs charged usually once a week. With the "privacy block" on our land line for some reason the school can't hit the buttons to shut off the private call on thier end so they have to call my cell phone if they need me.
At night my oldest uses it for his alarm clock, even though he has an actual one in his room. I don't get teens, but oh well.
