hello moms!

i had my front tooth crowned in july. i did not recieve a root canal when i got the crown. for the past 3 days it has been throbbing and aching. could my tooth underneath be cracked or could i need a root canal?. i am going out of state tomorrow. i looked up dentist that take my insurance. im thinking if it hurts still when i get up the my destination i will make an appointment. to see what needs to be done. if the dentist there says that the tooth needs a root canal i think i can wait till i get back home to fix it. well providing its not urgent. what do you all think. thanks in advance!

my tooth was crowned due to having a bad tooth from childhood. my adult tooth was wearing away and was yellow and 1/4 of it had been worn off. other then that there was no other issue so they said a crown would be a fix for it. this is my first one so i didnt think after this long i would now have pain.

Yep, sounds like you need one. Why did they crown it in the first place? I've never gotten a crown without a root canal before. You probably have an abcess or an infection that needs antibiotics before you can get it taken care of.

yeah you might need one. So I'm guessing you had a cavity first and that was the reason for the first crown? If so that Dentist may have not gotten all the decay and yeah now it's worse so you need a root canal. Or you might have just developed tooth sensitivity from that crown. It can come on kinda out of no where. I was having aching pain in a few of my molars about a year ago. I thought for sure I had cavities but when I went in the Dentist said I didn't have any. He told me to use the sensitive tooth paste and that stopped all the pain. So there is a chance it might just be that. But get it looked at for sure.

Did they drill away so much tooth that the pulp was exposed? Did they rip at some of the flesh when they drilled?
Typically when a dying tooth first starts, the pain will come and go. It will also be excruciatingly sensitive to cold.

If you are having solid pain for 3 days without letting up- I would say there is an infection most likely under the gum line somewhere...in the tooth? I dunno..but somewhere. No one will give you ABX for just calling in.(well, they might if you tell them you have to get on a plane!) Usually they will make you come in for an xray. Call the dentist that did the crown if they can squueze you in the morning- the xray should be at no charge. If they say you need a root canal, make sure you get an RX for vicoden. Drying teeth can be SO painful that advil cannot stand up to it- you dont want to be in THAT situation over a weekend. Ive done it and I was crawling the walls, I thought i was going to die.

have your dentisy call you in an antibiotic if possible. It does sound like you need a root cannal.

The only person who can answer that question is a dentist.
If you cannot afford to go to a dentist, I see you are near Loma Linda.
See if their medical school has a dental clinic.
Maybe they can help you.
