Do Diapers 'Expire'...? Safe to Use Older Diapers?

Hey there everyone!

We recently did a massive cleaning-out at my MIL's house, and along with a couple other things, I was given two big boxes of (apparently) 20+ year old Huggies diapers for my youngest. They're unopened dated from 1990, and aside from the colors on the outer packaging looking a little faded in places I *think* they stayed sealed while buried under my MIL's belonging's.

Would these be safe to actually USE for my younger DS at nighttime..? O.o I haven't actually opened either of the packages inside the boxes yet. I know diapers these days have all kinds of chemicals in them (as I'm assuming they did back then?), and wasn't sure if that should be a concern or not.

Greatly appreciate any advice!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions ladies!! The majority opinion seemed to be that it would more than likely be okay, and giving where the boxes were actually stored (securely in a fairly dry storage shed) I gave it a go and tried the lesser worn box of the older diapers with DS2 this past week.

So far *knock on wood* they've done really well! The adhesive on the tabs of each that we've tried so far have been just fine, and held up all night for a kid that is a big time wriggler overnight. The diapers themselves seem substantially more 'bulky' than what we're used to, and have a kind of plasticy outer covering as opposed to the clothlike outside of his usual. But thus far it hasn't phased DS2 at all, as he only wears an actual 'diaper' at nighttime anymore.

He's historically been a heavy wetter overnight, and thus far we haven't had a single issue with them. So far..so good!

Thanks a bazillion for the pointers!

There's no diaper like a free diaper -- regardless of age.
Use them!

The only things I can think of as possible issues are the adhesive drying up and perhaps the absorbent stuff not absorbing any more. Neither of those things would threaten your child's health, just be inconvenient. You could test one and see if it sticks and if it absorbs. If it's the adhesive, as someone said, you can use another piece of tape.

Given the price of diapers, I wouldn't toss them without trying them first.

I'd use them in a heart beat as long as they look fine. You might have to duct tape them to keep them on if the tape isn't good anymore but for free diapers its totally worth it.

I can't imagine what would actually expire, except that the adhesive on the tapes might dry out. If that works and the diapers stay on, I would think they would be fine.

I'd try them and see how they do.
It should be alright.

I would try them during the day the first time to make sure they didn't leak. If the absorbent still worked, I'd use them.

Disposable diapers are full of chemicals. I wouldn't use new ones, much less old ones.

20+ year old paper product? I'd be tossing. Especially if you're not sure they stayed sealed.

I can't imagine throwing out perfectly good items because I was afraid of them. Disposable diapers are very convenient. If you want to pull off a diaper and toss it then use one. If it works then use them all.

call Huggies and ask them!! Heck - sell them on ebay - you might find a collector!!

I don't know if I would use them or not.

They have probably dried out by now for me personally, I would toss. If you are in dire financial straits then try and see if they cause a rash etc

If the diapers feel hard, they've been exposed to moisture and should be tossed. If they feel like a new diaper, use them.

Check the box for an expiration date.

I think I would google the manufacturer, go to contact us and either email or call and ask them this question. My initial reaction is to toss them but it never hurts to ask a question.
