Discoloration of Tooth

My daughter just turned 5 yrs old. She has been making comments about her top front tooth hurting, but since we had just had a checkup I didn't think much about it. I was looking at it the other day and noticed it was discolored, which concerned me. Yesterday she came home and told me her tooth was loose. Is this normal for her too already be losing her teeth? And if so, do they normally discolor before it happpens?

What can I do next?

Yes, it is normal for her to start losing teeth at five years old. Some children lose them early. Have you asked her if someone hit her in the mouth? or perhaps she bumped it? The discoloration suggests that there might have been a trauma.

Hope this helps.

Loose teeth at 5 are perfectly normal. Discolored, however, is not. I would put in a call to the dentist. My older son is 6. His top 2 baby teeth came in discolored. He had (since he has lost them both) poor enamel on then. One tooth actually died, had an exposed root and quite the cavity. We left it alone since it caused no pain and we danced for joy when if fell out. The permanent teeth that have come in are just fine.

My first thought is to ask if she has been on amoxicilin or something similar frequently due to ear infections etc. throughout her childhood. This tends to cause that problem. If not I would go ahead and set up an appointmet to double check to make sure it is normal loosing the teeth process and not an infection or something.

Has your little one ever had to be on high dosages of antibiotics for any length of time? Sometimes this will cause discoloring and even loosen teeth. But, the answer is also yes to the question above. Some children loose their teeth very early.

Have the most blessed day,

One of my sons had a discolored tooth when he was about 3 1/2 years old and I was advised that he had "bruised his tooth"! I found it odd, but most likely he fell on his tooth at some point and I was told it would eventually go away...which it did, but it takes a long time...Months? - Hard for me to remember since it was 3 1/2 years ago...Hope this helps! Also, it is unlikely that she is loosing a top tooth yet if she hasn't lost one from below yet.

and two boys: ages 7 and 9

The age is normal for losing teeth. Both my kids were 5 when their teeth started to fall. The discoloration doesn't sound normal though. You may just want to call your dentist and see what he thinks. It never hurts to ask. Hope it's nothing to worry about.

Another thought is injury to the tooth. My daughter's tooth turned a little ashen after two hard bumps within a few days of each other. Her tooth also loosened up a little bit. We told her not to bite into ANYTHING for a few days, and that seemed to help. It tightened back up and colored up after a few days of babying it.

As far as losing teeth, I've always heard that if your child got teeth as a baby early, it stands to reason that they will probably be the first ones in their peer group to lose their baby teeth. My kids both got teeth later as a baby, so they will probably be the last ones in their classes to lose them.

Yes it is normal for her to be loosing her teeth already most start around 6 or seven but it can be eariler her permanet teeth could be maturing faster and getting ready to come in. I remember my girls some of their got discolored when they got loose because they aren't getting nutrition anymore.
hope this helps

Loosing teeth at 5 is common. Discoloration, however, is not. It could be a sign that the nerve is dead which could cause a serious problem for the new tooth. Did she hit her mouth on something?

You should get her tooth checked asap.

Hello A.,
My son is 7 and he just lost a tooth that was discolored. It was loose and then turned a funny shade of pink/brown. I took him to the dentist and he called it "Pink tooth". The dentist said that he had read about it in school but had never seen it. This is the way he explained it to me... As a baby tooth is being pushed out by the new tooth the roots disolve from the bottom up. But, sometimes the tooth will disolve through the middle first. The discoloration that we see is a reflection from the inside of the tooth ie gums etc. This can also happen if the tooth is a little loose and the child bites something wrong. So maybe it has a little bleeding on the inside. My son bit a twist off cap to get it off and moved the loose tooth a little. That is how we ended up with "Pink Tooth". He just lost it 2 weeks ago. When I looked at it you could tell that the center of the tooth was hollow and there was still part of the root left. You should go to your dentist just to be sure though. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Sounds like she may have bumped or injured her tooth.
I lost my 2 front teeth at age 4 1/2... and didn't get them back until I was six. No issues here.

Yes, 5 years old is the "normal" age for kids to start losing teeth--basically around kindergarten age. The discoloring part I don't think is common and if she was saying thing it was hurting the nerve may have died, or maybe she bumped it really hard causing tooth injury which can lead to the decay. It wouldn't be a bad idea though to call the dentist and see what they say about the pain and discoloration.

normal to discolor first (more noticable on front teeth). The tooth is "dead" before it falls out. Normal to lose at age 5 or to wait until 6 is normal too. Everyone is on their own schedule.

Just had my 4 1/2 year old to the Pediatric Dentist for her check up. Teeth are perfect but he said she would be losing them in the next few months due to her adult teeth coming in. My oldest got teeth when she was 3 months old. She had 8 teeth already gone when she started Kindergarten.

Check with the Dentist with the question about the tooth color. He is the expert. It could be an infection, an injusr, a sign of many things. It might be nothing. Just call and ask.
