Dilemma About Finding Safe Bottles for Breastmilk Feeding That Don't Leak

My son receives expressed breast milk with medela bottles at daycare. The staff tells me they repeatedly leak around the collar and the nipple, as much as an ounce at a feeding. I called medela and they suggested not overtightening the collar of the bottle. In practicality, this solution only works some of the time. These bottles seem to leak. Can anyone suggest a bottle that does not leak and is safe? BPA and phtalate free? I'm not sure what to buy to or what to do. Expressed breast milk is like gold and even an ounce leaking per day is too much. Thanks so much for your input.

I remember having the same problem if I used any collar other than what came with the bottle. This does not happen for me if I am using Medela bottles with the collar they come with, regardless of the nipple.

My friend has twins and she uses Born Free and they are great--I can give first hand testimony to that. They just require cleaning a few extra parts, so I don't know whether the daycare would be responsible for that and give you a hard time--they would also probably lose the parts. I would imagine you would fill the bottles and screw on a lid, with the nipples prepared and ready to screw on when the time came to use the bottle. They don't leak, and they get less air so less gas.

The best choice if you don't want any chemicals leaching into the milk is to use glass bottles. They do still make them, just look it up on google. And if you use plastic don't ever microwave the bottles!

Hi Elize
I use Mother's Milk Mate bottles - you can get them online - I got them from my lactation consultant at Full Circle Family Care in White Plains. They don't have cuffs and nipples though - so I bought Medela. They don't tell me anything about leaking at my son's daycare. Maybe it fits the bottles better ? I know people who swear by Dr. Brown's and they have BPA free bottles with their own nipples and tops. Good luck!

I just got an email from Amazon that has several brands of BPA/DEHA free bottles. Here is the link http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=pe_14990_###-##...
You can probably find most of these at a local store instead of having to wait for shipping, and pay extra. I know Walmart and Target sell Nuby brand products.

We really like the Born Free bottles - I also had problems with the Medela leaking, but I've never had that problem with the Born Free. A great site for finding stuff like this:

www.thesofterlanding.com

We also got some natural pacifiers from this site and I just bought a bunch of feeding utensils.

Good luck!

Have you tried glass bottles? They are probably easier to find now because of all the information out about unsafe plastics. I haven't used bottles myself so I really don't have anything else to offer.

I sometimes have the same problem with the Medela bottles...I've tried the Avent and it hasn't leaked. But I HATE having to pump into the Medela containers and transferring. Makes for more dishes!!

Would love to find a good option that fits the Medela pump/valves....please share if you find one!!

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

UPDATE: I found something useful tht I wanted to share - Avent makes a conversion kit so you can use a Medela pump (and others, I think) directly using Avent containers. It costs about $10 and can be found online at a few retailers (I purchased it from drugstore.com yesterday for $8.50).

Aside from the bottles leaking, I was haing issues with latching and flow with the Medela nipples, so I decided to try out the Avent newborn nipples, which are supposed to have a slow flow similar to the breast (I also purchased these yesterday, along with some more of their bottles to try out with my conversion kit). In using the Avent bottle and stage 1 nipple hat I have, I've found that my LO gets a lot less air with her milk, and there is less gas and spitting up (which thrills me, b/c I don't have to see all my "liquid gold" all over her and me!!

Definitely post and let us know what you end up doing!

Hi E., I use Playtex nursers they are the natural or wide latch bottles with disposable liners. They were one of the recommended brands by my lactation consultant for emulating the breast as far as size and I also read in an article that they are BPA free. They do not leak at all and have been great for me. Hope that helps.

Hey there,
I've used Born Free for my daughter the entire time. She's 17 months now. They were one of the first on the market to be BPA free. www.bornfree.com. I think now you can find a line from Sassy as well, and I'm sure some of the other mainstream ones. But, I like Born Free because they never leaked, and now that we've switched to the sippy cup, the same top fits on the same bottle either size (small or large)! So, I didn't have to go out and buy all new bottles, just the soft and then the hard spout. Really big cost savings. You can find born free in buy buy baby now. But, I just bought from the website. There is a new brand called www.greentogrow.com. Some of my friends are using them. I don't know much about them, but they sure look cute! :)

We had the same problem with Avent bottles. We switched to Playtex Drop Ins. I pumped into the madela bottles and then poured it into the to PLaytex Drop-Ins. They are wonderful. You throw out the liner when you are done and it cuts down on cleaning time. They are safe too. We checked this out first since this was a concern of ours. They are definately worth getting. Hope this helps.

I've read a lot about Born Free bottles. They are a bit expensive, but worth the health and safety for your child. I never used them. I am also a big fan of Dr. Brown's bottles. However, I am not sure how they fare with toxic chemicals. They do not leak.

Hi E.,
I'm sorry I don't have any advice, but when I saw your question, I just couldn't resist sharing my story with you. My best friend and I refer to pumped breastmilk as "liquid gold," so I understand the frustration of losing any of it.
About 10 minutes ago, I went into the kitchen to prepare my son's bottles for tomorrow. I had a frozen bag of milk defrosting in a bowl of water. It seemed to be all liquid, so I started pouring it into bottles. Little did I know, there was still a chunk of ice in there. It slipped out of the bag, missed the bottle and splattered on the floor! Well I could not believe the profanity coming from my mouth!! It's such a shame to lose any of it - but good for you, sticking with breastfeeding and taking the time to pump so that your son also has it when you aren't there!
I hope you get a chuckle out of my misfortune. :) I have to go scrub breastmilk off my kitchen cabinets now! Best of luck finding new bottles!

I've had the same problem with the Medela bottles. We use Green 2 Grow bottles that are BPA free, although you might have to experiment with the nipples because even the smallest holes were too big for my baby for a while. The Gerber Nuk nipples work pretty well with these bottles. I've also have several friends who are happy with the Playtex bottles with disposable inserts and the Born Free bottles.

Born Free makes safe plastic bottles. Evenflo makes glass bottles. I have not had any problems with either leaking a lot, but all bottles have their pros and cons. The glass Evenflos I bought from Babies R Us. The Born Frees I bought on their website.

You are right: breast milk is like gold and every drop is precious.

Hi, E.,

I pump using a Medela pump and the Medela bottles that came with it. When it's time to feed, though, I transfer the expressed milk into bottles by Gerber - I can't remember which kind but they're BPA free and they don't leak, especially when you use them with Gerber rings and nipples. I, too, have found that the Medela bottles leak. Hope this helps!

I'm surprised to hear that the Medela bottles are leaking as I used them for my twin girls for many months and they did not leak. When they started drinking more than 4 ounces I switched to Evenflo glass bottles. They're heavy when they're full but I felt much safer using glass than anything else. Best of luck!

I pumped for five months straight. I used Avent bottles. There is actually an attachment that fits onto the madella pump. So I would pump right into the avent bottles using the attachment. Every once in a while I would have an issue with the bottle leaking, but a simple adjustment of the niple (taking it out and putting it back in) would be enough to fix it.

I'm so suprised to hear something negative about Medela. We used the medela bottles (pump and other products too) and LOVED them. They went through the dishwasher numerous times and I nursed/pumped until my daughter was 14 months old, so it was over a year of use. They are now packed away awaiting our next baby. My point is that maybe you unfortunately got a bad batch.

HI E.,

I posted a very similar question a while back - my husband was trying to feed my 2 month old daughter from the medela and it constantly leaked- I have switched to the Sassy brand MAM bottle. It has been GREAT! It is BPA and Phthalate free and much more affordable than the Born Free bottles (however, that would be another option for you as well) The MAM bottles have not leaked for me at all and both babysitters I use have had great success in feeding her with them.

I hope this helps you - good luck - let me know what happens, I'd love to hear! (PS - check out this site to see reviews)
