Difficulty Urinating

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and have a tilted uterus. In the last day or so, I've been having the hardest time urinating, especially when my bladder seems really full (you know, every hour or so!). I HAVE to go, but it's like a little valve is not opening up, so I sit there and sit there in agony. I lean forward and backward and press my hands on my belly, hoping to move my uterus around (I figure it's pressing on my bladder or urethra or something). Eventually I'm able to squeeze a little bit out at a time, but it takes 15 minutes or more, and then I feel like I haven't even gotten it all out. (It does not burn or hurt coming out; it's just the pressure of having to go and not being able to that gives me the agony.)

All the books say that I just need to wait for relief until my uterus rises more in my abdomen, but in the meantime, what do I do? Any tricks to voiding my bladder more expeditiously? And how long might I expect this new symptom to last?

Thanks, fellow mothers!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called the doctor. He said that it will only last a week or two. If I really can't go, I'll need to go immediately to the ER to have a catheter put in. So I'm really hoping THAT doesn't happen!! Plus, just thinking about the logistics of going to the ER makes it seem even more unpleasant--I usually can't pee in the middle of the night, so then I'd have to drive myself to the hospital because my husband would need to stay home with our sleeping 19 month old! So all the way there I'd be hoping to pee my pants to avoid the catheter? Oh boy. Thanks, though, to you who responded, especially Jasmine with her "technique," which I definitely will try next time!!

With a UTI it doesn't always burn or hurt coming out. You might want to have that checked just in case it might bring relief.

(Your description sounds very much like how I remember a UTI felt when I was pregnant with my oldest, but that was YIKES! twenty-two years ago now, so I'm not sure of the memory.)

While I have not experienced this, my good friend had the same problem with a tipped uterus; it made things quite a bit complicated when she had a full bladder....She ended up having her uterus moved off of it (several times) by the doctor. You might want give your doctor a call.

Hi S. :)

This might sound a little crazy but I also had a hard time urinating while pregnant and this is the only thing that worked. I discovered this technique one desperate night when I had spent about 20 minutes trying to pee ;) Hopefully this isn't TMI but here goes! With my feet on the floor, spread a bit wider than usual for balance, I lifted my tushy off the toilet seat...kinda like how you squat over the toilet in a public restroom if there's nothing to cover the seat with. Then I would put my hands on my thighs for additional support/balance and tip my torso toward the floor (so head gets closer to the floor and your tushy raises more into the air). It was sort of like the downward dog position in yoga, accept your hands are on your thighs or knees instead of the floor...and you are straddeling a toilet instead of a nice yoga mat ;) I could only pee by assuming this position! I think it must have tilted something into the correct position which allowed the urine to flow more freely. Like I said, it sounds crazy but it worked for me. So if you are feeling desperate one day (and I'm sure you are..I remember how awful it felt!!) give this a shot. I really hope this helps and you find some relief :) Good luck!
